Product Description
Something to Hold, a book about guardian angels and their ability to help anyone, even the most isolated people. Each one of us is attached to an angel who guides us and protects us from birth to death. These guardian angels, present in most cultures since the Greeks and Romans, are our daily companions. Once we communicate with them, their light energy may help us. The images of this very unique book show different representations of angels, and inspired the reflective text written by Sharon Stone: They encompass the feeling that I have when I meet others who are looking for some kind of solace, she says. A book to revel in, over and over, as much for its message as for its emotionally charged beauty. Completing this testimony, is a guide in which readers can identify the angel associated with their dates of birth. ... Read more

Women like her because she's intelligent and has a great sense of style. Men like her because she's gorgeous, sexy, and smart. Sharon Stone is currently at the top of her game with a new husband, rumors of Oscar nominations for her role in The Mighty, and two new films in production. Journalist Tom Kummer gives the inside story of the woman known to be as stubborn in standing up for her beliefs as she is dedicated, hardworking, and generous. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Short but beautiful
I have the French version of the book, but I thought it was touching, even if too short. The author seems to have a boundless admiration for Sharon, that he tries to conceal by often trying to convince us he doesn't fallinto the star traps. I must add the pictures are simply beautiful; farfrom being a spring of information, this book is a piece of art, that youwill like to keep on a shelf. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterful
Offers masterful insights into a complex character. Deeply researched, beautifully written, a powerful and ultimately heartbreaking look at the nexus between Hollywood, power, and sex. Buy this book, study it, learn from it! (How's that, Frank? Can you get the check in the mail by Tuesday?)

I was interesed in reading more aboutMs. Stone due to an incredible interview I saw her give on cable (I believeit was Inside The Actors Studio on Bravo). She literally had the audiencespell-bound.She was articulate, compassionate and a class-act.Nothinglike she is portrayed in this book.It is poorly written, poorly editedand the authors name-dropping is so pathetic you almost feel sorry forhim.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read
Sydney Sanders is an award winning writer and has two failed marriages. She has always considered herself to be straight. L C Hackett is a Grammy winning rock star and her career has come to a halt.
The pair meet up at a party and sparks fly between them. The questions are, will Sydney be able to love another woman? Will L C be able to make a commitment to Sydney?
The path will be rocky and there will be outside influences trying to sabotage their fragile blossoming relationship.
I enjoyed this book. It shows that people as different as chalk and cheese can not only be attracted to one another, but can actually be good for one another.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a Classic, but Still Good
Novelist Sydney Sanders is invited to a party by one of her fans.Little does she know the love of her life, a woman no less, is waiting there for her. That woman is L.C. Hackett, a rock star who hasn't won a grammy in several years and is trying to get back on top. This reader enjoyed the story, but won't spend the time to read it again. The romance was great and most of us would love to have a relationship like theirs, but nothing really happened in the book.Sure, there were angst and issues surrounding making two lives one, but the story was bland and unexciting. It almost seemed like a "day in the life" of these two women instead of an exciting new relationship.

Recommended for when you're in a melancholy mood and don't have anything better to do... accompanied with a cold beer and a bag of chips. This one only takes a few hours from start to finish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best love story I've read
This was definitely the best love story I've ever read.It was so real it makes me wonder if this Sharon Stone didn't have a fling with kd lang and wrote one of those thinly-veiled fiction based on fact stories.Sydney's reason for falling for this flawed character is clearly stated in several places throughout the book. She's simply helping another woman evolve emotionally and break through some barriers from her past. She can do this because she already has accomplished this before the two met and realizes how important it is to take care of regrets while you have the chance. One thing I noticed was how these two opposites eventually fit so well together, like yin and yang.Their differences were what drew them to each other, but as they get to know each other, they find those differences are also similarities: like when they're talking about how men have treated them L.C. says "men are mean to me because they don't like my body... they're mean to you because they do."And this was a great behind the scenes look at a rock star's life.It was like being a fly on the wall.It was part National Inquirer and part great literature... something for everyone.A great read!

