5-0 out of 5 stars A lesson on Idaho
It's more than just potatoes. Idaho has a lot going for it, and this book will show you and your students what.

The "Portrait of America" series is a sensational and easy to understand introduction for pre-teens to the 50 states and to the places and events that shaped the history of the United States. This "Idaho" installment is very good. The book is broken down into sections like "History", "Culture", "Economy" etc., and each section is thoughtfully written and edited.

This book, as well as the entire "Portrait of America" series, will prove to be a valuable teaching tool to all primary school educators ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not So Much Fun
Ugh.This book is so very slow and boring.I am about halfway through it, but I am not going to bother to finish it.The characters are annoying and not very interesting.Lucky for me, I found this in a dollar bin. That's about 99 cents more than it was worth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Story
Tressa Jayne, news reporter determined to get a good story, and her journalistic partner Shelby Lynne are persistent at trying to interview famous hometown author, Elizabeth Courtney Howard. They hear that Mrs. Howard is home for a few days.Unfortunately, the author is reclusive and eccentric - but will she give in and give them the interview? The journalistic duo go to great and desparate lengths to get an interview.

Meanwhile, Tressa Jayne's grandmother moves in with her. There are lots of activities and adventures in the book.I really like Tressa Jayne and her cool grandmother.

The book is a bit drawn out.And there are elements in it I do not like. Also, I was disappointed because there was not much (or any) "Halloween Fun" in the form of pumpkins, orange cookies, etc.I would not consider this book a cozy.

But most of all, the book was good.It was very well written; the writing style was cute; and the plot was good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny Mystery
Great!I really enjoyed reading the third Calamity Jayne book.Reminds me of Sue Grafton and Janet Evanovich.

4-0 out of 5 stars amusing lighthearted mystery
Grandville Gazette tyro reporter Tressa "Calamity" Jayne feels she needs to stop making the news (see CALAMITY JANE and CALAMITY JANE RIDES AGAIN) instead of reporting the news. She vows to follow insipid events to keep out of trouble and avoid psychos, lunatics, and cops.

Tressa interviews 6 foot 2 inch sarcastic homecoming queen candidate Shelby Lynne, who challenges Calamity to obtain an interview with reclusive New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Courtney Howard. The writer quietly has arrived in Iowa.Tressa accepts the gauntlet deciding to interview the author as the young journalist assumes no trouble can come of that. However, the writer goes to incredible lengths to elude the obstinate Tressa starting with staying at haunted Holloway Hall. However the intrepid reporter with the towering female student taunting her soon gets involved with the strange events at Holloway Hall.

The third Calamity Jayne tale is an amusing lighthearted mystery with a touch of the paranormal.Readers will enjoy the antics of the heroine who wants to cover fluff, but from the opening face to upper torso battle between the two sarcastic female warriors until the final showdown at Holloway Hall, calamity follows every step Tressa takes.Readers will just have fun with Kathleen Bacus' humorous romp.

Product Description

Two months ago, 23-year-old Tressa Jayne Turner knew just where she stood with -Ranger Rick- Townsend. Sure, he-s what you-d call hott with two t-s, but he-s also responsible for her nickname -Calamity.- And ever since they solved that murder last summer-ever since Rick saved her cookies-he-s acted as if he has a god-given right to sample them.

Of course, Tressa has bigger frenches to fry. The Iowa state fair is about to start, and her uncle Frank-s ice cream stand is poised to scoop the competition. So when a soft-serve saboteur appears at the same time her cousin goes missing, it-s another fine sticky mess. It-s time for Tressa to don her hot pink cowboy boots and solve the mystery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Calamity Jayne Rides Again
Tressa Jayne Turner, aka "Calamity Jayne" has had enough of "Ranger Rick" Townsend's treating her as if she was the ice cream that he had the right to lick whenever he wanted.

Right now though, she has more important things to worry about. Specifically, the Iowa State Fair which is her Uncle Frank's busiest time of year, which is when she helps him out.

Who is attempting to sabotage Uncle Frank? And, of course, why? Jayne is first going to solve this mystery and perhaps afterwards take Ranger Rick for the ride of his life.

Kathleen Bacus has a writing style that is reminiscent of Janet Evanovich, yet is totally her own. Her characters are well drawn out and well utilized.Calamity Jayne Rides Again starts of quick and maintains this pace through to the end of the book. Calamity Jayne Rides Again is definitely a book for those moments you just want to forget about the world and go for a good mystery and giggle at the same time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Calamity Jane Rides Again
Great fun read. Written much like the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, and like the Plum series, if you are looking for a definitive ending, keep searching. While the romance is there, it doesn't have the traditional romantic ending. The story is a mystery first and romance second.

