Product Description
A lavishly illustrated personal tour of the great star's homes and collections.

For nearly five decades Barbra Streisand has been one of the singular figures in American entertainment. From the cabaret to the Broadway stage, from television and film stardom to her acclaimed work as a director, from the recording studio to the concert hall, she has demonstrated that the extraordinary voice that launched her career was only one of her remarkable gifts.

Now, in her first book, Barbra Streisand reveals another aspect of her talent: the taste and style that have inspired her beautiful homes and collections. My Passion for Design focuses on the architecture and construction of her newest homes, the dream refuge that she has longed for since the days when she shared a small Brooklyn apartment with her mother, brother, and grandparents. A culmination and reflection of Streisand's love of American architecture and design between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries, the book contains many of her own photographs of the rooms she has decorated, the furniture and art she has collected, and the ravishing gardens she has planted on her land on the California coast. In addition to glimpses of her homes, Barbra shares memories of her childhood, the development of her sense of style, and what collecting has come to mean to her. My Passion for Design is a rare and intimate private tour into the world of one of our most beloved stars. It will be welcomed by her many fans and all lovers of the great achievements of American design. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sing along with Babs
As a fan of Barbra, and a voice student, this songbook is great fun. The music doesn't always match her recordings exactly, but it is mostly accurate.Of course, it's possible Babs recorded the same song a little differently on different albums.I didn't take the time to compare all versions of all songs.

It provides guitar and piano accompaniment, and gives a great opportunity to stretch one's vocal cords. ... Read more

Product Description

Controversial, a global icon, a diva among divas---Barbra Streisand, the last genuinely unique show business personality of the twentieth century is the most honored entertainer in the world today. But along with the Tony, two Oscars, six Emmys, eight Grammys, ten Golden Globes, fifty gold albums, and wild acclaim have come wildly diverse reactions to a personality as outsized as her talent. In the words of Streisand herself, “I'm a liberal, opinionated Jewish feminist---I push a lot of buttons.”
In Tom Santopietro’s witty yet analytical look at this one-of-a-kind career, the myths and personal foibles are stripped away, and the focus lands squarely on the work. From the early recordings to the groundbreaking television specials, from the Hollywood blockbusters to the history-making comeback concerts, Streisand’s career is placed within an oftentimes uniquely American social context but always allowed to speak for itself. In a brisk, funny, and always compelling style, The Importance of Being Barbra reveals all the milestones in a new and sometimes startling light, ranging from the brilliance of Funny Girl and The Broadway Album to the misbegotten yet curiously popular A Star Is Born.
Treating Barbra Streisand like the serious artist she is---and has always claimed to be---The Importance of Being Barbra delves into the key reasons for her all-encompassing success: the overwhelming ambition, the notorious perfectionism, the fervent gay following, the dramatic pull of a voice and style that mysteriously connect with the lovelorn all around the world. A full-scale examination of the acting, singing, and directing that have ranged from the dazzling to the occasionally inexplicable---it’s all here for anyone who has ever wondered at the phenomenon that is Barbra Streisand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for fans only!
I read this over the weekend and couldn't have been more pleased. Although the author repeats certain themes too often, its in service of his critical analysis which is to show how aspects of her personality and emotional baggage played out in the different media that she worked in. Because I am a fan of her music more than her movies, I am more familiar with the former and agree with him in most cases. But the movie section I found interesting because it really drives the point home about how being a movie star was her central goal in life, a fact that may be obscured by her sucess as a recording artist. Because I don't think she's a very actress or director, I disagreed with the author that she did not receive her due from critics, the Oscars, etc. That whole section seemed to be about making the case that she was a significant movie actress filmaker. She may have been big B.O. because people liked her singing, etc., but that does not a great actress make. And he does make the point that the subject matter of her films was her working out the same psychological issues over and over, yet doesn't go one step further and admit that this plus her increasing desire to do it all--produce, act, direct--may have been to blame, and that the control-freak aspect of her personality which may have worked in a recording studio or a star-vehicle like Funny Girl, would not fly in a movie that required submergence of ego. That said, a very interesting book, especially if you haven't read a lot on her and don't desire to. Certainly the record recommendations--are very reliable. btw, if you don't want to spring for the 4-cd Just For the Record compilation (or whatever its called) I recommend the one-CD Highlights from Just For The Record.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Importance of Being Barbra
After being a Barbra fan for over 30 years I didn't know what this book could teach me or what new things could I learn. But I couldn't resist the title and was happy to find a refreshing look at Streisand's career in a way I had never seen.It is more of an essay of her work that I found to be very interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT analysis!
This is a non-gossip analysis of Barbra's career in it's various facets. You may disagree with some of the author's opinions (as I did with his evaluation of "What About Today," but you'll appreciate how this book examine's her work in social and psychological contexts. The perfect companion for Barry Dennen's book, "My Life With Barbra: A Love Story," a highly personal observation of her early life and career.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Fan's Uneven Attempt to Critique Streisand's Work
The idea is good--critique every piece of work Streisand has ever done. But because the author is too much of a fan, going overboard in praising the subject, the result is uneven and ultimately unsuccessful.

