Product Description
Regardless how you interpret the statistics, the divorce rate in the United States is staggering. But, what if the government could change this? Would families be better off if new public policies made it more difficult for couples to separate?

This book explores a movement that emerged over the past fifteen years, which aims to do just that. Guided by certain politicians and religious leaders who herald marriage as a solution to a range of longstanding social problems, a handful of state governments enacted "covenant marriage" laws, which require couples to choose between a conventional and a covenant marriage. While the familiar type of union requires little effort to enter and can be terminated by either party unilaterally, covenant marriage requires premarital counseling, an agreement bound by fault-based rules or lengthy waiting periods to exit, and a legal stipulation that divorce can be granted only after the couple has received counseling.

Drawing on interviews with over 700 couples-half of whom have chosen covenant unions-this book not only evaluates the viability of public policy in the intimate affairs of marriage, it also explores how growing public discourse is causing men and women to rethink the meaning of marriage. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great research about society using biblical facts
Every youth leader and Christian should read this book.It clearly spells out the results of negligence and ignorance in not preserving respect, responsibility, and religious morals, ethics, and values. It comes to the same conclusion by using both secular history examples, and biblical accounts as well.Very well done and researched. If you love your country and want to preserve it, read this book to tell you how.Great religious tool.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong Wright: Bibical babblings
I certainly hope that I'm wrong, but if you are searching for the comedian Steven Wright'stake on religion, life, etc. this is not the book you're searching for. Whilesome Steven Wrightwrote this book I don't think it's the same person who recently released "I still have a pony" I would be shocked if it was.

If it is this is a biblical -- serious side of Steven Wright that I never wanted to know about. It is slightly fraudulent because if you look below you will notice that other people who bought "I still have a pony" also bought this book. If there is a connection that I am confused. Please enlighten me! ... Read more

Product Description

David Michael Hertz demonstrates how three major American artists—Frank Lloyd Wright, Wallace Stevens, and Charles Ives—were influenced by Emerson’s nineteenth-century transcendentalism. By focusing on the reflective statements of the artists themselves, Hertz shows that Emerson’s belief that all things —including matter and spirit—are in flux had direct bearing on the form and content of their works.

Hertz writes the book as a meditation on the condition of the artist in America, including biographical and historical information as well as his own interpretations of the three artists’ works. In part 1, he examines the emerging creative mind of the architect, poet, and composer, citing Emerson as the central figure who, through his essays, influenced each of them. By tracing their development as powerful and original thinkers, Hertz examines the processes that enabled them to become unique. In part 2, Hertz connects Emerson, Wright, Stevens, and Ives through a shared ideology, evident both in their critical statements and in their creative work. He shows how all three artists had specific, documented knowledge of Emerson’s major works. Their pragmatism, their preoccupation with the primacy of the senses, their love for analogy and loose metaphor, their dedication to individuality and self-reliance, and their eclecticism and conception of originality were shared traits and beliefs gleaned from Emerson.

1-0 out of 5 stars Kindle version of this book has rendering problems
Because this is a book I like to keep with me and it is very heavy, I was thrilled to see there is a Kindle version.Unfortunately within the first 10 pages of the book it becomes clear that is a bad idea because the first long code sample can't be read:it cuts off after 10 lines. If you go to the next page and then back the two pages overlay each other in an unreadable mess.

I hope they correct this because I'd love to have this book on my Kindle.