3-0 out of 5 stars Very average
I found this book to be very average. The character who played the rock star did not come off as a very sympathetic or likable person. I also could not figure out why her new girlfriend (a successful writer) loved her so much.Overall I found this story not very compelling. The loves scenes were not even good. ... Read more

"A collection of poems that give rich drama to ordinary experience, deepening our sense of what it means to be human."—Pulitzer Prize finalist citation

"There is a broad, powerful streak of independence—even disobedience—that runs through Stone's writing and has inspired a great number of women after her."—Guardian

Finalist for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize, this retrospective of Ruth Stone's poetry combines the best work from twelve previous volumes with an abundance of new poems. This comprehensive selection includes early formal lyrics, fierce political poems, and meditations on her husband's suicide and her own blindness. As Sharon Olds says in her foreword, "A Ruth Stone poem feels alive in the hands—ardent, independent, restless." What Love Comes To is a necessary collection from an American original.

Can it be that
memory is useless,
like a torn web
hanging in the wind?
Sometimes it billows
out, a full high gauze—

like a canopy.
But the air passes
through the rents
and it falls again and flaps
shapeless
like the ghost rag that it is—
hanging at the window
of an empty room.

Ruth Stone is the author of twelve books of poetry. Among her many awards are the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Eric Mathieu King Award, a Whiting Award, and she was a finalist for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize. She taught creative writing at many universities, finally settling at SUNY Binghamton. She lives in Vermont.

5-0 out of 5 stars Writing Like Herself, to Invent the Universe
Ruth Stone's "What Love Comes To" is a fine book: new Poems (2008) and selected poems from 1959-2004. Her long career of writing poems seems short though when compared with her age (she was born in Virginia in 1915). She lives in Vermont, and her sense of place is crucial to these poems. Kansas, Virginia, Vermont, New York, California, Indiana. Wherever she's been, she's observed her surroundings well, as a naturalist, noting lilacs, trillium, iris, milkweed, and lifting leaves. She writes of woods, mountains, and "bare fields after the snow is gone."Kansas becomes Africa when "The rolled hay is like hippopotami."

"I started out in the Virginia mountains
with my grandma's pansy bed
and my Aunt Maud's dandelion wine."

She's noticed creatures of ground, water, and air - crows, caterpillars, wasps, bears, hummingbirds, bumblebees, flycatchers, warblers, worms, cats, cockroaches, blind baby mice, the hum of spiders, the husk of a locust, redwing blackbirds, globe fish, nightjars, lions, and phantom zebras. Often her poems seem more like conversational meditations than poetry, as if we're peering into the journal of a life, where words flow as if effortlessly.

"One morning you wake up in a trailer
on the Moline River.
Never mind how you got here."

Sharing her reward for an observed life, she reflects contemplatively.

"I read that the left side
reveals the true self.
My true self has been
stitched to another face.
Not even my words fit.
I listen to what the
mouth is saying,
but I write in a small
notebook -
where is the body of
this person?"

And she stays throughout this book remarkably hopeful.

"Memory becomes the exercise against loss."

I also recommend Virginia poet Dabney Stuart's new book of poems: Tables and Fred Chappell's Midquest: A Poem.

Reading Ruth Stone's poetry is falling through Alice's magic hole and coming out into a world that's been refreshed, redesigned and realigned. The natural world will never look the same to you after Ruth Stone's poetry because you've seen the world through the eyes of a wolverine and the universe from an exploding star.Love in all its crackling flashing surfaces will surprise you again in ways you thought had been lost forever.Ruth Stone's poetry validates string theory:we're all here, there and someplace else at the same time.Buy this book, fall into it, let it envelop you. In the end, part of you returns from a parallel universe, but part of you stays there forever because Ruth Stone's poetry gives you a clarity of vision you never knew you needed and so many blurry, sepia shapes previously familiar and common are suddenly in focus and startle you with true color. In her poem "Memory" Ruth Stone asks, "Can it be that / memory is useless, / like a torn web / hanging in the wind?..." That poems continues on its own path, but this reviewer swerves away, simply saying -- WHAT LOVE COMES TOdevours memory as fodder for a galaxy of poems, each one a portal to another world. 5-0 out of 5 stars Superb. Future prize winning book!
Hi. This is my first review. I think this book is worth every penny and it will win a big prize in '08 like the national Book Award or Pulitzer. If not, Fire to Fire by Mark Doty (also his collected works will win!) What I love about this book, is that it reveals the gowth of the poet over time, as any collected works should, but it also shows how elegant, simple but poetic, and wonderful her language has been all along. She is an overlooked poet in my opinion even thow she has won a few of the prizes and Hunger Mountain (a literary journal) named a prize after her! If you are already the head writer on a daytime drama, can you say your life is just like a soap opera? That's the question facing Bailey Connors, who is saddled with the 22-year-old daughter of a network executive and driven close to madness by a friend's attempt at matchmaking. To top it off, she has been ordered to kill off the soap's leading lady on a special live episode, which will either be a disaster or the triumph of her career. But either way, love may be waiting on the other side in a very unexpected manner. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Boldly hilarious
If you've ever wanted to get an insider's look of a soap opera and be captivated by a lesbian romance, then look no further than ALL THE BOLD DAYS OF MY RESTLESS LIFE, the laugh-out loud novel that takes place on a daytime drama. Author Sharon Stone concocts a wild ride with main character Bailey Connors, the head writer on the soap billed with the same name as the book.