4-0 out of 5 stars fun lighthearted mystery
Local author and store clerk Tressa Jayne Turner is concerned with all the things going wrong at her family's ice cream booth at the Iowa State Fair.First her cousin who was to dish out ice cream has gone missing.Second the food concession has come under assault from a horde of invading cockroaches and angry patrons ready to switch loyalty to the soft competitor.

Tressa knows someone is sabotaging her Uncle Frank's concession stand, but who and why is not readily available nor why her cousin seems to have vanished.Determined as ever, Tressa assumes the ice cream sales business has turned cutthroat so she begins sleuthing looking critically at her Uncle's rivals.Meanwhile her nemesis "Ranger Rick Townsend seems more interested this time with her sister than interfering (her thoughts) than helping (his thoughts) as they did in her recent escapade (see CALAMITY JANE).Of course state trooper P.D. Dawkins tells Tressa to not make any inquiries, but what's a girl to do when she finds the cop a hunk, her cousin, and the business melting away; simple investigate Calamity Jane style.

This is a fun lighthearted mystery starring an amiable heroine who finds ways to dive head first into trouble and make problems that much worse as she adds chaos to a chaotic situation. The story line is fast-paced as Tressa comes to the rescue of Uncle Frank, who pleads with his calamitous niece to not get involved as he ahs enough problems. The relationship with Ranger Rick takes another spin as the twenty-three year old Jayne seems to have a new love interest and so does he.Fans of humorous romps will enjoy CALAMITY JANE RIDES AGAIN.

4-0 out of 5 stars Calamity Jayne takes her show on the road...laugh out loud funny
hings are heating up for Tressa Jayne...not only because she's in Arizona, but Ranger Rick is making her temperature rise.

The Turner and Townsend families make their way out west to Flagstaff, Arizona to Tressa's Aunt Kay's for Hannah and Joe's nuptials. Little Nick Townsend, Rick's nephew, is a miniature Ranger Rick and driving Tressa crazy before they even make it to Arizona. He already knows all her buttons and is pushing them like a kid in an elevator.

Tressa needs to find a gift for her gammy and granpappy-to-be. When she sees the perfect fertility idol her gammy would love and Joltin' Joe would be mortified of, she snaps it up. Unfortunately for her, someone else wants the ugly little statue more than she does. And the craziness ensues.

No one believes Tressa when she says the statue is the reason bad things keep happening to them. Then, she and Nick figure out why the statue is so important. And the real "mystery" begins.

Rick and Tressa'a relationship grows in this book more than any other. Tressa knows she wants Rick and he knows he wants her...only problem is that something keeps stopping them from taking the leap. I really like the progression in this book. Rick's revelations at the end show real growth on his part.

This book leaves off where you definitely need to read the next book...it isn't a "cliffhanger," but it does leaving a bit dangling.

One of the better in the series.

3-0 out of 5 stars Jayne Turner Mystery
Tressa Jayne Turner cordially invites you to join her as she heads west for the nuptuals of her grandma to Ranger Rick's Grandpa Joe. She knows there'll be trouble going in, if for no other reason than the happy couple is a recipe for trouble in and of themselves. Not only that, but her sister has chronic air sickness, Rick's nephew is the child from you know where and won't leave her alone, and there's Rick himself who confuses her just by existing. She doesn't need a mystery to solve, but sure enough, when she buys a fertility statue as a wedding gift, Tressa Jayne finds herself up to her neck in alligators as she and her soon to be step-nephew embark on a crazy quest for treasure and try to stay a step ahead of the relic hunter also chasing it and them.

*** Screwball comedy and mystery blend in this unpredictable, slightly campy story. Tressa makes a good narrator as she brings readers along on her wild ride. If you need a mindless laugh, then this is for you. ***

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
I think that this is the best one yet. There is a better follow up to the relationship between Tressa & Ranger Rick. By the end of this book you're frustrated with them, but happy with where they're heading. The plot is pretty good and it's the first time Tressa seems to be the obvious best of the family lot. It's a good read and buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars lighthearted Calamity Jayne caper
Tressa "Calamity" Jayne's crazy grandma is taking the family with her so that they can attend her wedding to the grandfather of Jayne's maybe boyfriend Rick. They are heading to Flagstaff, Arizona. On the trek, Jayne knows she needs to find the right present for her beloved wacko relative and thinks she has succeeded with "Kookamunga" an ugly fertility figurine that reminds her of granny.

However, someone else wants Kookamunga and is trying to steal it.Jayne will do anything to insure granny gets what she deserves so no thief will get away with Kookamunga as far as she is concerned. At the same time, Jayne and her horde of invading relatives including her pain in the butt sarcastic preadolescent nephew begin a treasure hunt while Rick is hot and cold in his affections towards her.