5-0 out of 5 stars TCP/IP illustrated Vol 2.
If anyone is interested in knowing how TCP/IP is designed in kernel, i would suggest this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic for TCP/IP programming
This is a very extensive book on TCP/IP protocol implementation on BSD/Linux systems. For any one who is interested in involving in networking protocol software development, this book is a must read and also a reference. It deals with kernel implementation of protocols and user based socket APIs/ioctls in detail.I strongly recommend this book for any beginner or experience professional a like.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so good, it is not steven's original.
It is not so good than real steven's volume I. It has not been written by steven. But has a good review for TCP/IP stack.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good summary of routing socket use and obscure BSD ioctls in general
I bought this book because I was faced with having to port an application that uses BSD routing sockets and interface management ioctls to an operating system that doesn't support either of these features. The book contained enough information about these fairly obscure constructs that I was able to figure out what the mystery program was doing. ... Product Description
The international relations of the Persian Gulf have long been dominated by power politics. Its unrivalled energy resources have historically made this geopolitical arena a vital national security interest for the United States. Historically, Persian Gulf security became synonymous with the maintenance of the political status quo, but with the onset of the War on Terror, US foreign policy has shifted in priority towards combatting the root causes of Islamic extremism. The age-old policy of maintaining stability to ensure a free and secure flow of energy is now recognized as having fuelled Islamic extremism. The new strategic objective for the United States is to see a complete overhaul of the political systems within the region and to develop a culture of political participation to achieve regional security and ensure US homeland security. It is a new agenda wholly in keeping with the messianic Wilsonian values that have long been part of US foreign policy. The purpose of this book is to offer a detailed analysis of US foreign policy towards Iran and Iraq since the onset of the post-Cold War era and to chart its developments and changes right through to the contemporary period of the War on Terror epitomized by the Presidency of George W. Bush. It also provides a detailed examination of US foreign policy towards political Islam to show why and how US strategic interests have so fundamentally changed since the trauma of the 9/11 attacks. Written in a clear and accessible style, the book is sure to prove invaluable for students, policymakers, and the general reader interested in the politics and security of this highly important but volatile region of the Middle East. ... Product Description
The oil rich monarchies of the Arabian Peninsula are frequently dismissed as having no democratic systems compared to most other regions of the world. Indeed, the United States justified its action in Iraq by proclaiming that democracy and freedom must be adopted both in Iraq and throughout the wider Middle East, in order to counter the conditions which breed international terrorism. It has been argued that the countries of the Arabian Peninsula need to provide a system of democratic representation that fully takes into account their own history and culture. This raises many questions. Can their firmly established tradition of rule provide the basis for the evolution of an Arab form of constitutional monarchy? Should the West be seeking to encourage national indigenous evolution rather than working to impose Western systems? What are the risks of change and what has been achieved so far? Through articles by eminent academics and government officials, this book addresses these issues and examines the drivers, progress and challenges for future change in this vitally strategic area of the world. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Thin Book on a Thin Subject
According to P. Clawson at the Middle East Quarterly, Fall 2009 edition, the six Persian Gulf monarchies--Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman--have for decades been undergoing sustained economic development that was matched by little if any political reform. Reform in the Middle East Oil Monarchies argues that this situation has changed. By far the most interesting essay is the introduction by Gerd Nonneman, which argues that the growing wealth of the local business communities is leading to emerging "post-rentier" dynamics in which state-controlled oil revenues are no longer the sole source of wealth. He goes on to describe the "liberalization without democratization" that each ruling family hopes to accomplish.

Successive essays look at reform by country. The essays by locals, on Oman and Kuwait, are short and thin. Those on Dubai and Saudi Arabia analyze economic reform in depth. They are interesting--full of information and sound analysis--but largely avoid the more difficult issue of what impact economic development will have on political life. Ahmed Abdelkareem Saif's essay on Qatar and even more so Neil Quilliam's essay on Bahrain explore in depth political changes in those countries. They show that there has been real liberalization--including freer expression and more public discussion--but only very limited democratization in the sense of popular control over the making of major decisions.

Three chapters deal with factors affecting political reform. Bahgat Korany denies the thesis that Islam impedes democracy. Steven Wright argues that the United States has done little to promote it. More plausible than either of those is Emma Murphy's argument that information and communication technologies are forces for modest change, rather than agents of revolutionary, political transformation.

In sum, a thin book on a thin subject--but that is still more than would have been true a decade or two ago when there would have been precious little to put in such a volume. ... Read more

Product Description
A perceptive and detailed Civil War memoir of the First Minnesota Regiment chronicling such famous battles as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. James A. Wright was an orderly sergeant in Company F of the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the Civil War. His memoir, based on his diaries and letters, is the fullest personal account of the battles, marches, and soldier life of one of the most renowned regiments in the Army of the Potomac. The First took part in every significant battle and action in the war in the East from 1861 to 1864. In remarkable detail, he describes the fighting at Bull Run, the Peninsula Campaign, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Bristoe Station. At Gettysburg, the First Minnesota halted the Confederate charge and suffered an 82 percent casualty rate. Wright's account of the battle is striking in its description of the horror the men felt at facing their foes, their determination to do their duty, and the shock of the loss of so many of their comrades. With an eloquence rare in war memoirs, Wright recalls the long marches, the poor food, the inadequate shelter, the dedicated officers, the debilitating illnesses, the longing for home, and the sense of pride in carrying out the struggle to preserve the Union. For conveying what the Civil War meant to one man, it is unmatched. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Splendid "I was there" account
War accounts are usually written from the top down. Here the account is from the ground-up, literally.Sgt Wright tells the story of his volunteer company, Co.F of the 1st Minnesota exactly like it is seen by the average groundpounder.Being a former Viet Nam era "grunt" and also coming from Wright's hometown of Red Wing, Mn, I was able to viscerally feel the physical discomforts of the men as they walked, froze, sweated and stumbled though the boredoms, confusions, terrors and thrills of their experiences.Wright (and the editor) did a masterful job of focusing the story from the perspective of the average participant in the war with just enough background to keep it all in context with the overall events. If you are interested in the Civil War from this sort of perspective, this is the book to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars The story is grand, the prose simple, the details fascinate
This memoir of service with the First Minnesota recounts the sojourn of James Wright, from Red Wing, Minnesota through the battle of Gettysburg.Wright wrote the book long after his service, and his over-long monograph sat in the Minnesota Historical Society until edited and published in this book. The book starts as a slow read, but picks up and eventually begins to mesmerize the reader.