The author tries to review everything Barbra has done and quickly jumps through Streisand's career by genre. The music chapter rushes by so fast that some albums only get a couple paragraphs. The movie chapter spends a little more time on each film but if readers aren't familiar with the film they will come away confused by what the author is talking about. There are also sections on concerts, TV, and politics. At no point is any background information given nor are there any inside stories. So, for example, even though the song "Evergreen" appears in a couple of the chapters, he never mentions the reported conflict over the writing credits for the song or the tension between Streisand and her credited "co-writer."Instead the author just praises the song. So what's missing is history and context.

The television chapter is incredibly incomplete. He doesn't even mention the famous Mike Douglas series, where Streisand co-hosted for one week, and skips Ed Sullivan as well!Instead he focuses on an obscure, short-lived TV show called "PM East" that Mike Wallace hosted and then Wallace's "60 Minutes" interview 30 years later. And the TV chapter doesn't even mention Babara Walters, with whom Streisand sat for four interviews over the decades!

Most helpful is the scorecard at the end of the book that goes through every piece of work and assigns them grades. The author is fair and right-on in calling out some mediocre work.

There are also plenty of footnotes in the back to add to the book credibility. But there is not a lot of information in this book and almost nothing new for readers familiar with Streisand. It's basically one long college term paper that gives an overview of everything Streisand has done--and term papers aren't all that interesting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Barbra
Definitely not a book you can't put down. It is a polite and seemingly accurate description of Barbra's music recordings, films and television appearances. Author is very kind and considerate in writing of Barbra. Not a lot of personal accounts of Ms. Streisand as you might like to know but a good account of her career. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous expose on the diva...
Nutty, baffling, sometimes hilariously over-the-top collection of stories on Barbra Streisand's infamous impatience, impertenance, uber perfection and all-around bad temper. Author Shaun Considine, having been present on the sets of Barbra's movies "Up The Sandbox" and "A Star Is Born"--which seems to be the closest he ever got to her--writes about the star as if he knows her first-hand. Many of his gossipy tidbits are suspect, others merely juvenile and/or taken out of context. When the star complains, "No one really cares", she's saying this on the set of a movie, on-location in sweltering Arizona, trying to get an indifferent director to see her vision and contend with a stadium full of screaming fans. Considine never considers the dynamic results of Streisand's hard work, only on how she cracked under the pressure to get it right. ... Read more

This beautiful glossy book is a real bargain at the price that Amazon is selling. Even if you do not play the piano or guitar, you can sing along with Barbra when you play the cd. 4-0 out of 5 stars A gem for a fan
For a die-hard Barbra Streisand`s fan it`s a really useful guide. If you come to New York for a vacation and want to track Barbra`s steps just for fun - it`s a must. I think that even New Yorkers can find in it some interesting places to visit.
Well, this gem definitely is not from the exquisite jewellery shop; it`s rather a homemade trinket of sentimental value. The quality of photographs should be far ( and I mean FAR) better, that`s for sure. The commentaries sometimes are chaotic. The whole book has this amateurish flare - attractive for a fan, but, I guess, hardly acceptable for a regular reader.
So if you are a Barbra fan - get it and start your Barbra - New York adventure. If you are not - visit New York with other guides in your hand.

What a treat !
An awful lot of research has gone into this book, and very well laid out too.
I cannot wait to explore New York City with this book and see the places for myself.
I am sure Barbra would be proud !!

1-0 out of 5 stars Huh?

