Excerpt: Zhou Tong or Jow Tong (Chinese: and ; pinyin: Zhu Tóng; d. late 1121 CE) was the archery teacher and second military arts tutor of famous Song Dynasty general Yue Fei. Originally a local hero from Henan, he was hired to continue Yue Fei's military training in archery after the boy had rapidly mastered spearplay under his first teacher. In addition to the future general, Zhou accepted other children as archery pupils. During his tutelage, Zhou taught the children all of his skills and even rewarded Yue with his two favorite bows because he was his best pupil. After Zhou's death, Yue would regularly visit his tomb twice a month and perform unorthodox sacrifices that far surpassed that done for even beloved tutors. Excerpt: Maggie Cheung Man-yuk (born 20 September 1964) is a Chinese actress and restaurant owner from Hong Kong. Raised in England, she has over 70 films to her credit since starting her career in 1983. She is the first Asian actress to win a prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Cheung is multilingual, having learned to speak English, Mandarin and French in the course of her career. Her native language is Cantonese. Born in Hong Kong, Maggie Cheung Man-yuk traces her family roots to Shanghai. In 1971, she entered Primary one of St. Paul's Convent School. Her merchant-class family emigrated from Hong Kong to the United Kingdom when she was eight. She spent part of her childhood and adolescence in the UK. She returned to Hong Kong in 1982 for vacation, but ended up staying for modeling assignments; she also got a sales job at Lane Crawford department store. In 1983, she entered the Miss Hong Kong pageant, where she was first runner-up and won the Miss Photogenic award. She was a semi-finalist in the Miss World pageant the same year. Prior to 1988, her screen appearance was often limited to cameo roles. One of Cheung's notable movie roles then is that of "May", the girlfriend of police detective "Kevin" Chan Ka Kui in Jackie Chan's Police Story series (however, she did not reprise the role in Police Story 4: First Strike or New Police Story). Maggie frequently cited her performance in the movie As Tears Go By (1988), her first of many collaborations with film director Wong Kar-Wai , as the piece that truly began her serious acting career. Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir (1796-1854), also known as Munshi Abdullah, was a Malayan writer. He was born in Malacca and died in Jeddah, then part of the Ottoman Empire (it is now in Saudi Arabia). The term Munshi means "teacher" or "educator". Munshi Abdullah was a great-grandson of a Hadhrami Arab trader, and also had Tamil and to a smaller extent, Malay ancestry. Owing to his ethnic and religious background, the Malays would refer to him as a Jawi Peranakan or Jawi Pekan. Munshi Abdullah followed his father's career path as a translator and teacher of colonial officials in the Malay Archipelago, mainly the British and the Dutch. Abdullah was known as an ardent critic of the Malay political system of Kerajaan ("kingdom"). He argued that the system of the Kerajaan was detrimental to the Malay individual as it was an impediment to the social improvement of the Malays. The Malay Sultan was deemed as someone who was selfish with no concern towards his subjects to the extent they were treated like animals rather than humans. The idea of modernity and striving for excellence amongst the Malay community stemmed from his ideas and stinging criticisms of the ancient Malay polity of the Kerajaan. Under the Kerajaan, the Malays were deprived of education and hence they were easily oppressed. Without education, they did not have the ability to question the injustice meted out to them and could not take the initiative to institute changes in order to improve their lives. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for newbies!
If the films of Jackie Chan and Jet Li have just gotten you interested in Hong Kong cinema, then this is an excellent book to read to learn more about the HK film industry and what other movies you might want to check out. It's a fun and easy read, featuring reviews and commentaries by several "guest authors" that help make it a rounded volume. From old school kung fu films to new wave filmmakers, this book touches on almost all of them and will leave you excited and ready to explore the wacky world of Hong Kong cinema.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great insight to the HK movie industry
Stefan has written an excellent book on the much misunderstood world of HK cinema. This is a cleverly written train of thought book on all aspects of the industry. It is imformative enough for the true HK buffs and easy for the uninitiated to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hong Kong cinema buffs rejoice!
A wonderful follow-up to Hammond's first foray into Hong Kong cinema, Sex and Zen & Bullet in the Head, Hollywood East is a more detailed account of Hong Kong cinema today. The book has a forward by Michelle Yeoh. The book is organized in the following manner: 1) an overview of Hong Kong, thecity, where to purchase movies and memorabilia, where to see movies, and afunny aside of the top ten Hong Kong imagined dangers followed up by thetop ten real dangers.Hammond seeks to dispel the mythical Hong Kong asporrtrayed by film and present briefly the real Hong Kong where millionsreside. 2) An intro to the astounding work of Johnny To and Milky WayProductions. For those in the know, it will be a fun review and to theuninitiated, Hammond provides a starting point of these must see films 3) asimilar overview for Wong Kar Wai 4) an overview of cop/triad films 5) anoverview of martial arts films including an extensive review of ShawBrother's filmography - a must read for Shaw Brothers junkies! 6) the HongKong horror genre 7) Jackie Chan and his films 8) sexy chick flicks andgirls with guns 9) Jet Li and his films 10) John Woo and his films 11)crazy stunts and the stories behind them 12) extreme cinema, shock cinemafor example: the Untold Story 13) other resources including web listings Also included are very funny inserts called "Hex Errors" thathave outrageously translated subtitles for each section and a glossary ofterminology. There is also a 16 page color insert of mini biographies ofup and coming stars including: Michelle Yeoh, Shu Qi, Karen Mok, MichaelWong, Aaron Kwok, Pinky Cheung, Aimen Wong, Athena Chu, Christy Chung,Takeshi Kaneshiro, Kelly Chen, Gigi Lai, Sam Lee, Wu Chien-Lien, MichelleReis and Gigi Leung. One does wonder how Yeoh fits in this categorythough. The book is fun, easy to read and factfilled for repeated reading. A must for all Hong Kong cinema buffs!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Hong Kong Cinema
Stefan Hammond provides a very timely update on the current Hong Kong cinema scene with his latest gonzo effort, which ranges from a superb chapter on Jackie Chan to some decidely offbeat themes such as "Bad Eggs and Naked Killers" and "Dodge that Flying Witch'sHead." The photographs are wonderful, the sidebars such as "SevenLittle Stunt Nuggets" provide an inside look at the industry, and hiswriting style perfectly fits the zany, expressionistic world of H.K.cinema. I'm no expert in the subject, but I found the book fascinating, informative, and highly opinionated, though my only question is:"Who's the babe-in-blue-with-gun on the front cover?"

4-0 out of 5 stars Something Wild
Imagine if Hunter Thompson, Siskel & Ebert, and Rosanne combined to critique a Dali picture, and you'd get a pretty good idea of what to expect. Hollywood East is chop-socky gonzo journalism. If you don'tparticularly care or know much about HK movies beyond Jackie C and TheBruce, you will after you read this book. In fact, Stefan Hammond seems towrite with the frenetic action and dark humor that permeates the veryfabric of the movies and people he's describing. If anything, HE has itover S&Z&ABITH in the depth of descriptions and background: HKitself, the movies, and the people who make them. He's got a sense of humorthat would be declared a national treasure if he were Japanese. F'rexample, describing myths about The Kong, he assures you that when you order ramenwith slices of pork it ain't gonna be 'Poodle Noodles.'

To sum it up,I've never read a book written in a style so evocative of its subject. It'sclear that he's writing about something he loves. ... Read more
