5-0 out of 5 stars Family Power
This book give practical advice on how to have a healthy weight family. With children being overweight at an increasing number each year this book should be read by all parents and the techniques put into practice. School administrators need to read it as well so they can understand why school's need to have a physical education program.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book - good ideas
I wasn't sure if I should get this book.I almost felt like I could write the book on healthy meals for my family. But, the price was right and I am always looking for a new tip.I'm about half way through the book and am really enjoying it.The advice is good and realistic. And, yes, I have learned a few new tips.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic information
This book was well organized, easy to read and understand, and gave good basic information. The healthy eating solutions are easy to implement in daily life.I learned some new things and remembered some things I already knew.

5-0 out of 5 stars WW'S FAMILY POWER

One of the best books WW's has put out!

4-0 out of 5 stars Directions for a Healthy Weight Family
I wasn't really sure what I was getting when I ordered this book. The book is based on a new program being piloted now by Weight Watchers. The program, in limited areas now teaches parents on how to encourage a "Healthy Weight" home. What surprised me is how different this program is from the one designed by Weight Watchers for adults as part of their nationally available program. For one, they strongly discourage parents from placing all but the most obese of children on a diet and then only with the close supervision of a physician.

The book trains parents on the "5 Simple Rules."
1.Focus on wholesom, nutritious foods.
2.Include treats.
3.Aim to keep nonhomework screen time at two hours (or less) per day.
4.Try to be active an hour per day.
5.The Rules apply to everyone in the home.

While that should tell you all you need to know about the program there is so much more.My daughter 4, does not currently have a weight issue, however as an over obese person since childhood I watch her closely to attempt to prevent her from having the same weight issues I have.I was shocked to learn all of the things I am doing wrong.Everything from what snacks/treats I give her to forcing her to clean her plate, and at least a dozen other things.

One of the things I loved about this book it there was no encouragement to make drastic life altering adjustments to your life.In fact, the book encourages gentler simple steps your family can carry out.It doesn't tell you what order to complete the rules in, but to start with the ones you know you can do.The book offers real life concerns and solutions that even the most out of shape family can take to heart.

The book also discourages you from weighing your children more than when they are at the physician's office or even discussing weight in front of them.If anyone in your house struggles with their weight this book is a must have.I wish it had been available to my parents when I was young, I only hope I can learn enough from it to prevent the same mistakes in my children. ... Vieira was born in East Providence, Rhode Island, to Mary Louisa Elsie Rosa Silveira Vieira (19142004) and Dr. Edwin Vieira (19041987), both first generation Portuguese-Americans. All four of Vieiras grandparents came from the Azores, three from Faial Island, one of the nine islands in the archipelago. Vieira was raised Roman Catholic, but has stated in recent interviews that she has "spirituality, not a religion." Vieira attended the Lincoln School, a Quaker all-girls school in Providence. Product Description
Three neon-bright layers of cake, tilted at a jaunty angle and adorned with edible chocolate candles; a Jackson Pollock–inspired cheesecake spattered with chocolate, caramel, and peanut butter icing; and a swarm of plump bees perched atop a rainbow of candy-colored cupcakes—these are only a few examples of the unfettered creativity at work at the Riviera Bakehouse. There, mother-daughter bakers Kaye and Liv Hansen turn out some of the most charming, refreshingly eccentric cakes ever to grace a birthday or wedding celebration.

Kaye and Liv believe that a cake should taste as good as it looks, so they skip esoteric (and inedible) decorations in favor of simple buttercream, flavored whipped cream, and tinted candymaker’s chocolate, covering their luscious cakes with amusing designs and gorgeous color that are easy to make and delicious to eat. The cakes themselves are no less enticing, pairing old-fashioned favorites like Banana Cake and Spice Cake with sumptuous fillings such as French Custard and Chocolate Mousse. Simple step-by-step lessons, illustrated with photographs, explain how to re-create Liv’s charming chocolate designs, from the bright polka dots that shine against dark chocolate glaze to the shimmering stars that adorn the enchanting “Starry Night.” Templates for the delightful designs allow you to adapt these techniques to create your own unique decorations.

With time-tested tips and complete information on everything from mixing colors to adjusting pan sizes, the Hansens explain all you need to know to get started. Whether you’re dreaming of an elegant Chocolate Apricot Pecan Torte or a three-tiered butter cake filled with spiked mocha cream and embellished with fantastical spring flowers, The Whimsical Bakehouse is the ultimate guide to creating delicious, showstopping confections that are completely original.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cool recipes and techniques
I bought this book based on the good reviews. I took a Wilton cake decorating class 17 years ago. I hadn't decorated a cake for years and started having interest again. I was mainly looking for recipes for good tasting frostings that I could color and frost cakes with. There are many recipes for frostings and cakes. I hadn't tried them yet but can't wait. The cake examples are very bright colors like the one on the cover. The colors are a bit too bright for my own taste, but I think kids would love them. The technique for making decorations out of chocolate are very cool. They look complicated, but the process is actually simple. I wished that there were pictures for each cake, though. This is a very good book to have as your cake decorating and recipe resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars New cake decorator ...this book is the BEST!
This book is wonderful. Its written by self-taught amateurs not professionals so they don't miss essential aspects of the instructions. They look at it from the same perspective of someone at home.