Known for a unquenchableappetite for gobbling up anything in print regarding Barbra, I ordered this book the very second I heard about it, and let me assure everyone- from the biggest fan to the mildly curious- that this is THE most interesting, totally absorbing, detailed account of Barbra's life in New York yet- literally an account from womb to tomb. Like myself, you will find yourself pulling on your walking shoes, grabbing a subway map and heading out onto the streets to have a look at every landmark that author Bernie Ardia has so painsakingly accounted for in photos and text. Mr.Ardia hints that there is more in this serier of chronicling early celebrity lives- I cannot wait to see who will be next on his own personal"This is Your Life" show.... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Although out of date now, a must for Barbra-philes
Even though Karen Swenson attempted a sequel, and James Spada himself followed this up with a terrific rewrite/second chapter, this mid-'70's career overview of Barbra Streisand is simply smashing. Charting her movie career up to "For Pete's Sake" and her music career up to "Barbra Streisand...and Other Musical Instruments", Spada's passion for every-detail-Barbra is apparent and his writing is straight-forward, amusing, informative and candid. Each Streisand album and movie is annotated with reviews, record sleeve and poster artwork, and background information in Spada's summary. I still learn a lot from this book, especially the story behind the "Barbra Joan" photo-jacket session(annoyed on the front, smiling on the back). Spada doesn't reveal the secrets behind Streisand's Quadraphonic recordings(some which differ slightly), nor does he include every Streisand 45 single or mention the differences between those and the album versions, but still, this is quite a job!! Filled with incredible b&w photographs and behind-the-scenes stuff, any Streisand fan will cherish it. ... Read more

Product Description
This is a moving, fascinating, intimate portrait of Streisand, the three years she shared with Dennen, and the on-again, off-again relationship he has had with her for 30 years. When they met, Dennen explains, it was Streisand's dream to make it as a stage actress. But he helped her discover her real talent, singing. She came to him looking for friendship, and he introduced her to the fabulous history of night-club singing and cabaret. Through the richly textured performance education Streisand received from Dennen, the thrift shop threads their friend Terry Leong turned into stunning star outfits for her, and the tender touch of makeup artist Bob Schulenberg, Barbara became 'Barbra' and was empowered to eventually realise that dream of fame through finding a 'style' that set her apart from the rest.Drawn from Dennen's personal experiences with Streisand, his diaries and letters from that time, "My Life with Barbra" takes a close look at the early years of one of today's most powerful American entertainers. From her eye-popping first smash-hit as a brand-new Broadway Star in "I Can Get It For You Wholesale", to her starring role in "Funny Girl" Dennen offers you front row seats to the making of a megastar. A treasure-trove drawn from his scrapbooks, never-before published photographs, and letters makes this book of memories a unique and enduring collector's item. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating reading
Well written and easy to read. Finished it in two days. I really like the transcript of the telephone conversations Barry had with Barbra.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Slice Of Streisand's Life
There have been many Streisand biographies. She's accomplished so much in her life.Barry Dennen's sweet book MY LIFE WITH BARBRA is a slice of Streisand's life. It's also a snap shot of Mr. Dennen's life and contains many personal details about him.Dennen tells a good story and has an ear for dialogue.Of course, there is no way Dennen could remember the conversations he quotes verbatim - but I don't think he claims to.Rather, his book is a sort of "misty, water-colored" memory of the days in Manhattan with Barbra Streisand. He catches Streisand's cadences very well, though.

It's nice to hear about Streisand from someone who knew her personally.Everything I've always suspected was true - at least in her early career.Barbra was sweet and tough, ignorant and brilliant, self-absorbed and giving. She was very taken with her "look" and it's interesting to read about how she concentrated on her makeup and clothes so much.

The most fascinating part of the book is Dennen's recollections of some phone calls from the "adult" Barbra in 1992 and 1997.We see Barbra as we suspect she is:a little burdened with stardom; obsessed with the truth and trying to control how others tell it.

This book is great! At the end, I was most impressed that, despite the years that lapsed between Dennen and Streisand's love affair and friendship, Streisand still kept in touch.I suspect she is a loyal friend, despite her eccentricities.

5-0 out of 5 stars His Life With Barbra
I found this book to be very enjoyable.I have long been a Streisand fan and have read many of her biographies, but this one, I would have to say is one of the best.Dennen takes us thru Barbra's early years, when she was just starting out as an actress, and describes his part in pushing hertoward being the greatest singer of our times. This book is very sweet andI definately recomend it to any Barbra fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE DEFINITIVE BARBRA BOOK
My Life with Barbra is an absolute must for anyone interested. No other book written about her can boast of such an intimate perspective. Mr. Dennen was there from the very beginning, even before she attempted to singin public for the first time. If you're considering a Barbra book, makethis the one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most informative and entertaing book ever written!
Being a Barbra Streisand fan, I loved how the book gave you a glimpse into her past, from an insider, it felt like I was really there experiencing it all with her!The best book I've ever read is "My Life withBarbra" ... Read more

Product Description
An intimate, revisionist portrait of the legendary Barbra Streisand draws on hundreds of interviews with friends, colleagues, family members, and others to reveal her difficult childhood, rise to fame, tumultuous personal life, and obsession with perfection and control. 100,000 first printing. BOMC. Tour.Amazon.com Review
Fans of the singer/actress/director will devour all 600 pagesof this book, and even those less enamored will admit that it takes ahefty volume to do justice to the tangled psyche of a star aslegendary for her temperament as her talent. Anne Edwards, who hasinfused the celebrity bio with class in a dozen previous books, doesher usual thorough research and manages to combine plenty of juicyanecdotes with a thoughtful, generally favorable evaluation of thesuper-diva's career, from early fame in Funny Girl to labors oflove like Yentl. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Passive Writing, Aggressive Subject
First off, I love Barbra Streisand. She is an electrifying, complex, multi-talented woman with incredible drive and tremendous style. And, like many women, she is abrasive, needy, egomaniacal, picky, and prone to anxieties and self doubt. That's pretty much why I admire her--she's so much like me, except, of course, she can sing, act, make movies, write songs, and so on!

