pleasure principle

faithful transcription of the album
The scariest thing about buying a songbook is wondering how well it matches the actual music - beginners don't want anything too complex, but serious musicians want the legitimate scores. Personally, I was very pleased to find that this songbook matched exactly what was on the album, but it isn't unapproachable for beginners.

A lot of the songs really aren't that hard to figure out, and so if you have a decent ear you might not have much of a use for this book. It is helpful for the trickier bits though, on songs like Take It With Me and Black Market Baby, and the chords are always dead on if you just feel like being lazy. Also, as anyone who has studied Tom's piano playing knows, there are a lot of songs in less common keys (like Eb, Db, Ab, etc.). Most songbooks seem to cater to guitar players by charting the chords in capo'd format, which is damn obnoxious to piano players, or else to piano players by using the proper chords, which is damn obnoxious to guitar players. This book, however, utilises both the proper chords and capo'd chords ( A7 / Bb7 for instance), which is helpful for playing together with a few friends.

There is no tablature here, so don't go looking for guitar solos or fills. And songs like Cold Water take a little experience and intuition to get right. Some music is so outdated that it will be difficult for beginners to play, but it's not because anything is lacking from the book. Overall I would definitely recommend getting this if you have been considering it, no matter your skill level. Some songs will be very easy (like Hold On or Picture In A Frame) but others will be a real [...] if you don't have much experience.

More a Pamplet than a Book
Don't but this little book! It has less information than most of the magizine articles that are the basis of the author's knowledge base.It is unclear if the author has ever meet,interviewed or seen Mr. Waits preform.Huge omissions and years of information are not present.Some facts like the fact Tom had a relationship with Ricky Lee Jones or the first 3 albums for Island are a "Trilogy" are mentioned numerous times in a attempt to pad this books 150 double spaced pages.It looks and reads like a bad high school term paper.

nothing i couldn't get from his discography
this book was a major disappointment.i picked it up hoping to learn a little about tom waits motivations and approach to music making.instead i got a very dry and shallow biography seemingly written based almost singularly on tom waits' discography.there's nothing revealing in this book, just an album by album recollection.it's a decent reference if you want to know about all of waits' works, but then again you can find a lot more of this sort of information on the web.the padding in this biography is snippets gleemed from interviews.

Not the definitive Bio but it will do for now
This is a small book in every sense of the word but amazingly is well researched and packs in a lot of fact and fiction (mostly generated by Tom himself!)about the bard of low-down losers of everytown skidrows. This is not the definitive bio of the still the most underrated songwriter in America but it will do for now. I read it one sitting but I might go back to it again. over looked the condition
i was looking for a gift for my girl, and she is a big fan of mr. wait's, so i thought interviews would giver her insight to her inspiration. the description said "good" and so i took a chance on the used item.

when i recieved it i was really upset, its the first birthday spending with my girl and i wanted it to be special, instead i get this cd...and honest to god it looked like it was left out in the rain and then left on a dirty dinning table. it was wrinkled(it had a sleave that the cd came in) and it was dirty. i had to wipe it clean and fix it up...the only reason i didnt send it back was because i knew she would appreciate the vintage look.
