3-0 out of 5 stars A Pride of Place
As a board member of the Fauquier Historical Society I requested this sore of book to be undertaken .With a job of this under taking some homes may have to be left out of the book (none should have been ) .Not as much of a homes history was included as should have been ,there was a lot of wasted space on each page. While working in the Fauquier Heritage Society some of the homes and places people wanted to do research on wasn't avaialble . I take my hat off for Bob Baron for doing the book and making it as complete as he did. If you have an ancestial home in Fauquier look here and the W.P.A. Records for Fauquier.

4-0 out of 5 stars Both excellent and alarming
What Calder Loth does for the entire state of Virginia in the Virginia Landmarks Register, Williams does for Fauquier county in this impressive book.

The book is a complete survey of important rural houses in Fauquier county. It is NOT a complete architectural survey because it intentionally excludes the towns from the catalog.

It is exceptionally well done, with a superb introductory essay by Loth himself followed by a catalog of houses dating from 1760 to the early 20th century. This book gets your attention in several ways.First, it fills a gap in the state survey by elevating the importance of Fauquier county.Second, it's physically attractive - a nice big hardback, skillfully published by the University of Virginia.Perhaps most important, however, is this:The book strikes you with the alarming state of deterioration many of these sites have fallen into. Many of the photographs are dated, but even the modern ones reveal a rural landscape largely neglected by the gentrified cash flow of renovation.

Fauquier county is a bit of an odd-ball in Virginia. It's too far south and east to have been an important settling place for Germans moving out of Pennsylvania down into the Valley of Virginia. It's too far west and north to have fallen into the sphere of English-bound tidewater wealth.Fauquier falls into something of a colonial and Federal no man's land.Settlement didn't really pick up steam until well after the Revolution. The reader can easily detect this in the style and relative scarcity of its colonial and early Federal architecture.

Other than the very northern edge, which blends into southern Loudon county, Fauquier has been largely neglected by architectural historians. One quick glance at Loth's Register and Wilson's Buildings of Virginia will support this claim. There's very little beyond Warrenton (and perhaps Upperville) that interests these scholars.Williams has lovingly filled in the gap, but the number of important sites in Fauquier county that have been lost to neglect, fire, demolition and development leaves the reader shocked. Some of the oldest houses in the catalog have since been lost to fire and demolition, if you can believe it.

Virginians have been content to let Loudon serve as the museum piece while Fauquier deteriorates. This book does the most to record and correct that trend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Written and Excellently Illustrated and accurate
This is a must have for any owner of a home built in Fauquier county in the 18th or early 19th century. It is also appealing to general historians and residents of the county and of Virginia.

While I was disappointed that my 150 year old home was not listed or its carpenter discussed (he was after all a Yankee transplant after the war between the states) the historical information was fascinating and is a very good reference for both County history and Architecture. ... Read more

Product Description
Socially Constructed School Violence: Lessons from the Field argues that the way we understand what constitutes violence is socially constructed, and that people from different social locations, that is, gender, race, social class, geographic location, and so on, will have varied perspectives on what is violent. Based on ethnographic work at an urban alternative school for students expelled for bringing weapons to school and an affluent suburban school eighteen miles away, this book describes various ways violence can be constructed. Specifically, this book discusses personal and structural forms of violence that students, teachers, administrators, and other school staff encounter. Using powerful examples from the ethnographic analysis, this book describes some of the valuable lessons learned about how we can work to prevent school violence. ... Read more

Williams offers a concise look at violence, its causes, and possible solutions.I am teacher of middle and high school writing teachers, and I sponsor an annual "peace" writing competition for college freshmen. The Peace Approach to Violence Prevention provides real insight into what teachers and the culture are up against and makes practical suggestions for finding solutions. My interest is in finding ways to use writing, in and out of school, to promote peaceful resolution, and I find a good deal in this work that will help me.I'm surprised that I'm the first to review Williams' book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to teach the power of prayer
My daughter (4) received this book as a gift and we both love it.It is a great story about the power of prayer. She wanted to make our own prayer chain, as suggested at the end of the story, right away.

Though we didn't start right away, we do now have our own prayer chain. We have a little notebook where we write down the things we want to pray for, when we started praying for it and when it was (or wasn't) answered. And when we have an answered prayer (we've had almost 30 in 4 months) we write it down on a piece of paper along with the date answered, decorate it and then add it as a link in our "prayer chain".It hangs on the wall in our kitchen. It is beautiful to have a visible reminder of God working in our lives. And it also makes a good starting point for the discussion of why sometimes God doesn't answer our prayers; that God knows and sees much more than us and He will always do what is best even if we don't understand it.

Because of this book and the prayer chain we've implemented, my daughter and I are closer to each other and closer to God.I have already bought a few as presents for my friends' children.I highly recommend this book!

Product Description
One of the most influential American interior designers of the twentieth century, Naomi Leff is best known as the creator of the flagship Ralph Lauren store in Manhattan. There she established the brand image, combining a distinctive architectural form with feminine grace, patrician elegance, and luxurious comfort.

Those elements inform Leff's portfolio, which encompasses residential design for wealthy families and Hollywood stars, retail spaces for Giorgio Armani, private clubs and spas, and interiors for yachts and corporate jets. Drawing especially on the defined shapes, simple forms, and opulent materials of the art deco style, she produced a sense of understated luxury and timeless elegance. Twenty projects are featured, all illustrated with lush color photography and with sketches and renderings from the Leff archive, now held at the Pratt Institute in New York.

Honored with every award from the interior design profession, Naomi Leff was inducted into the Design Hall of Fame in 1991 and named the Dean of Design by Architectural Digest in 2005. ... Read more

Few things in life can transform, empower, and enlighten our lives the way a dog can. It is a power that can be measured not only by memories and pawprints left on our hearts and souls (and carpets!), but also by the simple wag of a tail or a cheerful greeting at the end of the day. The Power of Paws poignantly illuminates that special magic and takes the reader on a heartfelt and often humorous journey about loyalty, love, and how to let go.

3-0 out of 5 stars A sweet story of the healing power of dogs
This is a sweet story of dogs who take care of the writer while he takes care of them. It's a sweet story but what I really like is the writing. His writing flows beautifully. The subject matter is full of heart but it's nice to find a book in which the writing is full of heart, too. For people who like this I would recommend Paws & Effect: The Healing Power of Dogs by Sharon Sakson, which is also full of heart and really well-written.

As women we are programmed to want happiness, but the happiness of this world is fleeting and not true joy. Through studying Philippians we can identify our true source of joy.The Bible gives us a clear perspective of the kind of joy we are to have and it is the power of the Living Word that will change our lives. This study will answer questions as, "Is our happiness what God is concerned with?" or "Is being happy the same as having the joy that the Bible speaks of?" If the best way to study scripture is verse by verse and line by line then we must find a way to study through the scriptures in a systematic and expositional way. That is exactly what this study is, a verse-by-verse study for women who are serious about their commitment to know the mind and will of God.
