5-0 out of 5 stars Detox For Life
This was a great book. I found the plan easy to follow since there was no measuring portions. I could eat until I was full. Even though I don't spend all of my life on this plan, I still use some of the recipes just because they taste so good!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Keeper
This book takes the guess work out of detoxing and the recipes are straighforward (and taste great, too!).We used a lot of the recipes after we had finished detoxing.Carol Vorderman is straight talking and personable. The book is easy to read, easy to follow and this is a book you'll go back to again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-changing Diet
This has got to be the best diet on earth. The recipes are simple and all dietary aspects and restrictions are explained well.I lost 14 pounds in a relatively easy few weeks.I have recommended this to every woman I know who wants to drop a dress size or two.As a benefit (or maybe this should be the main purpose) I felt healthy for the first time in years. If you buy only one diet book ever, make it this one. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding collection and outstanding lessons--for the intermediate puzzler.
For those beginners looking for more challenging puzzles and lessons, for intermediates who want more helpful tips and some step-by-step guides for the solving of puzzles, and for those who are anxious to try "squiffy sudoku," sometimes called "samurai sudoku" by other writers;sudoku 16, with squares of sixteen, not nine, boxes;and "killer sudoku," complex puzzles with grids and no numbers printed in, this is the perfect place to start.

The puzzles are printed on sturdy paper which survives erasures, and the boxes are large enough to accommodate many options.Vorderman's instructions are terrific--the clearest I've come across in any book I've found so far.She shows the whole puzzle so that the puzzler can see how a technique works relative to the whole puzzle, which many other writers do not do, and shetakes the puzzler, step-by-step through two complete puzzles, showing WHY a number MUST go where it does. One of the examples she uses is puzzle #200, the most difficult one from her original Master Sudoku book.

Unfortunately, those who are looking for truly "extreme" sudoku puzzles may be disappointed with this collection.None of the puzzles require advanced puzzle techniques, such as tracing unmatched pairs throughout a puzzle to fill in one number, and none even require something as basic as the "swordfish" to break through gridlocks. All of the puzzles in Vorderman's book can be solved by an intermediate puzzler who pays attention to the logic of the puzzles and fills in boxes by eliminating the obviously incorrect options.

Note:A collection which some fans of more extreme sudoku may enjoy is The Sudoku Addict's Workbook: 150 Brand-New Puzzles with Gridlock-Busting Tips and Techniques by Paul Stephens. The last thirty puzzles in that book, labeled "extreme," are, for the most part, truly extreme, requiring advanced strategies not covered in Vorderman's book.Tom Sheldon's Sudoku Master Class is also very challenging.nMary Whipple

4-0 out of 5 stars Not all that extreme
Carol Vorderman seems to be an excellent sudoku editor, in the sense that the puzzles she presents are usually interesting and fairly fit the stated category.Still, this book is on the easy edge of "extreme."It is an excellent book for someone reaching out to more difficult and tricky puzzles than the common "easy, medium, hard" categories. Those looking for puzzles requiring single-number solving and multiple worksheets should pass it by.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Solve the Tough Ones
If you have read Carol Vorderman's first book, MASTER SUDOKU, then you will be familiar with how she teaches. This volume picks up where the last one left off. What do you do when a puzzle is too hard and slicing and dicing just isn't getting you anywhere?Well, you could try the lessons in this book.

These lessons take you to new levels of puzzles.Carol clearly shows techniques for solving the hardest of puzzles. She does so in a clear and easy to understand manner. Each lesson is then followed by sample puzzles for the reader to practice their new skills upon.

But the book does not stop there. There is more to sudoku than just hard 9X9 grids. There are tougher variations and Carol takes the reader through some of the more popular variants and shows how to apply her techniques to them as well. You get squiffy puzzles where the 3X3 sub-grids have been replaced by other shapes.Sudoku 16 where the 9X9 grid has been replaced by a 16X16 grid. And then there is my favorite, killer sudoku, where the clues are given in the form of relationships between the answers.300 puzzles are included in this volume to make anyone a true sudoku master.

