Mosquitos and black flies pose significant public health threats in many parts of the world and are a nuisance even in areas where they do not carry disease. In the search for environmentally safe pesticides, scientific attention has turned to strains of bacteria that are naturally toxic to these insects, but harmless to humans, other insects, animals, and microorganisms. The successful use of "Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis" to fight agricultural insect pests suggests that bacteria might also be effective against insect disease vectors. The contributors assess research on Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (B.t.i.) and Bacillus sphaericus and their effects on the larvae of mosquitoes and black flies. The discussion focuses on the nature and genetics of the bacteria's parasporal bodies, the cloning of their crystal endotoxins, and the attempts to transfer genes for the endotoxins to larval food sources. Commercial use of B.t.i. and B. sphaericus preparations to combat river blindness, Bancroftian filiariasis and other diseases of this type is assessed, and Sutherland concludes by addressing the questions of government regulation and public perception that will, as much as scientific findings, determine the practical use of these new methods of biological control.This book should be of interest to all medical and general entomologists and to those in relevant areas of microbiology. ... A great companion to Donald Sutherland's The Modern Scholar Series course.
I consider this my 'textbook' for the audio lecture series produced by The Modern Scholar.

Well researched and factual
Hadn't plan to review this title, but couldn't allow previous review to go without another opinion.While Sutherland does take the historiography of some French Revolution historians to task, he does so under the premise that "you can not ignore the facts."He does present facts, well-researched facts.He looks not only at Paris, but throughout France.

His presentation assumes the reader already knows the basic facts of the Revolution, which as a new student, was somewhat problematic to me.I remember reading several pages of explanation leading up to one of the Parisian journees, then Sutherland provided a sentence to summarize what actually happened.So I Googled the event and filled in the details for myself.In spite of this, I give Sutherland high grades for research, objectivity, and looking at the French nation as a whole.His analysis of events and attribution of their causes is very compelling.

biased, arguementative, poorly presented
Sutherland's work, The French Revolution and Empire needs no further inspection beyond its front cover.The book presents standard information about the revolution, nothing in too much detail, skimming over broad spanses of time in a few pages.He is obsessed with trashing the reputation of Francois Furet, another historical researcher.There are numerous passages where he disagrees with Furet's opinions, and instead of just saying "such and such is my opinion," it is a biting indictment of Furet's views.
There are better histories of the French Revolution than this.Histories that focus on the facts of revolution, not speculation and bias to put forth the author's views that he should be an authority on the French Revolution. ... Read more

Very Dry
This would definitely NOT be my first choice for reading about Revolutionary France or the Napoleonic Era. This book is very dry, although it does get the information out there, it's just not very interesting. This book was recommended for as a text for class on Revolutionary France. If you are interested in the French Revolution I would highly recommend Owen Connelly's "The French Revolution and Napoleonic Era." It is a fantastic read. ... Read more