Though it seems like a dream to work on a wildly popular show, Bailey doesn't have it easy. She not only has to cater to the stuffy suits of the network executives, but she also has to wrestle with the demands of the spoiled, egotistical actors who don't always agree with the scripts they've been given. It's enough to make a girl pull her hair out. And Bailey's not trying to hear it right now, especially after being dumped by her longtime girlfriend.

Never fear, her trusty assistant Peter is there to save the day. Her flamboyant friend has a few prospects up his sleeve to help butch-looking Bailey to get back on the horse. But the women he sets her up with are horrible, to say the least.

And if Bailey's life could get any worse, she is stuck with one of the dumbest writers to ever live and has to rewrite months of scripts to kill off one of her favorite characters on the show. Talk about drama!!

Stone's All the Bold Days novel is hilarious not to mention outrageous. It has a quirky sense of humor that reads sharply and very quickly. She creates a great peek into the world of daytime TV, giving tidbits into the soaps. The ending wraps up well, as you root for Bailey to land on her feet.

Pick this one up if you need a good laugh.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
I enjoyed this book very much and will keep it in my collection to read again some day. Buy it...you'll like it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Zany to say the least
If there was ever a book that fit the definition of zany, this one is it.Very few things make me laugh out loud, but I found myself in hysterics at the closing scenes.I'm not a fan of soap operas, but I do appreciate their spoofs.Bailey is the head writer for a show called All the Bold Days of My Restless Life.Every horrible cliche that applies to this type of show is attached to this one. What can you say about a show that has a main character named Aruba, her mother is Myrtle Beach and her stepsister is Bermuda Schwartz?Bailey's private life could be a feature story on her soap. After her girlfriend dumps her, her friend Peter arranges the three blind dates from hell. The first is with a woman who has a midnight online sex show and likes to use her dates as her "special guests."The second regales Bailey with details about why she has six children and how that has convinced her to start dating women. The last is a cop who gets drunk and starts shooting rats as they walk down the street, causing an encounter with some of New York City's finest. And then there is the fact that the two major stars of the show spend all of their time trying to do each other in professionally.Yes, it's light reading, not great literature, but sometimes it's just fun to read that.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you love satire, this one's for you...
I'm not a big fan of satire, so did not thoroughly enjoy the humorous side of this book. However, I was completely drawn into the underlying story.Bailey, the head writer for a daily soap opera with the same name as the book, seems to have a black cloud over her head. Her long-time girlfriend dumps her, her sarcastic response to a script change earns her a trip to the "Big Guy's" office, she is stuck mentoring a useless new writer who is related to a studio bigwig and ends up wreaking havoc, and she has to write off her favorite character.Of course, she has friends like Peter who want to help, but they only make things worse. While going through all of this, Bailey doesn't even realize she's falling in love with someone at work until it hits her square in the face.

I found this book to be similar in structure / intent as 'Castaway' by Advocate. The story was great, the characters were fun, but the comedy was a little over-done.This book is a great lazy-day read, but it won't be a permanent addition to my bookshelf.Enjoy it and pass it on.