5-0 out of 5 stars The going gets tough
Another 300 puzzles from Carol Vorderman. This volume throws in some increasingly difficult 9x9 standard sudoku puzzles, together with several variations. As with her Massive Sudoku, you get 16x16 puzzles (using numbers, not letters) as well as the jigsaw sudoku variation she calls "Squiffy."The big add here are several of the variation known as "Killer Sudoku," which require some minor math to solve (as with the new Kakuro puzzles, clues are given as sums and you must deduce the number pattern from the sum provided, still following the other traditional Sudoku rules.)

Was that confusing? That, I suppose, is the value of the book - Vorderman provides solid instruction and very good solving tips for the new variations. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars New sudoku puzzle solvers will find this book very helpful.
I would really like to recommend this sudoku puzzle book to people who are still exploring the puzzles and learning how to solve them. The puzzles in this book do give you a way to travel through puzzles labeled easy, medium, difficult, and super-difficult.Vorderman provides the basic rules for how to solve the puzzles and then she gives more detailed instructions for how to recognize situations such as writing options, twins, and triplets. If you have picked up any puzzle magazine from a newsstand and have had difficulty in getting started, these helpful hints will be of value to you.Frankly, after working your way through a few puzzles these "tips" reveal themselves very naturally, without needing this book.If you are having trouble, then that's where this book will come in handy.

The book is arranged with one puzzle on each page so there is ample room for writing in numbers in blank squares if you need to do that. The flip side to this is that the book is so thick that the first half makes the puzzles on the left page hard to work on and the second half makes the puzzles on the right side of the page difficult to work on.I solve that problem by tearing the page out, working the puzzles and then throwing the sheet away.Do you really think you are going to want to keep solved sudoku puzzles? No, you will want to get a new, fresh supply. There is a space at the bottom of each puzzle to indicate the time it took you to solve the puzzle and a "score" you assign yourself based on how long it took you to solve. Some of the puzzles give the solving time of Carol Vorderman. This aspect of the book was of no value to me since I chose not to make the solving of my puzzles a race, against myself, the clock, or another solver.I don't enjoy the tension created by putting myself against the clock.

These puzzles, even the ones called super-difficult are much too easy for even moderately proficient sudoku solvers. When I can look at a super-difficult puzzle and pick out which number slots into a space instantly, it's just not a very difficult puzzle. When I first began to solve sudoku's these puzzles would have increased my proficiency and given my confidence a boost. Not now, however. There are puzzles in the back of the book which Vorderman calls "squffy" and the 16 number puzzles.I find that the "squiffy" puzzles are usually easier to solve than regular sudoku's and I just don't like the 16 number puzzles.A "squiffy" is a puzzle which still uses the basic 9 numbers but where the grids are not square but in various shapes. No matter what the shape is, the numbers 1 through 9 must still be placed and perfectly co-ordinate with other various shapes. It's much easier than it sounds, but some solvers find the unusual shapes a visual distraction and don't care to solve this type puzzle.

I am giving this book a three star rating because there are many people who will find this book a huge help in increasing their sudoku solving skills.Just don't think you will find anything new and useful here if you have already worked your way through basic to moderate puzzles.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best!!
This is the best sudoku book I have found.Whoever said only for beginners must be a total genius.I have worked on this book for a long time, maybe over a year now, and bring it whenever I go on a trip.I ran out of Mediums and did some Difficults and then I just went to some beginners ones to play around with and they were slightly enough challenging to keep me interested.

My only problem is what to replace this with as Carol has not come out with another one.

The only other thing is that it is a little big to carry in my bag on a trip and would like to get some smaller ones for trips.

But there seemed to be enough challenge with even the Easy ones and the Difficult ones are not so insanely difficult that you can't get them with a little work. The Mediums are just perfect, make you think and are challenging enough to be fun.

