The Incredible Rags-to-Riches Story of One of the Bestselling Female Artists of All Time

Shania Twain has risen from humble beginnings in a dirt-poor mining town in Northern Canada to amazing heights of superstardom. At the age of eight her mother was taking her to sing in lumberjack bars; now she shares a Swiss mansion and an estate in New Zealand with her record-producer husband and is worth more than $100 million. Hits such as "Man! I Feel Like a Woman" and "That Don't Impress Me Much" ensured that her third album, Come On Over, became the bestselling album in country-music history and her astounding crossover to mainstream music swiftly followed. Her life, however, has remained the subject of speculation and controversy.

British music journalist Robin Eggar has talked to Shania's close friends, family, business associates -- and to Shania herself -- to build an insightful, rounded portrait of a woman whose Cinderella tale has become a fable for our times. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting reading
Strange, I have never been a fan of country music. Let alone Shania Twain. I live in South East Asia and no one here is a fan of country. But I have heard her songs before.I mean I do like You're Still the One and absolutely adore That Don't Impress Me Much. What a fun song. It was not until a month ago that I saw THS: Country Divas which showcase Shania, Faith Hill and Dixie Chicks. I was all of sudden interested in Shania's story. I knew she wasn't American but Country Divas provided some interesting stories.I went out and bought her latest albums to listen. Surprisingly I have Come On Over (International version) in my CD collection. Guess it was one the MUST HAVE CD of the 90's. And I bought this book to read, wanting to know more. And I wasn't disappointed. Well written and there are moments where you wonder, she really did all this to achieve her dream? Incredible. It was a great story about someone who had nothing to having everything in life. Now I am a fan...not about her music alone, but her journey to achieving amazing things in life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book, Amazing Story for an Amazing Woman!
I received this book 2 days ago and I was so satisfied by the service! The book is written by a British celebrity journalist Robin Eggar and it is justgreat.

The story starts with Shania's great-grandfather's amazing story of survival, and ends when the breakthrough artist Shania Twain released her Greatest Hits album in November 2004.

It is a very-well researched book that gave me information about the Queen Of Country I have never heard before, even being a big fan of hers since 2002.

For Shania fans and non-Shania fans, this book is the ultimate story of her rags-to-riches adventure.

Product Description

Shania Twain is the hottest woman in country music. With a truckload of number one hits, album sales to rival those of fellow Canadian divas Celine Dion and Alanis Morissette, scores of major awards (including a Grammy for Best Country Album), and legions of loyal fans around the world, she is the reigning goddess of New Country. But it took true grit for this sultry songbird to rise from a hardscrabble childhood to megastardom.

The life of Shania Twain is a Cinderella story plucked from a country song. After growing up in poverty in the north woods of Canada, singing in bars since the age of eight, and taking care of her younger siblings when her parents died tragically, she adopted the name Shania (Ojibwa Indian for "I'm on my way"). Signed to a recording contract, she went on to meet and marry her Prince Charming, superproducer "Mutt" Lange. Together they created The Woman in Me, the biggest-selling album by a female artist in country music history. With her latest release, Come on Over, Shania is about to reach even greater heights .

ON HER WAY is the dazzling chronicle of a dynamic, determined woman, a rags to riches story that will break your heart one moment and send it soaring the next.

5-0 out of 5 stars And she's still on her way...
Awesome biography with great sense of detail in the information... Great info about Shania's life...
One bad point: the story ends as Shania starts her Come On Over tour... (a little outdated) but Shania's childhood is what matters... GREAT!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Oh Brother
This is to (Larry S, "Mad Puppy") AWWWWWWW poor shania grew up poor. Well so do alot of people including myself. And shania's music is about a bibble gum and elementary as britney spears. Shania is one big joke to us country fans. Quantity does not = quality. Just cause she sells a whole latta cd's does not mean her music is good and it shore as hell dont mean her music is country. Theres a sucker born ever minute. She is a nashville POP singer. And Of course shania has sold more than any other country singer, she is marketed world wide. And if her music is country then why is it advertised and marketed as pop in other countries????????? And the scenstories thing is just another way for shania to suck the money out of the pockets her gullabe obsessed fans. And what would reba know?? Reba aint sang a country song it 17 years. Reaba is a big ol' sell out just like shania. All shania has is her look. she cant sing to save her life.Shania is a has been in the country world. Bye bye shania. All you shania fans should go listen to Hank Sr. Now THATS country. How many of shania's fans listen to hank. Probably NONE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shania- The "Jesus" of Country Music
This book does a good job of covering the life of Shania in a summary manner due to its Reader's Digest nature (mini-book or long article).

The Nashville power base or good olde redneck boys hate Shania cause she ain't "true" country. No matter that she has sold more CD's than any other country artist, male or female.

Country music was declining in sales before Shania was discovered. She has brought new life to country music on a global scale, but gets few awards at the annual CMA ceremony and too many bad reviews by the media critics(magazine, radio jocks). Like Jesus Christ she's being crucified by the power politician's or "priest's" of country "religion".

Critics say she's a bubble gum singer(lyrics) which laughingly describes most country artist songs; she's too pop; she can't sing before a live audience (when she delayed in going on a concert tour after the Woman In Me CD)... on and on.

What matters most is her millions of world-wide fans love her, which shows in the number of CD's, DVD's sales, tickets sold at her live concerts around the world.

Shame on Nashville for crucifying this highly talented, and lovely lady.Jealousy is a nasty character flaw, along with hate, revenge...

