5-0 out of 5 stars Revenge for Love
Ross MacDonald's THE ZEBRA STRIPED HEARSE has Lew Archer searching for many threads and being fired to be rehired on the same case as he gets closer to the truth.
Before Colonel Blackwell arrives for his appointment Lew gets a visit from his wife Isobel on a mission to help her step-daughter find happiness against her father's obsession that the groom in question is after the young woman's money.
Did Burke Damis leave behind his identity, and two murders to trap Harriet Blackwell into marriage to support him so he has the time to find his grove as an artist? Lew is hired by Blackwell to discover the background of the young man and prevent the marriage.
Harriet is determined to have Damis as a husband. Who will win in the deadly duel of goals and desire?
A great read by a master.
Nash Black, author of TRAVELERS.

5-0 out of 5 stars ROSS MACDONALD'S "THE ZEBRA STRIPED HEARSE"
DO NOT THINK OF ROSS MACDONALD AS A MERE MYSTERY WRITER; HE IS A GIFTED STORY TELLER WITH A STYLE THAT IS SIMPLY WONDERFUL. HE DRAWS YOU INTO THE STORY PAGE BY PAGE, WITH FASCINATING CHARACTERS, CRISP BELIEVABLE DIALOGUE, AND LINES THAT OCCASIONALLY SOUND LIKE POETRY, SUCH AS, "I HAD STARRED GLIMPSES OF THE LAKE BETWEEN THE TREES, LIKE POLISHED STEEL CATCHING THE DROPPINGS OF INFINITY." CAN'T WAIT TO READ EVERYTHING THE MAN WROTE, ESPECIALLY THE LEW ARCHER NOVELS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unabridged reading with a full cast of actors
Retired colonel Mark Blackwell hires private detective Lew Archer to ivestigate his daughter Harriet's new fiancee, painter/layabout(/murderer?) Burke Damis, in The Zebra-Striped Hearse. (The title vehicle actually has a pivotal but otherwise tangential role.) It was the tenth in the popular private-eye series by author Ross Macdonald (the pseudonym of Kenneth Millar), widely considered to be among the top handful of best writers of detective fiction, especially of the hard-boiled noir variety.

Archer begins the case rather simply, but it soon becomes increasingly complex as questions lead to uncovered murders that relate to the case. The deeper Archer gets, and the more people he talks to, the more connections are made until there's a veritable web of links for him to sort through. (At one point, I actually wondered if it were possible for everyone to be guilty, much like a famous mystery set on a train.)

This is a different kind of audiobook and one I'd like to see more of: a full, unabridged reading of The Zebra-Striped Hearse performed by a cast of forty actors, with about a dozen of those tackling multiple roles. Some names may be familiar: Ed Asner plays Colonel Blackwell, with Kathryn Harrold as his wife Isobel, Jennifer Tilly as Harriet, and Joe Pantoliano as Burke Damis.

Prolific character actor Harris Yulin directs and carries the main role of Lew Archer. Yulin grounds the production with his solid portrayal, always in the foreground, but never getting in the way of his supporting actors. Other than Yulin, Asner and Harrold shine the brightest, though Tilly's turn is surprisingly earthy. Pantoliano, unfortunately, is given little to do -- even "understated" would be an understatement here.

The whole venture is underscored by a piano- and trumpet-based soft jazz score that lends the perfect "lonely gumshoe" feel typical of the films of the genre. And film is the word of the day, because unlike single-reader audios, The Zebra-Striped Hearse is really a movie for the mind -- it combines the best parts of unabridged narration and old-time radio. What a terrific way to be introduced to such a legendary series; I only hope the print versions can match up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant by Chandler's Once Famed Heir
Why on earth are these former best sellers almost forgotten? The Lew Archer series gives my personal favorite (and that of an sizable number of mystery fans), Raymond Chandler's superb Phillip Marlowe, a run for the money. Ross MacDonald was a major name in the business for decades, and this story, spellbinding and with a smart and satisfying conclusion, is just terrific. Try it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another stellar novel in a spectacular series
The bad news about this wonderful novel is that it is not Ross MacDonald at his very best. The good news is that it is still far better than most mystery novels that have been written. Of the three great masters of the American hardboiled detective novel, MacDonald never achieved the brilliant prose style of Hammett and Chandler, but neither of those two came close to the meditations on the vagaries of the human soul that MacDonald made his subject over and again. All of MacDonald's novels deal with the consequences of original sin, of an evil that seems to be greater than any individual human being, an evil that constantly threatens to overwhelm human beings when they least anticipate it. Frequently, we discover in MacDonald that, as in the Old Testament, the sins of the fathers have been visited on the second and third generations. Often in his novels, the roots of the crimes of the present lay twenty or thirty or forty years in the past. In this novel, Lew Archer at one points explains to his client, "The past is the key to the present," thus stating explicitly one of the fundamental principles underlying all of MacDonald's fiction. Ironically this novel extends less into the pass than almost any of his other novels. One of his truly great novels such as the incomparable THE CHILL or THE INSTANT ENEMY will extend decades into the past, which MacDonald brilliantly links to the present. Often one gets the sense that MacDonald's is revealing the secret history of his character's lives. This one does as well, but instead of going forty years into the past, he goes merely a few years.

I loved the locales of the novel. Although I wish he physically described the areas Archer visits, MacDonald was always more of an ethicist than a sociologist. He was always less interested in communities and the way society worked than in the way that humans worked and how the decisions they make ripple down through the lives of other human beings. Thus he visits Lake Tahoe, but there is a kind of timelessness to the area he described. In reading Chandler, on the other hand, there is often a deep consciousness of the character and nature of the places where the stories occur. These technique benefits both authors, by providing a concreteness to Chandler's stories that is often missing in MacDonald's, while lending a sense of timelessness to MacDonald that is impossible in Chandler. Most hardboiled writers have tended to follow more in Hammett and Chandler's footsteps than MacDonald's, though James Ellroy is one notable exception.