2-0 out of 5 stars For Beginners Only
If you're an absolute beginner to Sudoku this book might be a good start. There's a large quantity of puzzles progressing up through various difficulty levels, and some introductory Sudoku tips to get you started.

If you are not a beginner this book has little to offer. There are four grades of puzzles, but I can't imagine anyone of even modest skill wasting time on easy, medium, or "difficult" puzzles, all of which are the Sudoku equivalent of word searches (i.e., no logic involved). The "super difficult" puzzles are only moderately challenging at best, but there's no reason to carry around a book this large when you're only going to use 1/4 of it. The book attempts to add an additional challenge by including a time-based scoring system, but the time allotted is so ridiculously long, if you don't get the top score it's probably because you fell asleep.

On the plus side there are a couple of Sudoku variations like "Squiffy Sudoku," but there are only 20 total puzzles and there's no point in buying the entire book just for those.

If you're a beginner who wants a light diversion this might be a worthwhile book just because of the large number of puzzles included, but for everyone else there are better choices.

5-0 out of 5 stars I got this for my dad for Christmas, and he loves it.
My dad loves Sudoku puzzles.I got this for him for Christmas last year, and he is almost done with the entire book. He does about a puzzle or 2 a day, and the book has a place right next to his recliner. It made an excellent stocking stuffer. Now I am off to get him another one by Carol Vorderman since he liked this one so much.

3-0 out of 5 stars Who are you calling an international Sudoku Expert
The book is good, not too expencive, a lot of puzzles for everybody... But what's with the times? I timed about half the puzzles I did and I scored the highest amount of points easely every time, and then the "Carol's time" that shows up every ten puzzles or so. I beat 'Carol' every time too and SHE has the title "Sudoku Expert". I'm sorry, but that just bugs me. If you're gonna give categories of what's good and what's not yet so good, make categories that will push people to be better.
Sudoku makers don't realise that there are people who aren't beginners anymore...
Besides that, the book's pretty okay ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly addictive
About two months ago I bought my first Sudoku book, and I found it addictive and also highly challenging. Many Sudoku books only have puzzles, and only some have solving strategies.

I was somewhat familiar with Carol Vorderman, having watched her puzzle show Countdown when I lived in the UK.That show ran for 25 years, and she has the reputation of being one of the most intelligentwomen in the UK, with a reputed IQ of 152.

I thought I needed that kind of brainpower to help me unlock the mysteries of Sudoku. So I bought this because it did have strategies.First I solved a few puzzles without studying her strategies to get a baseline, and see how much adapting her strategies would improve my skills.I immediately was able to knock about 20 mintues off my best time.

Then once I completed the easy puzzles, I read her strategies for difficult puzzles before moving on.Again my times improved significantly. The naming of the strategies varies between different writers. What she calls slicing and dicing, another writer would call virtual crosshatching, and so forth.

The book contains 200 puzzles of different standards graded easy, medium, difficult, and super difficult. Each puzzle has graded times and points for you to contrast and compare your progress.I really like this idea.Additionally, all the puzzles are a good size, which means you don't have to make tiny markings in really small squares.

If you are en experienced and very good at Sudoku, I would not recommend this book, as you might not find all the puzzles challenging enough. You might enjoy, though seeing if you beat the recommended times.Personally, I like the idea of different standards of puzzles, as sometimes I might want to dash off a quick one.

I am thinking of buying this as a gift for some friends, and I would definitely recommend it to someone new to Sudoku. It's definitely addictive, and it's a great first book.I also bought her follow up book, Extreme Sudoku which has 400 puzzles, and also some Squiffy Sudoku, and Sudoku 16 which has 16 grids of 16 squares. As you might expect, it's tough.