Also, the recipes are delicious, affordable and realistic. A lot of the books out there are all fondant cakes. While beautiful its not really affordable (or even tasty). This book teaches you to make beautiful cakes, with elaborate chocolate decorations. Its such a cool technique I haven't seen before and so simple. And the cakes will always be something delicious that kids will love. Unlike some of the more complicated elaborate cake books out there.

Can't wait to buy more whimsical bakehouse books.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite baking book
I bought this book because I wanted to bake delicious and beautiful cakes without using fondant or sugar paste. It has become my go-to book for all occasions and every cake I have made has been a hit with my family. The chocolate decorations take some practice but are unique and taste really good, too!!I have tried most of the recipes and each and every one is delicious, and I'm teaching my daughters to bake from this book.I may need to buy a 2nd copy because now everyone wants to borrow it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Book, great recipes
I am a seasoned baker and I love this book! These recipes and tips are great and so much fun!The book is well organized and has great pictures of the finished product! Also I emailed the author with a question and got a very nice response very quickly!

4-0 out of 5 stars wow
When I first received the book and flipped through the pages, I thought that this book was not what I really expected.I was looking for a more traditional looking decorated cakes, but I have tried some of the receipes and the family has wow!! at the cakes and the taste and flavor. Some of the designs I will not try, but the details of the instructions are right on. ... During the heyday of CBS News in the 1960s and 1970s, he was often cited as "the most trusted man in America" after being so named in an opinion poll. Although he reported many events from 1937 to 1981, including bombing in World War II, the Nuremberg trials, combat in the Vietnam War, the death of President John F. 4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating study
I learned of this book watching a "Booknotes" re-run on C-SPAN, and found Elsa Walsh's discussion intriguing enough to buy and read her book. While a longtime enthusiastic believer in the wisdom, strength and talents of women, but who also believes women and girls continue to be considered inferior or unworthy (in some cases by members of BOTH genders), I still found this book to be a fascinating study of how these women had to struggle to attain their full potential.I'm a man, but I know from my experience that countless women today are totally unaware of these kind of struggles by their sisters.I also have to wonder, based on periodic and recent observations, what women continue to experience today.I fear that things may not have improved all that much, and I'd like to see an updated version.
I bought copies for my daughters, all of whom were youngsters or not yet born when this book was written.

4-0 out of 5 stars Divided Lives, a view
I am still reading this book.Of course we have read and have in our library several of Bob Woodward's books, but this is the first time we became aware of his wife's talent.I like the book very much and what inspired me to order it was her interview on Book TV.It is very easy reading and amazing that her three women she settled on were so candid in their conversations to her.

3-0 out of 5 stars there are no answers here
While the book is well-written, there are no answers here. There are women who need to stick to their priorities and accept the tradeoffs that come with them (Meredith Viera) and who need to take a realistic look at the choices they've made (Rachael Worby). These are women having trouble making a career and family function despite having no real financial constraints, yet they still can't do it.I suppose this should make the rest of us feel better, but I found it quite depressing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Portrayal
I'm writing this review primarily to refute Milly's poor rating of this book. While I completely agree with her comments about Meredith and Rachel, I feel the author did an excellent jobportraying all the women for who they truly are. It is a relief to see that people who seem to have it all really are like the rest of us and struggle with the same issues we do. It is also wonderful to see the different ways these women deal with their issues, whether they do so in a healthy manner or not.

This book helped me realize my life isn't so bad and that I do ok dealing with my own issues. Thus, I recommend this to all working women as you are bound to benefit from it in one way or another.

5-0 out of 5 stars More stories like this are needed
I've read alot of magazines on women in the working world;but, none of them ever step thru the decision making process this well. These are people facing extremely tough challenges, usuallyalone (or with friends who are not actually in the same "trenches", but are looking at the challenge from afar.)

These are brave people, on their own - working thru challenges; How else will i learn about the challenges i have yet to face but through stories like this. I do not learn from tv or movies - nor from newspaper articles or magazines - i do not see these types of stories anywhere. There is room for them and there is a big need for them. Women with daughters should read this; women with a passion for their careers should also; women debating whether or not to have children at a later point in their life should read this.

It is written with tolerance for other opinions which so many stories and people today are lacking. It was really enjoyable... ... Read more
