Best Hollywood Celebrity Book Ever!!!
I must say that when I received this book, I was completely taken back by it's beauty & painstakingly detailed memories shared by Lana's daughter, Cheryl.She opened up her heart as well as her memories and shared pictures that were incredible.I've read every book in regards to Lana Turner and even Cheryl's autobiography, "Detour" and this book surpassed anything that I, as a fan, could have hoped for.Thank you Cheryl for sharing you & your mother's life with me.It was simply just a different time & I related to so many things that went on during the years that we grew up in.

A glowing and loving tribute to MGM's most glamorous star...
There is simply nothing to criticize in this glowing tribute to Lana Turner by her daughter Cheryl Crane. So much care and talent has gone into the making of this book, obvious from the quality of the cover shot and all of the pages that follow. Turner's glowing presence is revealed in photo after photo, best of all in the relaxed candids where her dimpled smile reveals a sense of humor and fun that was part of her off screen personality.

Organization-wise, it departs from the traditional biography by presenting her life in well-organized sections before we get to her filmography. By the time we get to look at the section covering her films, we have a pretty good handle on who Lana Turner was due to all of the insightful commentaries her daughter has given on all aspects of Lana's stardom.

The photos are a stunning assortment of glossy studio photography as well as candids that show Lana surrounded by either co-stars or her adoring public. All of them feature captions which shed further light on what is happening at the time the photos were shot.

For any movie fan who has been fascinated by Lana Turner and her film career, this is a must. Probably the most glamorous of all the studio portraits is the one taken for "The Prodigal," an outrageously over-the-top fable featuring a scantily clad Lana as a priestess who has to perform a human sacrifice for the garish finale. It's the ultimate in glamour and has to be seen to be believed.

Among her finest films, my personal favorites begin with the romantic comedy, "Slightly Dangerous," followed by heavier fare such as "Ziegfeld Girl," "The Postman Always Rings Twice," "Green Dolphin Street," "Peyton Place," "Imitation of Life," and "Madame X." All of them get loving treatment and behind-the-scenes commentary from her daughter, typical of the incisive "I was there" type of information that only her daughter could have written.

Summing up: A glowing tribute worth any movie fan's time and worth every penny spent on it, a classic act in every way.

Incredible Homage To a BEAUTIFUL Star
Recently received this item, I've barely scratched the service of this mesmerizing intimate view of the gorgeous Lana Turner.Thanks to daughter Cheryl, this incredible display of dazzling pictures is worth the price of admission alone-if you find Lana as photogenic as I do.It's a large hard-bound book-the cover alone is a keepsake and will find it's rightful place on display in my home.After starting to enjoy older movies with thanks to TCM, I recently say Lana's "The Postman Always Rings Twice"-WOW WOW WOW!The price of this item via a reseller on Amazon was incredible, and the views of this Hollywood STAR is candescent.I'm also looking forward to reading Cheryl Crane's accounts of her mother.You'll not regret getting this item-thanks again to Cheryl Crane for her loving detailed sharing of her mother Lana.I'm sure after finishing this book there will be plenty of Lana Turner movies I'll be tuning into on TCM! ... Marvelous, Interesting, Compassionate!
We enjoyed this marvelous, interesting and compassionate book on the relationship of Lana Turner and Taylor Pero.It is very obvious that Mr. Pero thought VERY highly of Lana and it a very wonderful book.Mr. Taylor knows his subject extremely well and relates to the reader his experiences with her and her travels and life.It would be great if a movie could be made from this book.

i bought this book awhile ago and just recently got around to reading it! i loved it! i could tell that taylor really did care a great deal about lana, and there was no venom in his pen, although you could tell he was alittle hurt about the bad things that went on between them, he doesn't let his book mire in it! a must read for any lana fans

