Product Description
For thirty years the "Gilligan's Island" television show has reached generations through syndication making it one of history's highest-rated shows, and for thirty years Mary Ann has tempted us with her island delicacies. Now, Dawn Wells, the actress and real life Mary Ann, has come out with Mary Ann's Gilligan's Island Cookbook. "This book is more than a collection of recipes. It's a trip back to the pop culture of the 1960s," says the Milwaukee Journal.

Mary Ann's Gilligan's Island Cookbook is a compilation of recipes collected over the years by Dawn Wells (Mary Ann), several recipes contributed by her fellow cast members, as well as "an entertaining melange of trivia and inside stuff," says the Youngstown Vindicator. The recipes from Mary Ann's Cookbook will tantalize the most fickle castaway, "but the real treats are the memories and anecdotes Wells has stirred into the book's pages," says the Atlanta Constitution. So whether your looking for a tropical delight or just want to be delighted by past memories, check out Mary Ann's Gilligan's Island Cookbook. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Betty Crocker!
Viewers, I know Betty Crocker Cookbook has been around for a very long time; long before I knew how to say Betty Crocker, but when I first discovered MaryAnn's Cookbook, I was living in Cali, and I had to order the Cookbook thru a major Bookstore. Upon reciept of the Cookbook, I started with the Meatloaf by the Professor...It is the best I've ever had; now don't get me wrong I do enjoy making meatloaf the ole fashion way, but that recipe will leave you coming back for more. So I relocated to the South, and left my Cookbook with a relative to use, unfortunately, I never got it back, so I contacted every Bookstore in this town, and everyone is sold out, or can't order the Cookbook. So, I saw on the Amazon.com that I could order the Cookbook, and I've always been reluctant about putting my CC number online, so I sent a MO in to the address listed on Amazon, and to no avail, my MO was lost in the shuffle, I went belistic, so I am now forced to put my CC online in order to get the Maryann Cookbook, and I will tell each and everyone out there, if you've tried the rest, then you MUST try Maryann Cookbook, it is the BEST. It's worth losing the money from the MO and having to go another route to get my Maryann Cookbook. God only knows, I wish I could have ordered the Cookbook from Maryann herself, then I know I would have long recieved my Cookbook by now. Again its worth it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dawn Wells and MaryAnn Summers Together
Not only does this book have some great recipes, but Dawn has done a masterful job of both blending and separatingthe fictional characters of Mary Ann and the real- life Dawn Wells through the various anecdotes thatare sprinkled throughout the book.A must have for every Dawn Wells fan. ... In the cold nights of the Blitz, her music warmed their hearts...September 1940, Islington. The Blitz is taking its toll on Beth Shanks and her family. Beth works as a munitions worker at a factory in North Finchley and dodges falling shrapnel on her way to work. Her younger brother Phil is a teenage cyclist messenger in the Auxiliary Fire Service and he's been twice dug out of rubble as he carried important messages. Beth's father is away fighting and her mother Connie teaches piano lessons to children who've escaped evacuation. Connie despairs that Beth won't learn how to play the piano properly and will only play popular songs by ear, but when she hears Beth playing the piano to lift the spirits of local people trapped in an air raid, she realises there is much more to music than she ever realised. ... Product Description
Marva Dawn has an insider's view of the many spiritual, intellectual, emotional, social, and physical difficulties encountered by people with chronic illness and disabilities. She knows from experience how to nurture wholeness and hope in spite of infirmity.

Filled with insight and practical help, each chapter of Being Well when We're Ill focuses on one particular kind of struggle such as worry, guilt, the loss of meaning, or the loss of confidence and trust that God is present and personally loving. Each chapter details one or more appropriate 'finds' - spiritual resources, emotional supports, intellectual answers, or practical solutions - that enable a person with infirmities to persevere through them and to be well in spite of them.

For each issue she explores, such as loss of dreams, loneliness, physical pain, depression, ingratitude, side effects and more, Dawn includes discussions of biblical texts - not only texts that help lament losses but texts that bring wholeness. Readers will find themselves companioned in their sufferings and encouraged with new ways to surmount them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book by a favorite Christian author!