The latest lighthearted Calamity Jayne caper is an amusing thriller as the heroine is overdosing with to too much family. The treasure hunt is fun to follow as Jayne and ilk seem to land in one problem after another.Although her nephew comes across as a brat irritating readers as much as Jayne, fans of the series will enjoy her latest adventures as she and the clan invade the Grand Canyon State.

Product Description
The long Cold War of the twentieth century has ended, but only now are the poisonous legacies of that "first nuclear age" coming to light. Activists and anthropologists, the authors of this volume reveal the devastating, complex, and long-term environmental health problems afflicting the people who worked in uranium mining and processing, lived in regions dedicated to the construction of nuclear weapons or participated, often unknowingly, in radiation experiments. The nations and individuals, many of them members of indigenous or ethnic minority communities, are now demanding information about how the United States and the Soviet Union poisoned them and meaningful remedies for the damage done to them and the generations to come. As nuclear proliferation accelerates, this struggle takes on ever greater urgency. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blondes really do have more fun!
Bacus's laugh-out-loud mystery/romance/comedy novel, complete with heart-pounding romantic encounters and small-town charm, is a cozy read filled with eccentric characters and quick-witted dialogue. If you're interested in a light beach read, pick this one up. A word to the wise: if you're prone to laughing out loud when reading funny books, try not to read Calamity Jayne when you're sandwiched between two sleeping passengers on an airplane...sometimes we learn these things the hard way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest series ever!
This entire series is so hilarious and charming I suggest you just go ahead and grab all the books now. You won't want to wait in between to read them all. Calamity (Tressa) is a riot. You can't help but love her like a sister or best friend as she careens through life getting into one mess after another. I literally laughed out loud several times while reading the books, and not just at Tressa. The supporting cast is just as hilarious, from two old coots who talk more about Viagra than infomercials, to a cousin who is basically allergic to life, and Manny, the loveable tough guy who refers to himself in third person and is verrry secretive about what he does for a living.
I just plowed through the whole series one after the other, totally hooked on Tressa's madcap adventures and dying to know which guy she'd end up with (the back & forth "two-step" she plays with Ranger Rick will keep you extremely involved)but once I finished the last book... it left me depressed. Seriously. I've never been so into a book before that I became upset at the thought of not reading any more. I felt like my best friend had moved away. I really hope Anchors Aweigh isn't the last in the series. Even if Tressa's finally got her man there's still plenty more trouble she can get into. I'd love for this series to continue.

5-0 out of 5 stars FUN!
While I agree that at times I was sometimes jarred by the similarities to Stephanie Plum, I had a lot of fun reading this book.(Plus, it was a relief while I wait for the next Plum novel!)One thing that I really enjoyed about Calamity was all of the references to things that actually happened in the real world in my lifetime.(80's / 90's)I felt like I could relate and it brought me some fun text to self experiences!I always like books better when there is a part of me that can connect with the character in the book.

Rick is the big strong type that is constantly there when she falls into a mess!Loved him!Wish there was more "relationship" with them.I mean even Stephanie doesn't hold out forever with Joe.

I would definitely recommend this book to my friends. In fact, I already have!:-)Enjoy a fun, light read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun book, drags a bit at first
I almost didn't make it past page 50.The opening is slow.Too much time is spent in C.J.'s head going over unimportant details. And I found Tressa's 'voice' kind of annoying rather than funny. Many of the jokes fell flat for me.Also her name isn't Calamity Jane, it's Tressa. That threw me the entire book.I kept getting confused as both names are used interchangeably in dialogue.

This is also true with other characters, and when the killer is finally revealed, I had no idea who he was because there were so many different names floating around.

Once the plot picked up I got into the book and enjoyed it.It was a fun, flirty read.I enjoyed the banter with Rick, and loved Manny, Joe, and Hannah. To me this books comes off as something between the Sookie Stackhouse vampire novels (not vampires thought) and Stephanie Plum. Now that I think about it, there area a lot of similarities to Stephanie Plum.

Best of all, this is a romance novel with sexual tension but without pages and pages of descriptive sex.Yeah!I don't see those very often any more.

I'd recommend Calamity Jane as a summer beach read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Enough already!
The best thing about this book is that it does have funny moments and the plot is a good idea.HOWEVER, oh my gawd! The heroine's stupidity (supposed to be charming), got VERY old and went on way too long. Not funny.I got bored with all the Lucille-Ball-badly-done antics, gave up about halfway through and skipped to the end, something i've only done one other time in my life.I don't think i missed a thing by skipping half the book. ...