Think of any major event of the day -- September 11th in New York, for example. How valuable will first person accounts be?A first person account of a major past event is very interesting for the details, the feel, the point of view.

Company F was Wright's home.He missed the famous charge of the First Minnesota at Gettysburg, as his Company was off to the side suffering severe casualties of their own during the battle. The story is as grand, even with this "missed" moment.

The editing is good, and preserves the author's tone. The book could have been even shorter, but with some effort during the opening chapters, the reader is well rewarded.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent first person account of a union soldier
I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and content of this book. The author is Sergeant Wright of Co. F, First Minnesota Regiment. His writing is excellent. The editor has chosen to primarily include first person accounts while excluding most of the post war years analysis that often creep into such accounts.

This book so effectively complements "The Last Full Measure - The Life and Death of the First Minnesota Volunteers" by Richard Moe.The Moe book uses first person accounts though it focuses on the broader picture. This book, written by a soldier, effectively details the life of the soldier - including day to day activities from finding food, water, and shelter to the incredible hardships of the march and battle.

The First Minnesota Regiment fought in most of the civil war eastern battles from 1861-1863.It is noted for the highest union casualties at First Bull Run, as well as the highest casualties of any union regiment in the war (80%) at Gettysburg. The regiment has a brief appearance in the 2002 motion picture "Gods and Generals" - I was there for the filming although waiting to see the final production - fall 2002.

The book also contains interesting events not in the Moe book including a great chapter detailing the time in New York city during the draft riots and the eventful winter trip back to Minnesota. ... Read more

Product Description
Throughout history, people have assembled albums that record their lives and the world around them. Among the most remarkable of all albums ever created are those made in the years 1600-1657 for the emperors Jahangir and Shah Jahan. The Mughal dynasty ruled India for more than three centuries, but the period of greatest artistic production was that of these two great emperors, and the albums of paintings and calligraphy (called muraqqa' in Persian), that they assembled now serve as a window to understanding the history and culture of this important period of Indian history. The paintings in the albums include formal (often symbolic) portraits of the emperors themselves, depictions of members of the royal family in relaxed private settings, portraits of courtiers, Sufi saints and mystics, genre scenes, and natural history subjects.

This lavishly-illustrated, color catalogue, contains essays by Elaine Wright, Curator of the Islamic Collections, Chester Beatty Library, Wheeler Thackston, Lecturer, Harvard University, Susan Stronge, Curator Asia Department, Victoria and Albert Museum, and Steven Cohen, Textile Specialist, Independent Scholar and Author, London.

Exhibition Itinerary

The exhibition premieres at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC (May 3 - August 3, 2008).Subsequent venues include the Detroit Institute of Arts, Michigan (August 23 - November 16, 2008); the Honolulu Academy of Arts, Hawai'i (December 17, 2008 - March 1, 2009); and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri (March 21 - June 14, 2009). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Past is a Foreign Country
Sir Alfred Chester Beatty (1875-1968)was an Anglo-American mining magnate who collected Islamic books during the height of the Guilded Age.During a relatively short period of twenty years, he assembled one of the finest collections of Mughal miniature art.It was a collection that he added onto for the next thirty years.Near the end of his life, Beatty fled high taxation rates in Great Britain and moved to Ireland where he established the Alfred Beatty Library."Muraqqa", Persian for album, is a very high quality catalogue produced for a travelling American art exhibit.

One the hallmarks of Islamic civilization were the exquisitely executed books that rulers assembled to record their lives and the world they lived in.The art of the book reached one of its high points in the albums produced from 1600-1657 during the reign of the Mughal Emperors.Miniature art during this period reflected the heady mixture of Persian, Mongol, Hindu and Christian influences.

"Muraqq" is an exquisitely produced 500 page study of Beatty's album collection. Every aspect of the book is first rate. The reproductions are beautifully done and the text is well written and easy to follow. My only advice is purchase the hardback edition. This is a collectable book that will be passed down through the generations.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Art and history in this fabulous collection!
This is the most comprehensive collection of Mughal miniatures that I have come across.Visually stunning, with highly readable text, this is a must-have for anyone who appreciates fine art. Matthew "Richo" Richardson (born 19 March 1975 in Devonport, Tasmania), is a retired professional Australian rules footballer who played for Richmond in the Australian Football League. He was the club's key forward through the late 1990s and the 2000s, the club's leading goalscorer thirteen times and has been selected in the All Australian team in 1996, 1999 and 2008. He has the second most goals in the history of the Richmond Football Club and the eleventh most goals in the history of the VFL/AFL competition. Educated at St. Brendan-Shaw and Don Colleges in Devonport, Tasmania, Richardson was the fourth pick (a father-son selection) in the 1992 AFL Draft, and was recruited from Devonport, Tasmania. He is the son of former Richmond and South Melbourne player Alan "Bull" Richardson. Combining a 196-centimetre frame with exceptional speed and athletic capacity for a large man, on his day he has been a dominant presence for the Tigers.