Though this is not one of MacDonald's best novels, it is still exceptionally enjoyable. It is also one of his least typical. Some people survive you anticipate meeting violent ends (the body count for his central characters is usually quite high). As always, he unrolls his plot skillfully. The characters are all vividly drawn. And unlike many of his other novels, there is more than one unexpected twist at the end. This is as fine a place as any for any newcomer to MacDonald to start, and any MacDonald veteran who has not read it certainly should. It may not contain the glories of his great masterpiece THE CHILL (which more than one critic of the genre considers to be the supreme novel of the entire detective genre), but it is nonetheless a very fine book. ... Product Description
“Senelick’s accomplishment is astounding.”—Library JournalAnton Chekhov is a unique force in modern drama, his works cherished for their brilliant wit and insight into the human condition. In this stunning new translation of one of Chekhov’s most popular and beloved plays, Laurence Senelick presents a fresh perspective on the master playwright and his groundbreaking dramas. He brings this timeless trial of art and love to life as memorable characters have clashing desires and lose balance in the shifting eruptions of society and a modernizing Russia. Supplementing the play is an account of Chekhov’s life; a note on the translation; an introduction to the work; and variant lines, often removed due to government censorship, which illuminate the context in which they were written. This edition is the perfect guide to enriching our understanding of this great dramatist or to staging a production. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars If It's Chekhov, It Must Be a Comedy
I don't think even a seasoned theatre goer could sit through this play if it were directed a drama.I imagine all the brooding speeches, unmotivated pauses, and the inevitable "gloom" of chopping down the cherry trees. The comedy is indeed dark, but sheer silliness abounds with the brother and his imaginary pool shooting, the governess and her magic, and foolishness of Madame Ranevsky.Only two moments are purely dramatic and poignant: the reaction of Ranevsky when Lopakhin purchases the estate, and the death of Firs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quintessentially Chekov
This, Chekov's last play, is the story of Madame Ranyevskaya's family, which lost its wealth, and an estate that included a cherry orchard. The subtext carries the story and is about how not to deal with existentialist stasis -- a state of being immobilized by the fear of change, and the complexity of the denial that under lay this fear. It is this fear and the symbolism it invokes that makes the play universal in its depiction of human fear, suffering, and inability to address change; for at one time or another, these too have engulfed us all.It is against this backdrop that Chekov's real talent, comes to the fore: his incredible ability to graphically develop characters and analyze them psychologically with a fine-tooth comb.

Chekov demonstrates an uncanny ability to draw out the deepest images of personal psychological angst, and is almost comical in his analysis which is always exquisitely sensitive -even of the most serious of issues such as those that beset this wealthy Russian family. The underlying message is that "life must go on" whether or not we address reality squarely in the face, or allow it to hit us in the "behind" as we are on the way out the door, as it did Madame Ranyevskaya and her family, as her creditors came to take away all of her possessions, including her cherry orchard from under her.

This is quintessentially Chekov; but it needs to be read several times to weave together the text with the subtext.

Five stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars Who is the translator?
With hundreds of versions of The Cherry Orchard available, you would think that Amazon would have the sense to name the translator. I think this is the same version used by LA Theater Works in which case the translator would be Michael Frayn.

1-0 out of 5 stars Checkhov for Dummies
This is an abysmal production. To anyone outside of LA the accents will become tiresome(I'm so `stoopid'; in the `bairth'-house etc) and the translation and acting style make this play sound like an episode of a soap opera. The recording begins like so many audio books with an unnecessary spoken introduction - "The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov ...." (like if I was expecting Dolly Parton!).And to make matters worse, the announcer claims it is recorded before a live audience. It is patently not so, there are sound effects galore, including a pathetically obvious laugh track purported to be the audience but not one hint of an actor walking across the stage and, apart from the canned laughter, not a cough, murmur, shuffle or peep from the audience.Nice try LA Theatreworks, it might do for a bored 10th grader who is too lazy to read the text but the whole thing sounds like a bunch of second rate actors with no idea of what they doing. They might get walk-ons in The Bold and the Beautiful if they try harder but this fake acting in front of a fake audience is an insult.

5-0 out of 5 stars On Chekhov's art
Chekhov's plays work on many different levels. On the one it is the story of the characters' relationships to each other. Often in Chekhov there is disillusionment and disappointment, misunderstanding and desire unrealized. Often too the characters have ideas and dreams about themselves which simply do not find their justification in the world. But in all this there is always interspersed moments of tenderness and poignancy, of delicate feeling, perceptions of beauty.
On another level there are ' major themes'. Here it is of the Old Order passing and the coming of the new. The 'Cherry Orchard' is the symbol of this. And the purchase of it by the former serf Lopahin is the sign of the transition taking place in Russia. The old order people, Ranskanaya her daughters and brother cling to the older world, refuse to sell it out by accepting the offer to build on it dachas, and connect it with the railway line. But in the end the extravagance of Ranskaya is forced to yield, and the 'Cherry Orchard' is cut down.
In the final moments of the play the elderly servant Firs, the true symbol of the one raised in the old order and too deeply connected to it, to ever leave it, lies down and seems to pass away.
Chekhov's art is an art of sadness and beauty, of cruelty and change , but above all of human character and feeling portrayed in complexity and contradiction- and in a language of poetic compression deep in feeling.