The book is both encouraging and faith-building. She is a leading Lutheran theologian, but her books are written to convey her excellent understanding of God and Scripture and pain for the lay Christian in a very readable style. I have read several other books on Christian understanding of and dealing with chronic pain, but this is easlly the best. Own it, read it, re-read it. She has multiple serious infirmities, aso she does not just deal with the problem of pain and illness theoretically.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding work from the heart
I had the wonderful opportunity to hear Marva Dawn speak two years ago and was inspired to purchase her book and began to follow her lifestyle. I have suffered from extreme myopia all my life and felt that somehow it was my fault. I was embarrassed that I could not see or do what other people could do. As I watched Marva give her presentation I was so inspired. Her physical limitations with slight, hearing, and mobility, did not prevent her from communicating a tremendous message to me and the other persons present.
After reading her book I'm convinced that it is a must-read for anyone who suffers with limitations and disabilities or works with individuals whose lives have been affected by these limitations.
I was inspired!
My life was transformed!
Thank you Marva.

4-0 out of 5 stars living faithfully with a disability
This book helps us live in the here and now with faith and one or more disabilities. The book is both practical and inspiring.as a Christian with disabilities she realistically explores the impact of disability and chronic illnesses on the life of faith and encourages to take the difficulties of life to our always loving God.A must read for those the church denies access to God because of their disabilities or illness.

5-0 out of 5 stars NBrown
I feel as if I have a new friend in Marva Dawn. I have been struggling with chronic pain and illness for seven years. This is extremely challenging to me in so many ways including my faith life. This book brought me renewed faith and hope as I read the author's story and how she has lived out her own challenges. She brings truth to the lies we sometimes believe about ourselves and concrete ideas for spiritual "practices" (I like that term also) for individuals to consider. Her theological discussions about topics such as retribution helped me to find clarity in my own views. Her use of scripture and prayers throughout helped to make reading a devotional experience. I highly recommend this book. Thank you Marva. ... Read more

Product Description
Conveyed with a mixture of lyrical prose and chilling honesty, The Dry Well is the story of a single mother traumatized by an incident that takes place while her son is away for the summer.

What begins as an ordinary workday morning fueled by several cups of coffee, prayers for a rewarding career and the end of generic products lining her shelves, progresses into a life-altering afternoon with devastating consequences. In the aftermath Julia suffers severe mental anguish, distorting perceptions, and wreaking further havoc on her life. She tries everything in her power to advance the healing process before her son’s homecoming, but isn’t successful. What kind of environment will her son return home to?

Usually Julia turns to her best friend Benjamin for support, but even their relationship seems strained. As a single, gay parent Benjamin has problems of his own. His bond with his son becomes less palpable every day. Julia and Benjamin want to support one another just as they always have, but the constant stress they live under touches every aspect of their lives. Is it time to end their long-standing association?

The core of the story is friendship and personal growth. The resiliency of the human spirit is confirmed, and hope restored. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars scary
You can tell a new writer..normally. Ms. Lyons has definatley captured the esence of a novice writer. It is a very gripping story and the fact that it is true and could happen in broad daylight in a busy parking lot, is just sickening, but unfortunatly it happens. I think Ms. Lyons has successfully and creatively made you feel the pain as she is feeling it, along with the frustration and suffering she goes though as she struggles through everyday.
I do not hesitate in recommending this book and can't wait for her next one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Compelling and poignant
The Dry Well was a real surprise to me. I liked very much that it wasn't like a crime scene investigation novel. It delves into the life of the main character and really gives the reader a glimpse of what the ramifications of personal trauma feel like, and it shows the character's growth through the process of recovering. A good read!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A haunting journey through trauma and recovery
Half of author Dawn Lyon's proceeds from the sales of The Dry Well will be used to help rape victims -- an additional reason to pick up and read The Dry Well, alongside its poignant characterization and haunting journey through trauma and recovery. A single mother suffers unspeakable harm when her son is away from the summer, and repercussions cause her mental anguish and delusions, threatening to destroy her life. A powerful and compelling narrative, The Dry Well is to be commended for its emphasis of the power of hope and strength within each us.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vivid Descriptions. Powerful.Sad, yet funny.
The Dry Well was an easy read. By this I don't mean it wasn't well written, but that the writing is clear and concise, the message clear. Since I knew ahead of time it's based on tragic circumstance, the humor was a big surpise. The author has a great sense of timing--seems to sense when comic relief is needed to lighten the story. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes getting emotionally involved with the characters and enjoys lyrical, yet powerful writing. ... Read more