A MESSAGE FROM THE AUTHOR
Since I cannot review my own work, I want to impart some knowledge about the publication of this saga. It was written without the consent of Lana Turner after our ten year personal and professional relationship ended badly. Bantam Books was extremely cautious in making sure that every detail of the story could be authenticated. They made me prove every word I wrote through both their 'in-house' attorneys as well as my own attorney's at Mitchell, Silberberg & Knupp, the largest entertainment law firm in the world. Many thanks to Don Biederman, who was my personal counsel. Jeff Rovin pointed out to me upon publication that 80% of this book was printed exactly as it came off my typewriter, which gave me the impetus to continue learning the craft. Lana Turner was the only person who did not like what I wrote (because it was all true). It was to take the spotlight off of "Always, Lana" that she conspired to dictate her 'Autobiography', which many found lacking in truth and detail. With much respect to Miss Turner, I understand how difficult it is to 'tell all' when you've spent a lifetime putting it behind you and trying to sweep it under the rug. In my case, I had nothing to lose and decided to tell it as I saw it and divulged things about myself which hurt to admit, but this book is the result of a ten year, 24/7 relationship with not only Lana Turner, but her mother, daughter, career, social life, professional triumphs and failures. In short,it's the true story of a motion picture screen queen and a man nineteen years her junior who comes into her life at the twilight of her screen career and helps her triumph in a completely new medium -- live theater! The Hypnotist's Stooge
Self-serving predictability is to be expected from this kind of thing but I was surprised to find it so completely, almost improbably, dull considering the life it purports to recount. Synopsis: A frigid romantic stumbles blindly into cinema, seven (or eight) marriages, two abortions, and a homocidal daughter. Reading the love letters Turner sent her murdered gigolo will tell you more than anything you'll find in this publicist's dream account of a battered spouse, either about the murder or the woman herself.

A fascinating woman!
I think Lana Turner wrote a wonderful autobiography.
Her life was very complicated, interesting and glamorous.
She covers everything in this book.
She starts with her childhood, and talks about how she really was discovered.She talks about her career in movies, her co-stars, her relationships with men, her daughter, everything.
She does go into all the rumors about her life.She openly discusses the scandals and questions people have about events in her life.
She also goes into the difference between her real self and "Lana Turner" the movie star.
I think this is an in-depth, interesting autobiography by a beautiful, smart and talented movie star that is absolutley worth reading.

As I read Lana Turner's book, written in her words, I really felt like I knew her.Her personality was so familiar to me and made the book that much more interesting than other star biographies.Very well written and fascinating!I treasure this book.

Betrayal of Friendship: The Private Diary of My Life with Lana
As a fan of Lana Turner's, I bought the book used. The book is well written and keeps you entertained. However, the inconsentecies, make a person realize that there is no documentation to support Mr. Root's story. For example, Lana Turner died on June 29th, 1995. Mr. Root's writes Lana died on June 27th 1995. Also, Mr. Root's writes Lucille Ball hasn't spoke to Ginger Rogers since RKO days. However, anyone can buy a dvd of Here's Lucy and see Ginger Rogers as a guest star on Lucille Ball's program. I think the real story is unfortunately at rest with Lana. In the book, Mr. Root seems to have portrayed Cheryl Crane as Christina Crawford in Mommie Dearest. The line of Cheryl beating her mother is unforgivable. All we have is his word, no proof in his book, except Lana's testimony who is deceased at this time. The rare photos make this book but I would never buy this book alone for it. If Mr. Root was a best friend of Lana Turner's, I think he betrayed this friendship by writing this book. In the book, the flimsy explanation of a son telling lies to Lana on him is ridiculous, which ended their friendship, in my opinion.Also, the story that Cheryl and Josh claimed that Lana near dying stated she was a lesbian is ridiculous too. All Cheryl ever does is tell how much Lana loved men. Shame on you for writing this book. Your story is more of a reflection of one of Lana's great movies "The Bad and the Beautiful." In my opinion, this is a great story but belongs in the fictional section. If you are a true Lana fan, don't buy this book.

