Product Description
Here is an authoritative and historical analysis of international relations during the Cold War and its aftermath. In one volume, it both describes and interprets events since 1945 for an undergraduate audience. It explores how the Cold War impacted upon world politics as a whole, but also deals with such important regional problems as the Middle East wars, the development of European integration and the end of the European empires in Africa and Asia. While focusing on political change, careful attention is paid to the evolution of the global economy and the interplay between international and domestic developments, as well as to the growth of 'interdependence'. Particular attention is paid to the role of the United States, particularly in the 1990s when it became the world's only Superpower. The text covers the nature of the Cold War, the development of the Western and Eastern blocs, North-South, decolonization and Third World issues, international economic relations, armaments and nuclear strategy and globalisation.Features include overviews of each section ... Product Description
This collection of essays is largely based upon papers given to the Conference on British Security Policy, 1945-56, held at King's College, London, in March 1987. Over 100 scholars from Britain and abroad attended the conference, which highlighted the growing interest in post-World War II international history. From 1945, when she became one of the members of the wartime "Grand Alliance", to 1956, when she faced defeat in the Suez crisis, Great Britain continued to play a major role in international affairs. The papers contained in this volume explore a wide range of themes in British diplomatic policy over the crucial post-war decade, often using newly-available evidence from government sources. Major topics include propaganda, atomic policy, imperial problems, European unity and Britain's response to crises in the Middle East and Far East. Michael Dockrill is also the author of "The Cold War, 1945-63". John W.Young has written "Britain, France and the Unity of Europe, 1945-51" and "The Foreign Policy of Churchill's Peacetime Administration". ... Read more

Product Description
In 1993 Longman published John W. Young's Companion to Cold War and Detente, 1941-91. Now, five years later, Professor Young has revised and updated the original book to take account of recent, momentous events. Although the Cold War is a chapter of history that has ended, nevertheless we all still live with its effects and its legacy. As ever the book surveys East-West relations, in all their manifestations, from the Grand Alliance of the Second World War to the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s. Though centred on the international policies of the USA and the USSR, the book throws light on almost every aspect of postwar international history from the rise of Mao's China to the Bosnian civil war, ranging from Vietnam to Angola, from Afghanistan to Cuba, from Margaret Thatcher to Kim Il Sung. Undoubtedly it will continue to be an invaluable aid to anyone interested in the history and politics of modern times. ... Read more

Product Description
In contrast to most works of international history, which dwell on particular relationships, strategies, wars or crises, the questions in this book are about how diplomacy was actually conducted. The period 1963-76 saw significant changes in diplomatic practice globally. It was particularly a time of change for Britain as the country negotiated its declining world power and joined the European Community and economic problems forced spending cuts. Looking at the reform of the British Diplomatic Service and Foreign Office as well as the role of ambassadors, the use of 'special' envoys, summits and state visits, John Young sheds light on how diplomacy was organised in order to put into effect the country's foreign policy and on how diplomatic practice changed over time to make it more effective. Drawing comparisons with other countries, especially the United States, this study focuses on the means of diplomacy rather than the ends. ... Read more

Product Description
In the excitement about the possibilities that instructional technology has opened up for teaching and learning, and in the ensuing discussion of start-up and infrastructure costs, and concerns about access and equity, too little attention had been paid to what students are learning through online courses and on the evaluation of such technologically-mediated courses.

This volume provides an overview of strategies for assessing the contribution of technology and illustrates these with specific examples.

The contributors provide an evaluation framework together with specific examples derived from an extensive instructional technology initiative at a large university. They present a general overview of how to evaluate technology and indicate the importance of the institutional context for technological innovation. The address the nature of potential learning outcomes and illustrate such evaluation methods as multiple iteration strategies, comparison designs, and within-class strategies. Among the pedagogies discussed are virtual and Web-controlled labs, simulations, video, and Web-based research tools.

