5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for short stories
Shadow of the moon - Sherrilyn Kenyon
THE STORY - Angelia is out to protect her pack from Fury Kattalakis. Fury is part of the DARK-HUNTER books, he is brother to Vane and Fang. Angelia sets out to kill Fury, but he flips the table and hunts her. Will they kill each other or work together to solve their dilemma?
THOUGHTS - Just like all the other DH books, this was fantastic. I really like Fury and his brothers. Fury is a great character. Angelia is fierce and sweet all in one. They complement each other well.Other DH characters are out to play in this short story. My only complaint is that it was too short. That's the problem I have with anthologies though.

The story of Son - JR Ward
THE STORY - Claire is a hard core lawyer. She has always been more interested in her career then men. On a routine will revision Claire is drugged and introduced to the client's son. HE is kept chained in the basement. He has no name; Claire wants nothing more to free this beautiful man. She plays a dangerous game and together they learn the sensual chemistry they have together.
THOUGHTS - I really liked this book. You feel the emotion they go through. It is a fast paced original story. I can't decide which I like more this story or Kenyon's. They're great in their own way.

Beyond the night - Susan Squires
THE STORY - Drew Carlowe returns to his home town after 14 years to seek out the girl he left behind. What he finds instead is the house he purchased has a ghost. Only the ghost isn't so ghost like.
THOUGHTS - This is prolly my least favorite story, but it wasn't bad. Just different. The pace is okay. Drew has to grow up in this story, but he finds what he is looking for in the end - his other half.

Midnight Kiss Goodnight - Dianne Love
THE STORY - Try McCree has always been in love with Sasha. He had to leave her many years ago to accept his destiny. Now they come face to face they are both after the same bad guy, for different reasons. They must work together to defeat him, but can they stay professional?
THOUGHTS - This was my first Dianne Love story, but now I have to look up her works. I loved her writing style and the plot/story. The pace was good, I liked the characters. It was just a outstanding short story.

4-0 out of 5 stars 3 pretty good shorts, 1 pretty bad (IMO)
1. Shadow of the Moon by S. Kenyon.Any fan of Kenyon's will know Fury, the wolf brother of Vane from Night Play. Here he finds his mate, and he had, as promised by Acheron, "already met her".I loved Fury, but Angelia was one of my least favorite Kenyon heroines. But it was pretty good and worth the read.Plus you get to see a little of some of your other favorite characters.(Side note on Kenyon's Dark Hunter series, which I started from the beginning after reading this short. It's a series I mostly enjoyed; however, it is quite formulaic. I stopped after Acheron (the 13th book), the first half of which made me ill due to the amount of abuse and molestation suffered by the character. But all in all, it is a good series of inter-related characters and romances, and I have recommended them to other fantasy fans. I also tell them where I stopped and advise not to read too many in a row.)
2. The Story of Son by J.R. Ward.I've never read any other Ward stories or books, but I really enjoyed this short, and it makes me want to read more by this author. The heroine was modern, smart and kick ass in her own way (she actually reminded me of a friend, also an attorney). The hero had a wounded past, but was a kind-hearted character.A bit unbelievable that he didn't have any bitterness, but then again, he was terribly insecure and there wouldn't have been much time to successfully negate such bitterness in a short story.
3. Beyond the Night by S. Squires. Also an author I'm not familiar with, but I liked the story. The idea that female vampires are used as sexual energy trainers to help male vampires harness their powers was not appealing to me though (so I probably won't bother looking at this author's books). But with that aspect removed, the story had nice romance elements as well as some decent sex scenes.
4. Midnight Kiss Goodbye by D. Love.I did not like this story at all, nor did I care about the characters.I will not bother looking for more from this author.Maybe it was just a bad short and she's good normally, but I've "discovered" some of my favorite authors by reading one of their shorts.Authors should really be careful when submitting a short for submission.I know many other readers like myself who use these as samples and base our next series reads on them.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only "Story of Son" worth 5 Stars
JR Ward's "Story of Son" made this book - and is worth 5 stars. The others were just okay and nothing I would want to read again and are only worth 3 stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars A MIXED BAG WITH A HIT FOR WARD FANS
DEAD AFTER DARK contains 4 paranormal romance stories, with two from a couple of heavy weight authors in the genre. As it turned out this anthology was hard for me to rate because the stories varied from 5 big stars to, okay somewhat sexy read to, couldn't wrap my head around and didn't finish. I would definitely recommend this to fans of JR Ward though, her contribution was excellent and by far the most complete as a stand alone short story. (I also have a feeling we haven't seen the last of Michael.) I'm sure Kenyon's fans will appreciate her story however for myself, without any knowledge of her long running series and world `rules' I was completely lost. Also enjoyable was the historical romance by Susan Squires, who transported me to another time and gave a different twist to the vampire genre.

Never having read anything by Sherrilyn Kenyon before (I know, I know she's on the TBR shelf) I was a little surprised by her contribution SHADOW OF THE MOON. I guess I expected to be instantly blown away because Kenyon's so popular, instead I struggled through a couple of very confusing chapters from a story that I still have no idea what it was all about. Kenyon obviously knows how to write the addictive alpha male but even a sexy shape shifter named Fury wasn't enough to hole my interest here and I just couldn't finish. Sadly this was a bad introduction to Kenyon's work and I would have thought for an anthology she might have submitted a story more user friendly (or explained her world a bit more) in the hopes of gaining not excluding new readers. DNF 1 star

I have to admit that I bought this book exclusively for Ward's STORY OF SON and even though its only 90 pages long was worth the price of admission alone. This is a fantastic story that I became completely engrossed in within a couple of pages. Encompassing suspense, drama, heartache, romance and OH MY the love scenes were sexy as hell. No wonder theres such a huge following for Michael and Claire. It's also complete in terms of a world anyone can understand and has a conclusive ending, albeit slightly sweet. Obviously I saw the beginning of the BDB here as it takes place in the same Vampire world. In particular a little story arc that's very similar to V's story (Lover Unbound) But I won't tell you why because that's a major heartbreaking spoiler that I didn`t see coming either time. Loved it 5 big stars.