Eric Root?
I sat behind this idiot Eric Root at a memorial tribute to the late June Allyson in L.A. on Nov. 2, 2006. At this event numerous stars like Jane Russell, Gloria DeHaven, Tippi Hedren, Debbie Reynolds, Melanie Griffith, Jane Withers, Larry Gelbart & his wife Pat Mitchell, Rich Little, Margaret O'Brien, & others had gathered to honor and remember & pay tribute to the late June Allyson. From the moment Eric Root sat down in front of me he could not resist calling attention on himself throughout the entire program which was in honor of a deceased woman. He would yell out "Absolutely!" at the drop of a hat in response to anything any of the stars on stage said & then would loudly talk to the people next to him (he was with "a Bloomingdale of Bloomingdale's dept. store," I heard him LOUDLY announce). It was incredibly distracting & rude. Frankly I've never seen an adult behave that way in my entire life. He even turned to other people and LOUDLY talked during June's film clips which were played. Also he LOUDLY announced to anyone within earshot that "they're making a movie of my life with Lana Turner!" Yeah, right. This guy's picture has gotta be next to the word sycophant in the dictionary. Absolutely pathetic. What a fool.

NOT the TRUTH!A"Fairy-Tale"
My name is Taylor Pero, author of "ALWAYS, LANA" 1982, Bantam Books paperback.As Miss Turner's personal manager and confidante, Eric Root was introducted to Lana Turner my myself alone.I met him through a gay personals ad shortly after beginning my job for Miss Turner.I have kept all of the love letters and half-naked Poloroid photo he sent in his own hand-writing and would be happy to make them public in order to put an end to what Lana Turner often described as "his flapping lips".I can't describe the misinformation contained here and can only say that he used me to get to her and her to climb the ladder.He is a very talented hairdresser, but the kind who gives others of his profession a bad name.

It is as it was
I am currently producing a documentary on the life of Eric Root and I can tell you after interviewing dozens of Hollywood's biggest stars that those who Know Eric will vouch for his Honesty and integrity including Elizabeth Taylor. As far as Cheryl Crane wanting to sue Eric, she tried but couldn't why because her lawyers could not find any reason to. Apparently Cheryl was jealous because for a good portion her life Eric was closer to her mother than she was, but we won't go into that here. As for "Mr. Roots greedy little pen" Eric is very well off and donated most of the proceeds from this book to several charities. Eric's work with those in need is well known. What a previous reviewer detects as "bitter pages" was more frustration with Lana than anything to be bitter about. Lana wasn't the easiest person to get along with sometimes, but she definitely loved Eric. So far our research has concluded that the book is the truth. There are a few things in there that we'll never be able to prove one way or another but based upon our research and interviews it is as it was. Currently there are a number of producers that want to make a movie about the life of Eric Root of which Lana was only a part. Eric Root is one of the only living icon hairdressers left. Some of his credits include style director for I Magnum and Saks Fifth Avenue. Clients J. F. Kennedy, Rose Kennedy, Greta Garbo, Elizabeth Taylor, and on and on. Eric has had a remarkable life and I think it will make a great movie!

TIDBITS FROM THE GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD
Lana, the story of the ravishing blonde actress who reigned as queen of MGM studio, is another reminder that fame, fortune, and beauty can't buy happiness.In fact, sadly for La Turner, sometimes it is just the opposite.

Jane Ellen Wayne, the author of bios of other screen luminaires packs her book with data, not much of which is new but its neatly compiled in these pages.

Cosseted and marketed by Louis B. Mayer, the dictator-paterfamilias of MGM, Lana, according to this author, was ill equipped to recognize reality.Celluloid was her milieu; that was where she worked and tried to live.

The history of her screen roles is well known to fans as well as the many romances with her leading men.Her personal life took a toll:murder, seven mis-marriages and seven wrenching divorces left her with little else but her reflection on the screen.