As much as I enjoyed reading this book, the first Streisand bio I've read, I found the writing itself rather lacking. Over and over the author explains and re-explains Streisand's need for motherly approval, her urge to become famous to prove wrong anyone who ever said she wasn't attractive enough for stardom. The author's passive writing style sometimes literally put me to sleep: "The star-lit night was warm." Oh, please!

So, while I did like finding out details about one of my favorite performers, I felt the text could have used a good editor's touch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Edwards' Failure
In order to be fair I read this book twice.I adore Babs--I live my life to be like hers;I want my resonance to sympathize with her resonance.I want people to spend time with me and to think that they have really beenin the company of Babs.Or at least AS IF they had been in her company--Iwant to leave a similar impression.I really really really do. Iapproached this book in much the same way.I wanted to think that thisbook was in Babs' library.Instead, if anything, Edwards' treatmentlocates this book not in her library but perhaps in her pantry--rightbetween that canned vegatable that the previous owners left behind and thecantalope pie tin.Edwards' doesn't get Babs' main rhetoricalmechanism--of putting the world on the defensive to protect her from herown defensiveness.Edward's BUYS INTO Babs' mechanisms rather than callingthem out.In a sense, Edwards argues for the grandeur of the Emperor's newclothes.I give it 5 stars because, as the other reviews attest, her fanswant to be duped.Hence, I celebrate 5-star stupidity.

5-0 out of 5 stars An innocent child?Or a flustered fool?
I read Edwards' rendition of Streisand on a full stomach--indeed, had I eaten one more bite, I would have choked in a way that would have repulsedthe most sea-tested sailor.Perhaps it was this context--a context at oncefull and barren--that allowed me to plunge into Streisand's persona withsuch plodding, cautious, phobic zeal. Would this book answer the mainquestion:is Babs a hapless victim; is she an innocent child; or is she animmature hapless brat whose very own defensiveness results entirely in hertireless attempts to put others on the defensive in her presence?Once youare certain the world revolves around you, to put others on the defensiveis your only resort when an unnamed discomfort disturbs your fragilepsyche--when for a passing moment the reality that you are not as great asyou think you are dares manifest itself; and you, with just slightlygreater impetus, dare not see it for what it is really is: a truth thatthreatens the (necessary) house of cards that you --and your adoringlemmings--call reality.Edwards' treatment here sidesteps these questionsby becoming a literary lemming. Her introduction and her conclusion arelike two pies on a ledge of a house: screaming the warning "don't jumparound or the pies may tip over and fall!"Edwards is a fan. That iswhy this book is so excellent. She loves Babs.I do.You do. Babs does. Andre does. Our president does.Buy the book and share it with your OWNBabs.Cross the line.To make a connection. A Streisand Connection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic.
Barabra Streisand. She is one of the most fantastic ladies ever to walk this earth. This Biography is Fantastic. I love it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Filled with fun facts but the end falls short
After reading, Edwards book on the famous singer, I found that Edwards has definately done her homework. There were many interesting and fun facts and factlets about Barbra's life and, especially, the people in them. However, the last few chapters fall apart and I couldn't help but wonderwhat the big rush seemed to be in not paying as close attention to detailas Edwards had early on in Barbra's life.Clearly, she holds Streisand inhigh regard, since Edwards presents her life as if she is one of herbiggest fans. The book opens with the Las Vegas concerts and ends about 5years after, giving the reader no sense of closure.A flaw in writing thebiography of a person who's story isn't over yet. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Biography to Date
Though not perfect, this is Streisand's best biography for three reasons (1) it is well researched, (2) the author is not in awe of Streisand and avoids writing a tribute, and (3) it is interesting from beginning to end.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lengthy
My biggest complaint is that Mr. Riese steps into the shoes of Streisand more often than he should. The research is good, but only as good as the people he has interviewed (the majority of whom hold a grudge againstStreisand). There are statements in the book in which he actually tells usher thoughts, this is not only arrogant on his behalf, but unfair.I thinkhe takes too much creative license.Good attempt though. ...