Susan Squires was a new author for me and I really enjoyed her historical in SEIZE THE NIGHT. 1800's England is captured perfectly here with the story of a man returning home after 15 long years, having made his fortune he hopes to win back his lost love. Scoffing at the rumours that his newly purchased estate may be haunted by a blood drinking ghost until a passionate encounter leaves some very real marks on his neck and a yearning in his soul. I will definitely be searching out more from this author. 4 stars

The last story, Diana Love's MIDNIGHT KISS GOODBYE was unfortunately another one I couldn't get into and ultimately just skimmed. A contemporary supernatural romance with a reunited lovers theme and a Hindu god named Ekkbar who keeps possessing the heroes love interest. For whatever reason this just didn't do it for me. 2 stars

Product Description
These daily affirmations are for those of us who have problems with food--either because we eat too much or because we eat too little. Unlike those who have problems with drugs or alcohol, we cannot just cut food out of our lives, instead we must learn to live in harmony with it and with the body that nature has given us.

As we live day by day we learn, with the help of these affirmations, to accept ourselves and our problems with food. We reach for the serenity of knowing that we do not have to measure up to others' expectations of weight, height or body type. In doing so we can free ourselves from the hold that food and eating have had on us.

These daily affirmations are written to encourage you to follow your own path toward the many possibilities that are open to you. They have been written after years of experience working with those who have problems with compulsive eating, in the hope that what has worked for them will also work for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual sustenance that resonates for a long while afterwards...
I am writing this review because I disagree wholeheartedly with two negative reviews listed here. I agree with one of the reviewers who wrote negatively about this book that the twelve-step program is not the way to deal with weight awareness, and it is true that this book does pull from that program. But the dipping that the author does is terrific, and I have been consistently surprised and uplifted by the quality of her daily writings here. Her urging to go way beyond mere dieting and her comments that make you think and explore the psychological reasons, restraints, and pressures that occur when one overeats only helps towards her goal which I think is this: Enjoying food, and finding out how to give it the proper place in your life. If you are a compulsive eater who wants to delight in eating but "eat to live" rather than "live to eat," I think this book is fabulous and terrific. I have shown it to several friends of mine who also have had compulsive issues with food and after reading several passages, they all wanted to buy the book. Plus, it's great to be able to read a short passage whenever one wants. Obviously, you can read a great passage from another day on a different calendar date. I find the bite-sized passages (pun intended!) just the right amount when I need help. I recommend this book for anyone of whatever size they are who has had issues with weight management and feeling happy about one's body. An ace book, five stars all the way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Daily Affirmations can be very helpful in recovery
I personally bought this book many years ago. I stilluse it to today. I also recommend this to anyone who is struggling with food issues. Its QUICK & DAILY positive readings set the tone for your day and can help you focus onthe positive. I highly recommend this to many of my patients also.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay away unless you are a 12 step program member
I found the meditations to be stilted and poorly written. They are so heavily laden with 12 step language that only a committed member of OA would be comfortable with it. The 12 steps are not the only way to go, and in fact are quite likely NOT the best way.

5-0 out of 5 stars a compulsive overeater's best morning friend...
I bought one copy of this book five years ago, then ordered an entire case from the publisher... to give to my friends who struggle with a compulsive eating disorder, too.Susan Ward, thank you for writing with suchacceptance, such insight, such good sense, and such restraint. Each entryhelps me toward honesty, humility, and hope; each day I sit on the throneand regain my sense of self and hope in my own ability to recover. No realreligious stuff, but gentle, healthy, spirited, friendly words.Buy it,then buy lots more and give them away!nancy ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A look at the faith and everyday lives of ordinary Mormons
Mormons often lead lives that are a little different from those oftheir non-Mormon neighbors.By tracing the activities of one congregation in Maryland for 1 year, the author gives us a look at the livesof everyday Mormons. Set against the events of the congregation, many members of this ward tell us about their beliefs in and doubts about Mormonism, and the place the church has in their lives and relationships. This is the best book I have read to understand what it is like to live as a Mormon in contemporary America. The authorhas honestly and openly chronicled the joys and frustrations, the faith and the doubts, the rewards and difficulties of these members of the Mormon church.

I found this book fascinatng, although now and then I felt like a voyeur into the lives of these people because they were so open about their feelings. ... Read more

HINDRANCES TO CONGREGATIONALISM. IN reviewing the history of the oldest American Congregational Church of New York City, the first fact that confronts us is the lamentable weakness of Congregationalism, west of New England, during the first half of the nineteenth century. Not only was it generally conceded that Congregationalism could not prosper outside of New England, but so unpopular was our church polity that when, in 1840, the plan was broached of reorganizing, upon a Congregational basis, the disbanded church that had borne the name of the Broadway Tabernacle, the statement was publicly made that not ten respectable families could be found in New York that would attend a Congregational church. To account for this weakness and unpopularity it will be necessary to recall certain differing phases of Congregationalism in Massachusetts and Connecticut, and certain events in the history of Congregationalism beyond the limits of the Eastern States. The early settlers of Plymouth were Separatists, and the first Puritans of Massachusetts, though of the reform party within the Church of England before leaving their nativeshores, inevitably became Separatists when they had established themselves in the New World. The Pilgrims had their church organization before leaving Holland; Elder Brewster went with them, and they expected their pasto... ...