Product Description
In the early 1990s, Russian President Boris Yeltsin revealed that for the previous thirty years the Soviet Union had dumped vast amounts of dangerous radioactive waste into rivers and seas in blatant violation of international agreements. The disclosure caused outrage throughout the Western world, particularly since officials from the Soviet Union had denounced environmental pollution by the United States and Britain throughout the cold war.

Poison in the Well provides a balanced look at the policy decisions, scientific conflicts, public relations strategies, and the myriad mishaps and subsequent cover-ups that were born out of the dilemma of where to house deadly nuclear materials. Why did scientists and politicians choose the sea for waste disposal? How did negotiations about the uses of the sea change the way scientists, government officials, and ultimately the lay public envisioned the oceans? Jacob Darwin Hamblin traces the development of the issue in Western countries from the end of World War II to the blossoming of the environmental movement in the early 1970s.

This is an important book for students and scholars in the history of science who want to explore a striking case study of the conflicts that so often occur at the intersection of science, politics, and international diplomacy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars God Help Us All
Having grown up in the span of time covered in this book,(and not paying much attention), I found myself often aghast at the waste disposal practices and the decisions made by the corporate "they" who determine our fate.Green devotees will be appalled to learn the global history of cavalier dumping of toxic waste into our waterways. This is not a sensational expose, but rather a well researched, extremely well-written illumination of what was going on with regard to radioactive waste in the beginning years of our modern nuclear age.It should be required reading for all environmental studies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Game Over
Unequivocally, the most depressing book on Amazon. The most damning critique of industrialization. How anyone could have been stupid enough to dump tons of nuclear waste into the Baltic and waterways emptying into the Atlantic has got to be the terminal rhetorical question we will never live to answer.I feel sick simply looking at this heavily documented tome. Yes. This mess really did happen. Who can help us? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good read!
In 7 Simple Steps to a Healthier You, writer Dawn Hall offers the reader a quick and simple guide for living a healthier, more balanced life. With heart, empathy and encouragement, she challenges us to stop making excuses to avoid exercising, eating right, taking time for ourselves, and spiritual reflection. And then she invites us to join her in discovering a healthier, more balanced life.

This book is the result of the author's own personal journey of being "born a weight watcher" and the "largest in her class" to mastering her challenge to stay healthy while leading an active, busy life. In 7 Simple Steps, Hall shares our concerns that it is not easy to live a healthy life and ignore all the excuses that ring out in our heads and sabotage our hard work.

Hall provides, instead, easy-to-manage strategies to shape our thinking and choices for a lifetime rather than just a short-term weight reducing diet. She encourages a comprehensive, lifetime approach that includes visualizing a satisfied life, introspection to understand what gets in the way of living healthy, and prayer to achieve lasting results.

In Step One, we begin on the roadmap for success with a thought-provoking question. "Was there a point in time when you stopped caring for yourself?" Through the next six steps, Hall invites us care for ourselves more and change our relationship with food, eat intentionally by keeping it smart and simple, exercise, de-clutter our life, get spiritually fit, and commit to a new lifestyle.

To help the reader reinforce these concepts, Hall provides a template for building a "Personal Plan for a Healthier Me." Through self-reflection and committing thoughts and intentions to paper, the reader ends up with their own, customized Plan.

What distinguishes this book from other diet books or self-help books is the author's own journey and what seems to be her sincere desire to broaden the definition of overall health--not just be focused on losing weight. It is about changing our perspective in order to change long-held habits with intention.

Armchair Interviews says: The power in this book comes from its simplicity and understanding of women and their conflicting priorities and roles. What is obvious is that Hall "gets it" and that it takes more than good intentions or willpower. The measure of a truly healthy life comes from how you feel physically, spiritually and emotionally.