This book addresses the challenges of assessment in technology-based instruction in higher education, and places them within the context of costs. ... Read more

Product Description
From the Konza Prairie to the Cimarron National Grassland, the Arikaree Breaks to the Spring River Wildlife Area, Kansas boasts hundreds of miles of marvelous hiking trails, many of which are unknown or unfamiliar to even longtime residents of the state. This book is the first complete guide to those outdoor destinations--the only book you'll need to explore and appreciate these natural treasures.

Catherine Hauber and John Young lead you over 430 miles of trails that showcase the beauty of Kansas's woodlands and wetlands, its prairies and high plains. Their Hiking Guide to Kansas covers trails found at 56 sites in all parts of the state--both popular routes like those along Clinton Lake and out-of-the-way sites like Big Basin Prairie Preserve.

After directing you to the trailhead, Hauber points out facts of interest along the way about history, geology, and wildlife, presenting them at a level of detail that will make any outing more meaningful. She provides trail lengths for each hike, notes access for bikers or horseback riders, and clearly identifies landmarks and trail blazes. She also has made the book as inviting as the trails themselves by including dozens of full-color photos that will make you want to lace up your hiking boots right away.

Another valuable feature of the book, John Young's state-of-the-art maps, show you exactly where the trails lead. Color-keyed to physiographic regions designated by the Kansas Geological Survey, these maps were developed using measurement techniques ranging from compass and pedometer to a global positioning satellite receiver and reflect painstaking attention to each bend and feature of the trail.

Whether you're a casual daytripper or a serious hiker, you'll find trails for every season in this book, the only guide you'll need for enjoying the state's wild places on foot. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kansas Hiker
Hiking Guide to Kansas is an excellent book. It gives detailed accounts for hiking trails through out the entire state of Kansas. It is well written in an easy to understand format, unlike some guide books where the author(s) seem to be talking down to the reader. I bought this book about five years ago and hiked about a quarter of the trails described. Contents of the book provides: maps, pictures, directions, and even if some of the trails are compatable for horse back riding, pets, or bicyles. The maps and directions are quite easy to follow; if you do not arrive at your desired location you did not pay attention to detail. I took a year off from hiking and started up again this year. I thought I had lost this book, I was actually moping around like a lost puppy, and was about to purchase another when I accidently found it on a book self. Though not as cleverly written as some other hiking guide books seem to claim, this is a very good guide book for hiking the Sunflower State. Bet many people out there do not even think that you can hike in Kansas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hiking in Kansas has never been as simple as it is now.

Product Description

This book is the second in the three volume set The Labour Governments 1964-1970 and concentrates on Britain's international policy under the Labour governments in the 1960s and is available for the first time in paperback.

The coverage ranges from defence policy and the government machine to European integration, NATO and the Vietnam war. Harold Wilson and his ministers have often been accused of betraying the sense of promise that greeted their victory in 1964. Using recently released archival evidence, John Young argues that a more balanced view of the government will recognise the real difficulties that surrounded decision-making, not only on Vietnam, but also on Aden, the Nigerian civil war and Rhodesia.

Economic weakness, waning military strength, Cold War tensions and the need to placate allies all placed limits on what a once-great but now clearly declining power could achieve. Furthermore, the government proved of pivotal importance in the history of Britain's international role, in that it presided over a major shift from positions East of Suez to a focus on European concerns, a focus that has remained until the present day.

The book will be of vital importance to students of British history and international relations during this exciting period. Together with the other books in the series, on domestic policy and economic policy, it provides a complete picture of the development of Britain under the premiership of Harold Wilson.

Product Description
When John Young first noticed Edwin Smith 25 years ago he soon realized that Smith was a very remarkable person. This book, the fruit of several years of research, describes how Smith's increasingly respectful attitude to Africa and Africans was expressed practically and in many scholarly and popular writings. After 40 years of obscurity Smith is being noticed again by scholars. In his foreword, Cracknell points out that this book should interest several categories of reader: Methodists and other Christians should see one who brought them honour; Missiologists should notice Smith's early affirmation of African ideas and cultures; while the wider academic community - especially anthropologists and Africanists - should find much of interest in the work of one who was highly respected by their forebears. ...
