2-0 out of 5 stars Bad Book
I found this book to be very dry. It is the cut and paste life of Loretta Young, with many errors that I have found from reading other matterial about her life. There is even a lie that they tell as the truth. They write that a woman came forward to say that Loretta Young gave birth secretly to a baby in a Catholic Hospital. That is very untrue. While Loretta Young did give birth to a baby she gave birth to the baby in a house that she and her mother owned, not at a hospital.

I would not recommend this book if I wanted to know about Loretta Young. I would recommend Uncommon Knowledge or Forever Young-the Life, Loves, and enduring faith of a Hollywood Ledgend instead of this book. ... Read more

This the most memorable story of a lovely lady,,,she has run a good race and i just love her,,,God bless you Gretchen,,,intercede for us down,,,margie

4-0 out of 5 stars For Young and Old
This is a detailed summary of the life and career of actress Loretta Young, with special emphasis on her personal religious beliefs and her contentious relationship with her foster/true life daughter. The book is well researched and presented, with plenty of photos. The price was amazingly good, and well worth the purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Life and Times of Loretta Young
This book is pretty straight forward. Like the title says this is a book about Loretta Youngs life; loves, Clark Gable, Spencer Tracey, Tom Lewis, etc, etc.; and faith one of the mainstays in her life threw all the good and bad times she experienced.

All in all a very good book about Loretta Young. The best part about it is that finally Loretta admitted that Judy Lewis was her biological child with Clark Gable.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
The book was interesting and I learned more about Loretta Young's life.I agree, it was a bit "candy coated", but I think it explains the "sign of the times" and that is where she was in her life.I think it is great that she had such a strong faith in God and that her religion played a very important part of her life. Her life is a good example for others. In this day and time, we let too much just "hang out there".It would be nice if our world was a little more "reserved".

1-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment
Whilst Loretta Young unquestionably lead an interesting life, you would not know it from this whitewashed, saintly version. This book would have been far better promoted as a commentary on Loretta Young and her relationship with god. Certainly those readers wanting to know about her experiences in Hollywood in the 1930s would be disappointed. Her screen career was largely glossed over - we are talking about a woman who worked with pioneers such as Lon Chaney - you'd barely know it from this book. Similarly, there was little on her relationship with her sisters or any comments of substance about their lives or careers. Even the more 'scandalous' elements of her life were only worth a couple of pages - the rest of the book was more like a conversion exercise. Whilst the religious element was obviously something that influenced who she was as a person, the author did not delve beyond this.It is an injustice if this is the best that can be offered in her memory. ... Product Description
Story of a well-to-do elderly woman, who befriends the homeless and volunteers her time with children, who learns she has an incurable illness and wants desperately to reunite her three grown grand children (who are scattered across the U.S. living their own lives), with their estranged father, her son. She hires a private detective to search for them so as to try to get everyone together on Christmas Eve A heart warming story line that most can relate to. Loretta Young brings her strength, intelligence and charm to this role. My regret is that I can't find this film on VHS to add to my collection. I would love to be able to enjoy it over and over and over again. Cast overview, first billed only: Loretta Young.... Amanda Kingsley Arthur Hill.... Andrew Kingsley Ron Leibman.... 4-0 out of 5 stars good
I saw this movie on tv many years ago & really liked it. Great story line. I have been looking for it & just found it on Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars We need this on DVD!!!
This is one of those wonderful heartwarming movies you have to own for the holiday season!!I would LOVE to see it come out on DVD!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas Eve: 12 1/2 on a scale of 1-10!
We rate films on a scale of 1-10, 10 being tops. This one we scored 12 1/2!Really refreshing and encouraging to witness the positive resolution to broken relationships.Only wish the copyright owners would get off dead center and offer it on DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Remake of Classic Christmas Movie
Christmas Eve is based on the 1947 Christmas Eve movie that starred George Raft. The new version is skillfully updated and tweaked. While both movies are good, I actually favor the 1986 made for TV version. There is a warmth that is palpable between the actors -- and the cast is impressive -- Loretta Young, Arthur Hill, Trevor Howard, etc. This is what a Christmas Movie should be -- heartwarming, family oriented, and a reminder that Christmas is about love, not gifts. The story contains just the right amount of tension to to keep it from being light-weight, it has substance, and yet, there is enough genuine tenderness that I am brought to tears at the end of the film, without fail, just like I am with It's a Wonderful Life.