If you want another strategy book I recommend Paul Stephens also called Mastering Sudoku Week by Week: 52 Steps to Becoming a Sudoku Wizard, which is mostly about strategy, and gets into all the high tech names such Xy wings, Nishio, forced choices and so forth. One of the benefits of doing Sudoku is that some other puzzles I work on have become much easier.Your mind is improved by being challenged. If you're like me, you will find it very addictive. It's nice to have someone with a genius IQ walk you through a puzzle or two, a genius standing at your shoulder, and genius like your puzzle mistakes does rub off.It hink you will love it, and hope this was helpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars book is a waste of time
I bought Master Sudoku based on glowing reviews but found it worthless in improving my sudoku skills. Basically, the author teaches you to count 1 to 9 and then repeats the lesson over and over. She did not classify different methods of solving sudoku nor did she mention any techniques by name as other Sudoky books do. There are some good books that help you improve Sudoku skills but this is not one of them. I wasted my money and my time by purchasing this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Great Book.Very easy to read. I learned the most about Sudoku from this book.Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the Novice
I had never done a sudoku puzzle so I bought this book and loved it.So much so that I'm now online to get my next Vorderman Sudoku book.

Her method takes you through 4 levels of difficulty explaining techniques for solving at each level and diagramming solutions as they are worked out.

She also has scores for the puzzles which adds a little spice. For example, if your time is less than X minutes you get Y points, etc.The harder the puzzles the longer you have to solve them, but the times are often pretty challenging.

Interestingly, I found that I trusted Carol to provide solvable puzzles. Some of the books I've picked up have puzzles that don't seem to be solvable - one of them even had wrong anwers in the back, i.e. the grid in the answers didn't match the grid given for the puzzle.

I recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn how to solve Sudoku puzzles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sudoku Book for All Levels
*****
This is a great sudoku book for all levels, but especially good for those who wish to increase their sudoku proficiency and MASTER sudoku. There are 200 puzzles, only one to a page, printed large enough for marking up. There are places to record your time, too, and you can accrue points based on how quickly you can do a puzzle. This is nice, because although I prefer difficult puzzles now, it's fun to go back and do an easy one faster and faster. There are different techniques involved in the different levels of puzzles and timing them makes them all continue to be challenging.

If you're a beginner, you can start out with the easy puzzles and work your way up. There are medium puzzles, too, as well as difficult and super-difficult. There is plenty of technique instruction, and there are many examples, so this could serve as a first book for adults. It was not my first sudoku book, but it is still one of my favorites, and I find myself going back to it again and again.

Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for teaching basic math concepts
I was homeschooled and used this book.It uses many creative ways to introduce many mathmatical concepts.I plan to use this book with my own children.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a fantastic summer occupation!!
"How Math Works" could be subtitled "How to keep your kids occupied for many hours this summer in a productive, educational, and fun way." Instead, the subtitle is "100 ways parents and kids can share the wonders of mathematics." Close. Either one will work.

I sat down with this book and went through every page, reading here and there, looking at the experiments. My very first thought was, No way could a typical kid create these experiments, much less complete them. But then after just a few pages, I decided, yes, they can with a little help here and there. If you (the adult) help a little, a lot of math will come back to you. This book is designed to be enjoyable for kid and adult alike.

For example, remember the Golden Mean, or special ratio in art and architecture, used in creating the perfect ratio "look" to the Parthenon and the Pyramid at Gizeh in Egypt? There is an experiment to learn just how the mean works. On the next page is an experiment to make the Golden Mean! How cool is that?!

Try using algebra to solve this puzzle: A friend said that on his birthday, his mother's age was three times his, but in 15 years, she would be twice as old as he. How old are the boy and his mother today?

There's a section on chances and probability. Did you learn those in school. Didn't think so. How about the various personal measuring systems used through the ages? Or how to economically wrap a package? In another chapter children will learn how to find true north, make a spirit level, create a leaning tower, use trigonometry to find the height of things, and create curves with straight lines.

They will learn about Nobel Prize winners in mathematics and create a double helix, create an envelope tetrahedron, make a flying machine, and study asymmetry using their own faces.

The last chapter concerns philosophy and logic. Two fabulous experiments involve making a paper logic chain and the other constructing the Tower of Hanoi. Have you ever seen those long flow charts where a steel ball travels along a mix-max of chutes and tunnels? Your kids can make one out of normal household products. The last activity is testing the chaos theory, which deals with dynamics or changes within a system.