A derivative, cut-and-paste cheapie.
A definitive biography of Lana Turner has yet to be written.Wayne has read Turner's memoirs and those of her daughter Cheryl Crane and Turner's ex-secretary to produce this trifle.The book is not sourced, there is nooriginal research, and the result is a rehash of old info. Early Book Biography Of Miss Turner
I found a paperback copy of this book at a second-hand store, and I have read it several times since.Written while Lana was still living, it does give many juicy details of her life and career.The Stompanato incident is detailed quite well, but Cheryl Crane's sexual molestation by Lex Barker isn't mentioned (perhaps it came out later). Alas, there are no photos included (save for the one on the cover).It's a pretty good read, but probably not as detailed as some of Miss Turner's later biographies.Recommended for fans of Lana. ... A beautiful tribute to America's "sweater girl"!
Okay, it's this simple: If my house was on fire, this is THE book I'd save (and I own several hundred) from destruction! When I first saw the film noir masterpiece "The Postman Always Rings Twice" several years ago, I instantly became a life-long Lana Turner fan. Honestly, I think she's the most beautiful woman that ever lived! Unfortunately, books about Lana Turner are few and far between, but I'd say this is easily the cream of the crop. There's nearly 300 pages of glorious b & w photos that cover her entire life. However, don't expect to find out anything new about her many marriages, affairs, and of course the murder of Johnny Stompanato, as this book focuses mainly on her many films. I recommend her autobiography for those wanting to learn more about her personal life. This awesome book is packed with hundreds of great photos of Lana, and it examines each and every role she ever had in Hollywood. I don't know why such a fabulous book would go out-of-print, but you can still get a used copy on Amazon from a seller. If you wanna be captivated by the amazing beauty of Lana Turner then this book is an absolute must-have!

The most beautiful "Films Of" book ever
"The Films of Lana Turner," by Lou Valentino, is the handsomest, most knowledgeable book of its type that I have ever read or seen. Valentino, the most recognized authority on and collector of Turner memorabilia, has written what amounts to a mini-biography of this beautiful, underrated film actress, inluding film-by-film descriptions and backstage glimpses of each film that are accurate and fascinating. He has opened his treasure trove of stills to provide the most lavishly illustrated pages. If Turner fans can lay hands on this book, snap it up. It is a "must" for the Lana admirer/collector.

credit is due to author lou valentino for writing and designing this superlative addition to the popular citadel "films of..." series of books which includes illustrated editions on hollywood stars as diverse as greta garbo and tyrone power, laurence olivier and alan ladd. this is one of the very best of the lot - thanks to its authors wealth of knowledge not just about turner, but also the movie factories which nurtured her shimmering star, with their corps of still photographers, costume designers, fan writers et al. beautifully produced with rare and amusing stills including several previously unpublished candids and behind the scenes glimpses of the "great" turner, and anchored to a text that is both affectionate, witty and insightful. a lovely job, and a veritable "holy grail" for fans of lana. thanks, lou!

The sex goddess's seemingly endless power to influence and fascinate, to achieve in a sense her own self-reproduction through many decades of "re-makeovers" reveals her positioning in American culture as not only a lasting image but also as a potentially powerful and subversive force. The sex goddess is often thought by feminist film theorists to be little more than a projection of the male imaginary. However, this book makes a necessary correction to this trend by demonstrating how the actresses performing the role of sex goddess in fact use the feminine imaginary to create their own agency. Through their performance of "hyper" femininity, and with their seductive power, they exert control not only over their filmic narrative "targets of seduction" but their viewers as well.The ability to hold their objects of seduction in such thrall suggests that the image of the sex goddess possesses a power far more subversive than what has been previously explored; in fact, to date there has not yet been a critical study of the sex goddess in film. Cinema becomes a place where the sex goddess's designation as sex itself can further suggest her bodily signification as a whole discourse on sex outside of her cinematic representation, thus loading her body to be read almost entirely in terms of sex and its corresponding contemporary social thought. Lana Gets Her Due
This book is a must for Lana Turner fans and even for people like me who like her but have many others who are bigger favorites.This is a lavishly illustrated paperback that critiques Turner's career up to 1976.Basinger is clearly a fan of Turner's and is never really harsh on any of Turner's performances or even films (with a couple of exceptions from late in her career like THE BIG CUBE); Lana was obviously pleased as she referred to Basinger's comments once or twice in her 1982 autobiography!!It's nice to read something so upbeat on a lady who had often had such turmoil in her life. ... Terrible
Not worth the time it takes to read.She misquotes lines from movies, and as it's entirely possible to watch these and quote them accurately, you have to assume she spent as much time with these lines as she did with the rest of the material here.It's really laughably bad.

Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

don't waste your $$
I can't make head nor tail of this book as it does not include footnotes...are we meant to think that she could read the minds of all of these long-dead stars and knew exactly how much or how little one enjoyed sex with one man vs. another, etc...also it is written poorly, with many rather damning claims simply stated in a sentence and then no more about it. I am not sure who this woman is or was, but this is not among the sort of books one should use for any sort of research...i wonder if she has been sued by any of the estates of these stars...i did not know you could simply write things that he or she allegedly said (or thought) and not be required to list a source...

Sensationalist gossip masquerading as an informative biography.
It's not often that I venture forth to offer a review on Amazon, but I was so upset with this book that I had to speak up. I checked this book out of my University library to help with research for a film exhibit I am working on. I was hoping to find an at most academic and at least intelligent, or reliably informative retelling of the lives of these famous actresses within, how they were perceived by the viewing public, and the effect they had on the film industry during their tenures as stars. What I got was a sensationalist account concerned only with detailing every sexual encounter these women ever had, and taking delight in citing most of them as gay or bisexual, something that is not offensive to me but seems particularly overemphasized in this book.

Why is it important to know that several of these women didn't wear underwear on the set? This book is full of lascivious quotes from male film stars about the sexual appetites of all of these women, and time and time again I found myself questioning the legitimacy of these sources, not to mention the bias of what these men were saying considering attitudes about women at the time. Perhaps even more offensive, in Wayne's account none of these women are allowed to succeed on their own without men. Instead Wayne depicts their careers as driven primarily by sex, and there is no real examination of how these women succeeded based on their own talents or business savvy. They need men to land roles in films, they need men to fulfill whatever emotional void is in their life, and don't forget they prey on men like the vamps many portrayed on screen to fulfill their rampant sexual appetites. But I kept asking, over and over, so what? The dreaded question that every historian or biographer should strive to answer to justify the time and money spent into publishing any paper or book. The drivel presented here doesn't even attempt to answer this question.

There's no denying that none of these film stars were saints, but what does this book honestly add to any serious or intelligent discussion of film? Whether or not these actresses were as oversexualized as Wayne takes delight in portraying them, they are fascinating subjects who captured the imaginations of millions through their revolutionary presence on screen, whether through sheer talent, manipulation of their images, or both. They were acting during one of the most fruitful times for women in Hollywood in many cases, when women were allowed to be sexual and independent creatures who strove for what they wanted in their roles on screen. But instead of even attempting to point this out, Wayne is almost offensively interested in cataloging everything that supposedly went on in their bedrooms.

This book read like the worst of gossip columns with no analysis that even the more disappointing biographies I have read for this project made sure to offer. Further, the endless catalog of love affairs reads like a laundry list, making the writing bland and boring no matter how tantalizing the questionable subject matter attempts to be.

pure speculation
i have read the book and i keep wondering if any of this really true. it is just pure specualtion. idle gossip. but it was fun reading it. why was so much attention given to grace kelly when she only made a couple pictures with MGM. katharine hepburn was a much bigger star and the author gave her a couple of pages. just not enough.

Not Worthy for the Collector
Miss Wayne clearly did not investigate the rumors that fills this book.Many of her facts are not validated and that many more are known to be just rumor.The typographical errors abound, i.e. Wiltshire Boulevard in Los Angeles - it is Wilshire Boulevard.Her dates are deplorable - i.e. Esther Williams and Fernando Lamas were married for 22 years from 1969 until his death in 1982 - that's 13 years, Miss Wayne!