It is unfortunate that this made for TV movie has never been released on DVD. I bought the VHS tape with great reluctance, but the movie is so good, that the holiday season simply isn't complete without Christmas Eve -- even if the version isn't visually crisp and the sound is muddy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great service
I ordered this video for my mom for Christmas as it was one of her favorites. It came quickly and was in great shape just as it was described. I would definitely order from this vendor again. ... Read more

Product Description
The text begins with an overview of factors which contribute to adjustment in adoption, including the role problems of adoptive parents, adoptions by step-parents, and neglect and abuse of children prior to adoption. Data from the British national child development study analyzed in this book indicate that adoption is a powerful environmental influence on children who without adoption would be at considerable risk for the development of major behavioural problems, delinquency, and mental illness. Several chapters on inter-country adoption highlight the policy dilemmas in this area, and the slow progress towards comprehensive, international agreements to protect the needs of inter-country adopted children. Two follow-up studies are reported of Chinese and Vietnamese children (now young adults) adopted by British parents in the 1960s and 1970s. The excellent outcomes for these children indicate that despite early trauma and neglect prior to adoption, the mental health of these adoptees is as good as mental health profiles in within-country adoptions. Case studies of international adoptions from India, China, Phillippines, and Korea are presented, based on several years of fieldwork.Transracial adoptions in Britain and Canada are studied in detail in this book. It is shown (from two surveys in London) that ordinary black families would be much more likely to adopt black children if they were supported in this role; these same families are also supportive of transracial adoption for black children if this can provide them with a good family life. Bagley and Young present findings of along-term follow-up of black children adopted by white parents, indicating largely excellent outcomes. They argue that transcracial adoption, like transracial marriages are healthy indicators of the movement towards harmony and integration in diverse, multicultural societies. The support provided by the wider social system (or the lack of such support in Canada, for Native American children placed with white adopters) is seen as crucial, and could account for the many adoption breakdowns of Native children in white families. A unique follow-up study of Native adoptees in Canada supports this argument. This study also points to lack of professionalism by many child welfare workers involved in the adoption of "special needs" children in Canada. An important section of this book concerns the factors which underlie adoption breakdown or disruption. An extensive survey of children in residential are following disrupted adoptions points to a failure of many social workers to provide post-adoption information and support, particularly for older child adoptions. ... "After a 23 year absence, Oscar and three-time Emmy winner Loretta Young returns to television in this heartwarming drama to play Amanda Kingsley, a spirited and somewhat eccentric millionairess who owns 51% of one of the largest companies in the United States. Along with her dignified servant, Maitland, she gives food and money to the homeless and unfortunate in New York City. Although Amanda's son Andrew runs the family business, he is jealous of his mother's power in the corporation and upset by her charitable ways. Heartless, cold and calculating, Andrew alienates his own three children and eventually drives them away. As the holidays near, Amanda goes to great lengths to get her grandchildren back to New York for one last Christmas reunion. It all comes to a climax as her hired detective tracks them down while, at the same time, Andrew and his lawyers are preparing to go to court to charge Amanda with incompetence in managing her wealth. Amanda's enduring love and faith in her family do prevail to enable her to bring them all together for 'Christmas Eve.'" [from back cover of case] ... Read more

The film, directed by Gregory Ratoff is forgotten today and starred Ms. Young as a 19th Century ballerina of all things. Early life and academic career Mayer was born into a Jewish family who fled to the United States during the Nazi invasion of Luxembourg in May 1940. He became a naturalized US citizen in 1944. Mayer received his education at the City College of New York and Yale University . He has been professor at Wesleyan University (1952-1953), Brandeis University (1954-1958) and Harvard University (1958-1961). He has taught at Princeton University since 1961. Views A self-proclaimed "left dissident Marxist", Mayer's major interests are in modernization theory and what he calls "The Thirty Years' Crisis" between 1914 and 1945. In Mayer's view, Europe was characterized in the 19th century by rapid modernization in the economic field by industrialization and retardation in the political field. Mayer has argued that he calls the "Thirty Years' Crisis" was caused by the problems of a dynamic new society produced by industrialization facing a rigid political order. In particular, Mayer feels that the aristocracy in all of the European countries held far too much power, and it was their efforts to keep power that led to World War I , the rise of fascism , World War II , and the Holocaust.