Reba McEntire is quoted in the book "... It's almost like everybody is jealous of her success and I don't like that."
RIGHT ON, REBA!

5-0 out of 5 stars surprisingly tasty
Picked it up waiting in line in an east-kansas wal-mart.Couldn't put it down.I was expecting your garden-variety teen idol trash that you usually read while waiting in line to pay for your Funions and Blue Star Ointment.I picked it up for the cover shot of Shania, but kept it for the intensity of the words that lay behind the photo.Gray is obviously a guy as passionate about Twain as I am.To him, the scribe, I would like to say: "Keep scribblin'".After tossing a Carmex and a pack of Chiclets in my bag, I gladly paid the blue-vested cashier and rushed home to learn the rest of the story.Thank you Shania, for the music, and Mr. Gray for the courage to bring her story to us!

On Her Way is a must-read for anyone who waves the young-country flag.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not My Kinda Biography
I love Shania, and this book has some great information about her life, and the experiences that shaped her. The problem is that the author's "extensive research" consists of reading every magazine article ever written about Shania, which the author has to acknowledge every time he quotes one. That means that almost every paragraph in the book contains a sentence like, "As she said in the May 1998 issue of Canadian Country Music Disgest...". I found this aspect of the book very annoying! If not for my interest in Shania, I wouldn't have had the stamina to finish this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The #1 Shania book to buy !
I have read every possible book on Shania Twain.. This one is the best I have read.It really tells the story where the story needs to be told.Once I picked it up to read, I could not put it down until I finished.Ifyou love Shania,You'll love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
Shania Twain is an all around great person. She will never be forgotten in my mind. She is really the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing book, but has a few problems
This was a wonderful book, especially since Shania is my favorite singer. There's one thing I'd like to say though. If you're going to write a biography, you should know how to spell their name!!Shania doesn't spellher real name "Eileen", she spells it," Eilleen" !!!!!!Also, she was 22 when her parents were killed. It was on November 1, 1987,and she had been 22 for 2 months. She wasn't 21, so get it right!!

5-0 out of 5 stars On My Way was a great book
Shania Twains' book was the best I have ever read.I am a big fan and this book told me everthing about her, and how she has grown into a big music star. This is an esential for anyone who calls themself a Shania Twain fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing bio of an intriguing woman
As an avid fan of Twain's, I was eager to find out more about her than the average photo op magazine interview reveals.Alas, much of this book consists of quotes from such interviews with Williams' own opinions and interpretations (and dramatic attempts to tie things to the lyrics of her not-so-deep songs) thrown in.Precious little is actually revealed about her underprivileged childhood. There are some fresh things for American audiences concerning the squabble over Shania's Native American heritage, mostly culled from Canadian newspaper reports.Williams' doesn't hide any of her tendencies to revise history and form a public image, but he does make excuses for and even dismiss them.Twain is accurately portrayed as a fearless survivor and a savvy businesswoman who openly acknowledges that she's working the system but this much I already knew. There's a driven quality to Shania that he doesn't explore. The photos are, of course, beautiful, but none are private and few are from the past.If Williams had conducted some interviews of his own rather than relied on second-hand material, this would have been a much better book.My only praise for 'On My Way' is that it compiles interviews one may have missed elsewhere. ... The first country song I have ever heard was "Any Man of Mine".That song was so awesome and so unique, that I became an engrossed fan of Shania Twain. She will always be my favorite singer, not just country, but including every other genre.

This is by far the best one yet! I didn't think it was possible after her last one! Shania has the electricity, enough to charge up everyone who has a chance to hear her or see her! She's not only beautiful on the outside, but beautiful on the inside as well! Cant wait to meet her in personsomeday! Till then, I will just keep listening to her sweet music!!

Well put with the events of switching into the Whitewater mode from the Iran Contra Scandal Hearings.I mean I couldn't Love Bill any more or less now than I do right now.I have alot of respect for a man that has put upwith Al Gore and Hillary bouncing him around for the pleasure of securingtheir illegal mishandling of money and in Home Ain't Where His Heart is AnyMore hebill's babys' and James sometimes sounding like Chains could raisethe hair on the back of some make others sit down and cry since he didn'tstart Whitewater affairs and could make others applaud.Me I just love themusic.I have been fighting the effects of someone stealing from others solong. To the point that the bank robber just might live on the outside alittle longer. His ghost be with us even longer... Ghost go where there isnot a soul present.I must be missing mine.Anyway Shania you havetraveled with me on many occassions with the music the excitement you mustexperience is something I can not show.I know it can feel both bad andgood at the same time. And frustrating as hell to adjust.Believe me whenyou find your comfort zone you will be okay.Sorry if all the fuss hasmade you want to move back to Canada; It will all come togeather if ithasn't for you all ready.Just keep pluging away and eventualy it makessince.

The story of Shania Twain' remarkable achievement and undaunted spirit. She is the best-selling country woman artist inhistory, despite controversy over her Native roots and suggestive, midriff-baring videos. Raised poor in a Native family in a northern Canadianmining town, she supported her siblings after her parents' deaths by singing in a cabaret, where she was discovered by Mercury Records. Hercareer languished until she met fabled producer Mutt Lange, who encouraged her to record her own songs and proposed marriage. Withsteadfast integrity, they revolutionized the spirit of country music, crossing genres from country to pop and rock and forging new possibilitiesfor country women artists. ... Read more
