Excerpt:Dame Mildred Betty Ridley, DBE (September 10, 1909 - August 1, 2005) was a leading figure in the life of the Church of England from the 1960s into the 1980s, serving as Third Church Estates Commissioner from 1972 until 1981, the first woman to hold the post. She is also remembered her role in the very successful and moving television programme Evensong , shown in the BBC 's Everyman series in December 1992. Her father, Henry Mosley, was then Rector of Poplar, London . He was later appointed Bishop of Stepney and, after nine years, Bishop of Southwell . She was educated at the independent North London Collegiate School and at Cheltenham Ladies' College . Aged 19, she married Michael Ridley, her father's chaplain, and that determined the course of her life for the next 25 years. Michael Ridley became incumbent of parishes in Pimlico and Finchley , then died at an early age in 1953, leaving his widow with four children. Ridley had always had a strong belief that women should not be excluded from those whom the Church would accept as candidates for Holy Orders. (Her father was at one time chairman of a central Council for Women's Church Work). She took many opportunities to forward this cause. She was, for example, in 1979 a founding member of the Movement for the Ordination of Women . As a widow Ridley recognised periodic bereavements as a fact of life. Her only brother had been killed on the last day of the battle of El Alamein . Yet it was not long before new doors were o... ... Read more

Excerpt: Thomas Sydenham (or Syndenham) (September 10, 1624 December 29, 1689) was an English physician. He was born at Wynford Eagle in Dorset, where his father was a gentleman of property. His brother was Colonel William Sydenham. Thomas fought for the Parliament throughout the English Civil War, and, at its end, resumed his medical studies at Oxford. He became the undisputed master of the English medical world and was known as 'The English Hippocrates. Among his many achievements was the discovery of a disease, Sydenham's Chorea, also known as St Vitus Dance. At the age of eighteen Sydenham was entered at Magdalen Hall, Oxford; after a short period his college studies appear to have been interrupted, and he served for a time as an officer in the Parliamentarian army during the English Civil War. He completed his Oxford course in 1648, graduating as bachelor of medicine, and about the same time he was elected a fellow of All Souls College. It was not until nearly thirty years later (1676) that he graduated as M.D., not at Oxford, but at Pembroke Hall, Cambridge, where his eldest son was by then an undergraduate. After 1648 he seems to have spent some time studying medicine at Oxford, but he was soon back in military service, and in 1654 he received the sum of £600, as a result of a petition he addressed to Oliver Cromwell, pointing...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=564669 ... Product Description
Gosford Park is a 2001 film directed by Robert Altman. The screenplay is by Julian Fellowes, based on an idea by Altman and producer Bob Balaban. It features an ensemble cast including Michael Gambon, Alan Bates, Derek Jacobi, Maggie Smith, Helen Mirren, Eileen Atkins, Kristin Scott Thomas, Jeremy Northam, Bob Balaban, Ryan Phillippe, Stephen Fry, Kelly Macdonald, James Wilby, Clive Owen, Emily Watson, Camilla Rutherford, Tom Hollander, and Richard E. Grant. The film is set in 1932 at an English country house. A party of wealthy Britons and Americans accompanied by their servants gather at the home of Sir William McCordle for a shooting weekend. A murder occurs in the middle of the night, the film presenting the murder from both the servants' and the guests' perspective. But rather than a simple mystery to be solved, the film uses the whodunit format to create a drama showcasing the tensions of the British class system. Many intertwining subplots detail the complex relationships among the characters, both above stairs (the wealthy guests) and below (the servants). The film was very well-received by critics, with Altman, Fellowes, Mirren, and others receiving a number of awards. ... Read more
