5-0 out of 5 stars Encouragement and Acceptance
I frequently look for positive ways to talk about my son's special needs with his sister. She sometimes has a tough time accepting his differences. "Way to Go, Alex" is a great way to open the conversation abouttrying to do our best, and being proud of what we can achieve. This storyhelps my daughter understand that feelings of frustration can be turnedaround to a more positive approach to the challenges she faces having abrother with learning and physical disabilities. The story accuratelydepicts how difficult it is for a child to understand and cope with asibling's disabilities. It is a wonderful introduction to SpecialOlympics.I hope many parents share the story with their children anddiscuss how important an encouraging, supportive, and accepting communityis for people of all abilities. ... Product Description
If there was any one man who articulated the anger, the struggle, and the beliefs of African Americans in the 1960s, that man was Malxolm X. His AUTOBIOGRAPHY is now an established classic of modern America, a book that expresses like none other the crucial truth about our times.
"Extraordinary. A brilliant, painful, important book."
TEH NEW YORKTIMES
Amazon.com Review
Malcolm X's searing memoir belongs on the small shelf of great autobiographies. The reasons are many: the blistering honesty with which he recounts his transformation from a bitter, self-destructive petty criminal into an articulate political activist, the continued relevance of his militant analysis of white racism, and his emphasis on self-respect and self-help for African Americans. And there's the vividness with which he depicts black popular culture--try as he might to criticize those lindy hops at Boston's Roseland dance hall from the perspective of his Muslim faith, he can't help but make them sound pretty wonderful. These are but a few examples. The Autobiography of Malcolm X limns an archetypal journey from ignorance and despair to knowledge and spiritual awakening. When Malcolm tells coauthor Alex Haley, "People don't realize how a man's whole life can be changed by one book," he voices the central belief underpinning every attempt to set down a personal story as an example for others. Although many believe his ethic was directly opposed to Martin Luther King Jr.'s during the civil rights struggle of the '60s, the two were not so different. Malcolm may have displayed a most un-Christian distaste for loving his enemies, but he understood with King that love of God and love of self are the necessary first steps on the road to freedom. --Wendy Smith ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The making of a leader
This book is wonderful. The writing is excellent, and Malcolm X's life story is as amazing as anyone could imagine. Incredible highs and lows are vividly portrayed (for me, one standout is the degradation of Malcolm having to rinse the chemicals out of his hair in toilet water--this incident makes me physically cringe and feel pain for him), and thrilling and fascinating episodes leave me marveling that one person could achieve and experience so much. Later in his life, as his understanding of humanity expands and deepens, my respect and admiration for him likewise grows. I can't adequately describe either the book or the way I feel about it.

I first read this for school, but as I was reading it I knew it was something that I'd truly appreciate and come back to over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Malcolm X
A timeless classic. This book tells the metamorphasis of a strong Black man, from boyhood to manhood. Through all of his trials and tribulations, Malcolm always found a way to gain strength and grow in both mind and spirit. A must read for all Americans. We must not forget his contributions to our society.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of a kind!
This is a book everyone should read. It's a book you can't seem to put down. There is a part of this book that i love.."I read aimlessly, until I learned to read selectively, with a purpose". This book changed the way i viewed certain things in life!

2-0 out of 5 stars Max Notes: The Autobiography of Malcom X
I must have clicked on the wrong item, because I did NOT purposely order Max Notes. I already have two Master's Degrees and a year of Law School. So, I do not need "notes."

1-0 out of 5 stars this are just notes, not the actual book

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Starting Point...
I just recieved this book and think it is an excellent place to start for someone just starting out and building a stash.I also think it could be helpful to the more experienced quilter who is looking to put that extra "sparkle" in their quilts with the use of color.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fabric Shopping with Alex Anderson
I LOVE Alex on HGTV, but I was disappointed in this book.I thought she would give advice on what KIND of fabrics to purchase for quilting, NOT what colors.I found it lacking in the information that would have helped beginning quilters like myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relax and LISTEN to Alex...
We all start out life as little artists. All parents have at least one wall with crayon to testify to this.Yes somewhere along the way that little artist gets lost. The joy of getting 64 crayons is too much, so when faced with a fabric store of 1000's of colors, people need to reconnect with their love of colors and that is where this book succeeds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Helpful
I have been quilting for many years and have never found a book as helpful as this in choosing fabric. It can be very intimidating going into a fabric store and seeing thousands of bolts of fabric.Alex's book gives great advise on picking out a focus fabric and going from there.I would recommend this book to beginners and experienced quilters alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Really a Nut
I have always been aware of Hawkin's career as a Colt but I learned a great deal more from this book.It starts with his life in West Virginia and follows with his high school football. He was a tremendously gifted athlete from the start, as many pros are, but one can learn that he has that "intangible" that makes him truly a special football player.A desire to win at all costs and not ever let a mundane life interfere.I've known some of his comtemporaries and just about everything they said about him is true - even the wild stories. You've got to read it.

Product Description
Did Alaska create the music of John Luther Adams, or did the music create his Alaska? For the past thirty years, the vastness of Alaska has swept through the distant reaches of the composer's imagination and every corner of his compositions. In this new book Adams proposes an ideal of musical ecology, the philosophical foundation on which his largest, most complex musical work is based. This installation, also called The Place Where You Go to Listen, is a sound and light environment that gives voice to the cycles of sunlight and darkness, the phases of the moon, the seismic rhythms of the earth, and the dance of the aurora borealis. Adams describes this work as "a place for hearing the unheard music of the world around us." The book includes two seminal essays, the composer's journal telling the story of the day-to-day emergence of The Place, as well as musical notations, graphs and illustrations of geophysical phenomena. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Holding on to Margaret Way
Margaret Way is a writer whose books I always enjoy. Her books are fast-paced and tightly-knitted with very realistic situations. In 'Holding on to Alex', we have Alexandra Ashton, beautiful principal dancer of The National Australian Ballet who gives up marriage to the man she adores in order to persue her dream , to fulfill her ambition and prove her worth as an individual. Scott Maclaren is devilsihly handsome, rich and powerful and can have any woman he wants. He is embittered by the 'betrayal' of Alex whom he is madly in love with. She chose her career over him on the eve of their engagement because he will not have his wife living apart from him. He sees it as a wilful act of defection. He has known her since she came to live with him at ten as the ward of his aunt because she was orphaned.

Now Scott is informed by his aunt that Alex has been injured in a performance and decides to bring her home for recuperation. His aunt sees this as a second chance for the two young people she loves most in this world. Although Alex tells him she has always loved him and still does, can Scott trust her ? Is Alex willing to be a hands-on wife and let him hold on to her?

This story explores their conflicts in life and with one another. For Alex, the desire to marry the love of her life and be a full-time housewife warring with the desire to spread her wings and be a successful ballerina. Scott cannot fully understand her desire so both lost out. This is a situation many young couples encounter . The choice between marriage and career is a difficult one and the outcome can behappy only if there is compromise and self-sacrifice. I love this story and love Margaret Way's writing . I enjoyed " Beresford's Bride " and " Boardroom Proposal" and will look for more of her books.

The book was in almost new condition and it arrived quickly, as advertised. The information given in the book is very helpful without being overwhelming for a beginning quilter.Besides an initial section on basics, patterns, instructions for and photos of colorful and appealing quilts are included along with expert and practical tips scattered throughtout the book.Particularly helpful are the appendix charts that give yardage requirements and cutting instructions for different bed sizes using the six quilts featured in the book. Good purchase for a great price!