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as Soapdish and Tootsie!
In this soap opera spoof, the actors are as screwy as the people they play on the show. This book sucks you into their weird world and you won't want to leave!I loved the funny names of the soap characters, I loved all the personalities, I loved the way they interacted, and I loved the surprise ending. And I can only hope that with the way this book ended that there's a sequel in the works.I want more of these wonderful characters! ... This is a CD of straight Aesop's fables followed by the narrator trying to turn the moral into common language. Aesop's read better than they listen - at least for me. 3-0 out of 5 stars Bad Movies-Know Them,Love Them
"Bad Movies We Love" is a great how-to guide in finding cheesy/hammy movies. Authors Edward Margulies&Stephen Rebello classify them in different categories. "Slay it with music" deals with Hollywood's worst musicals. "Bad Movies A Go-Go" is a treasure trove of psychedelic cheesefests. "No,but I saw the book" shows that not every movie based on a novel is automatically good. "Slip us a Mickey" is devoted to Mickey Rourke while "The Stone Age" is dedicated to Sharon Stone.

"Bad Movies We Love" isn't deep reading. It even takes on "Valley of the Dolls","Fatal Attraction" and "Butterfield 8",the soap opera movie that earned Liz Taylor an Oscar. It's fun reading, and a how-to guide in finding bad movies that are fun watching.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great subject -- bad execution
Being a fan of movies, both good and bad, when I saw this book at my local library I thought it'd be a fun read. I was wrong. Bad Movies We Love is an idea that's ripe with potential, but this book never lives up to it. It's very dated, which isn't an unforgivable sin seeing as how it was published in 1993, but content is very poor. Most of the book is spent on trashy dramas, romances and big-screen soap operas. The book almost entirely ignores sci-fi and horror movies (home of the greatest bad movies ever made), while devoting entire chapters to Sharon Stone and Troy Donahue. A lot of the themes that they divide the chapters into are negligible, and half of the movies listed could have fit in virtually anywhere.

The chapters themselves are arranged with the films in alphabetical order, frequently creating a situation where the authors refer to a movie that they haven't even discussed yet. And the writing itself is just dull -- they make the same tepid commentary time and again, over and over. Really, how many times can you read the same joke about a film killing off someone's career? And for that matter, how many times can the same actor kill off his career?

This is a bad book, but not a bad book I love.

3-0 out of 5 stars It Couldn't Have Been That Bad!
Written by a couple of L.A. guys for Movieline magazine:Stephen Rebello has authored two previous books.Ed. Margulies was Executive Editor of the national film magazine in 1993.The movie stills on the cover and in the photo section are great, seeing the stars when they were young and in their prime.

Some of the movies I did like:Marjorie Morningstar, Grease, Half Moon Street, Vertigo, Jonathan Livingston Seagull, The Jazz Singer (Neil Diamond), and Ash Wednesday (?).I agree that Play Misty For Me was bad.It left a bad taste in my mouth.

Buy Nick Clooney's THE MOVIES THAT CHANGED US for a really good book about some of these same films.

5-0 out of 5 stars MIND BENDING [...]!
Anyone who's willing to write about Shelley Winters' HUGE bloomers in the underwater sequence of the Poseiden Adventure gets a snap from me!

UPDATE: Why oh why can't they update and reprint this for us? Mine's old and yellow and the pages are falling out from so much use. Last night we had it handy during our viewing of MOHAGANY, a movie that was everything I hoped it wouldn't be!

Would love their "take" on SHOWGIRLS which may very well knock VALLEY OF THE DOLLS down a notch but not MOMMIE DEAREST.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious
This book is an absolute riot. The authors takes on these movies are great. What makes the book better than the standard bad movie review is how they trash movies you think might be good (like Fatal Attraction). My only complaint is there are sections with too many references to old (50's) movies that I have never heard of. Otherwise it is hilarious. ... Read more

"Mind like a laser beam...
The fact that you have picked up this book means that you are a special person. What I mean by that is that you want more, you need more, because you are more. Most people think that they are happy living a mediocre life. They are not desirous of much and do not appear to be built for bigger things. They are satisfied with reading the newspaper, watching sports events, hobbies and family. You, on the other hand, are different. You like a little more adventure than your peers - though you may not consider the people in your life peers at all - rather, people you deal with in order to live here on planet earth. If this passage is describing you then this book might just punch your ticket" (Stone, 2009). "Truly, truly, I say to you, He who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do (King James Bible, John 14:12). ... Read more