I skipped the beginning, so let's go back. The first chapter shows what tools are needed for the entire book--all simple, easily obtainable items.
The history of numbers, major mathematicians, and enough games, puzzles, and tricks in this book will enable your child to have enough things to do for a very long time, or at least until the end of summer.

Meanwhile, the book is so mixed with visuals, facts, diagrams, information, and experiments, that it is highly likely for this book to create a supreme interest in mathematics. I'm personally allergic to math, but I think I want a copy of this book for myself. I suggest every parent who loves to work with their children and, indeed, every elementary teacher who provides instruction in math must own a copy! This is a must-have book!

5-0 out of 5 stars It gave my kids an advantage on understanding Math
This is a great math tool that I have sitting on my shelf and it has helped my kids do wonderful in math. I would additionally like to share this site http://thecyberprofessor.com/ which gave me the insight into know mathematical sciences as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent addition to any homeschooler's math program
This is simply the best math "activity" book out there! Well worth every dollar! Kids need help with many activities, but it is well worth the parent's time. The activities are not only educational but really FUN and engaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite
As a writer of educational materials, I have dozens of books like this on my reference shelf. Each has a different advantage, but HOW MATH WORKS is the best overall. It is full of fascinating information, easy-to-do experiments (yes, experiments!), and the clearest explanations of complex concepts I have seen. The full color layout is clean and appealing. The organizational features mentioned in other reviews are excellent. Highly recommended for teachers, parents, and others who work with students in grades 3-5. ... Read more

Product Description
International Sudoku expert and bestselling author Carol Vorderman brings her proven and addictive mental workouts to anyone seeking a sharper memory and better concentration skills.

"In childhood and the early years of our adult lives we have information pumped into our brain whether we like it or not and then ... nothing. After formal education and work-related training the brain is left to get on with it and is largely ignored. For much of our lives our brains operate as if on autopilot, thinking and reacting in the same way, even if this isn't getting us what we want. This book can change all that."
—Carol Vorderman, Super Brain

Do you find it hard to put names to faces? Does your mind wander? Do you often lose focus and feel less productive in the afternoon? Do you struggle with simple math? Or walk into a room having forgotten what you meant to do there? You are not alone—and SUPER BRAIN can help. Like the rest of your body, your brain responds to a good workout. Yet few of us take time for mental gymnastics.

Your brain is a stupendous living thing, able to repair itself and to create new pathways of thought and memory. The more you stimulate and exercise your mind by trying out different ways of thinking, the better your powers of concentration, memory, creativity and overall mental agility will become, and remain, regardless of age and natural abilities. But if you don't use it, you lose it. Your brain needs looking after.

Carol Vorderman has degree in Engineering from Cambridge and she has been honored with an MBE for her outstanding contributions to British society. She is one of the most famous women on British television and her bestselling Sudoku puzzle books are proof that we're all eager to reclaim our gray matter and have a good time doing it. SUPER BRAIN is a brain fitness handbook that makes memory training fun, and it incorporates exercises and lifestyle tips, foods, strategies, and habits that will best support a strong, healthy mind. It's not just about improving memory, concentration, and problem-solving abilities-- it's about enhancing all aspects of your mind and changing your life for the better. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Super Brain: 101 Easy ways to a More Agile Mind.
Poor format of book and hard to follow. Some of the exercises were rediculous and somewhat childish! I would not recommend it to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars A brain gym is even better
For everyone who cares about their brain health, this book is very good. Mental fitness is essential to sustaining an active, clear mind. Many people do not realize that working out your brain is just as beneficial as going to the gym. This book really highlights the importance of doing mental exercises.

I personally find it easier to do brain exercises online and I joined a service called [...], which provides fun brain exercises and interesting articles. And, my mental clarity and sharpness continues to get better each day. The key to longevity is mental fitness, and if you ask me - we all need to put our brain on the treadmill!
