Extractions: Atmospheric Chemistry is the study of the composition of the atmosphere, the sources and fates of gases and particles in air, and changes induced by natural and anthropogenic processes. Although a relatively new field, it has received growing attention since many of the environmental problems of greatest importance involve trace vapors and aerosols. Popular examples are the ozone hole , greenhouse gases and urban air pollution Atmospheric Chemistry has as its foundation the photochemistry of the molecular constituents of air. However, atmospheric chemists also study the formation and properties of airborne particles, cloud processing of materials, transport and dispersion of chemical tracers, and biogeochemical cycles. In practice, these activities translate into the development of instruments and models for studying the atmosphere, and the application of such tools to answer scientific questions. The atmosphere most easily reveals its secrets to those who are willing to think broadly. Atmospheric chemistry is a truly multidisciplinary field that seeks understanding of the environment through broad thinking.

Extractions: The research theme encompasses the processes responsible for the emission, uptake, transport, and chemical transformation of ozone and precursor molecules associated with its production in the troposphere and its destruction in the stratosphere, as well as the formation, properties, and transport of aerosols in the Earth's troposphere and stratosphere (the direct impact of aerosols on atmospheric radiation transfer and effects on cloud formation and properties are discussed in the subsequent chapter on the global water and energy cycle). Since variations in solar activity have considerable influence on atmospheric composition and chemistry, the monitoring of solar radiation (both total irradiance and spectrally-resolved irradiance) is also included. How is stratospheric ozone changing, as the abundance of ozone-destroying chemicals decreases and new substitues increases? What trends in atmospheric constituents and solar radiation are driving global climate? What are the effects of clouds and surface hydrologic processes on Earth's climate? How do stratospheric trace constituents respond to change in climate and atmospheric compostition?

Extractions: AIRS will measure air temperature, humidity, clouds, and surface temperature. Scientists will use AIRS data to better understand weather and climate. The National Weather Service and NOAA will use it to improve their weather and climate models. AIRS will fly aboard the AQUA spacecraft of the Earth Observing System (EOS), scheduled for launch early in this century. A research project of scientists at the Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies (COLA) and the University of New Hampshire, in collaboration with colleagues at CPTEC and the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, to investigate seasonal-to-interannual variability and predictability in the Amazonian climate system.

For example, the fate of most pollutants emitted into the atmosphere is governed by their chemical reactions. In turn these reactions may lead to changes in the abundances of naturally occurring gases. Pollution can range from local (e.g. photochemical smog) to global (e.g. depletion of stratospheric ozone). The School of the Environment has a strong research programme in atmospheric chemistry ranging from laboratory and field measurements to global numerical modelling.

Anthropogenic perturbations such as land-use and industrial activities have profoundly modified the chemical composition of the troposphere and stratosphere, with potentially important consequences on future climate and living organisms. Examples of such changes include the formation of an ozone hole over Antarctica since the late 1970s, the observed trends in long-lived greenhouse gases, the change in the concentrations of tropospheric ozone and acidic deposition due to growing emissions of hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide in industrialized regions. Laboratory studies, field experiments and modeling activities by atmospheric chemists at the University of Washington are directed at determining chemical composition and chemical processes in the atmosphere and in turn their effects on the atmosphere, and on a larger scale the biogeochemistry of the earth. The laboratory and experimental research deals with trace gas measurements and physical, chemical and optical properties of particles. Global models of atmospheric chemistry and climate use these observations to improve their predictions of future changes in atmospheric composition, and also guide the development of analytical techniques and the logistics of large-scale field measurement programs.

The global concentrations of several trace gases are observed to be increasing at rates that are predicted to cause significant long-lived changes in the chemical and radiative properties of the atmosphere. The physical state of the stratosphere is dominated by the photochemistry of ozone and oxygen strongly influenced by water, nitrogen oxides and chlorinated molecules. the adverse health effects of air pollution, the acidity of precipitation and degradation of visibility are influenced by the chemistry of ozone, nitrogen and sulfur oxides, organic molecules and free radicals. A change in global climate may result from the effects of gases and aerosols on the earth's radiation balance either directly or indirectly by interactions with clouds. Laboratory and field experiments and modeling by atmospheric chemists are directed at determining chemical composition and chemical processes in the atmosphere and in turn their effects on the atmosphere, and on a larger scale the biogeochemistry of the earth. The research deals with the trace gas measurements and the physical, chemical and optical properties of particles, focusing on a range of topics from analytical techniques and instrumental development to global climate models which use the measurements as input and also guide the development of analytical techniques and the logistics of large scale field measurement programs. Atmospheric chemistry research at the University of Washington can be found in the Departments of Atmospheric Sciences, and Chemistry, and in the School of Oceanography.

This cooling of the stratosphere is expected to affect the ozone layer by decreasing ozone destruction in equatorial regions and increasing ozone destruction in polar regions. These effects would be added to the increased ozone destruction expected due to rising chlorofluorocarbon concentrations. The stratospheric cooling by the greenhouse gases combined with these ozone layer changes will in turn affect the circulation at this level and conceivably at lower levels also. Indeed, there is already some evidence that Antarctic ozone changes have been influencing the Southern Hemisphere springtime climate by delaying the final warming. CGCS researchers are extensively involved in laboratory and theoretical studies to address two general interrelated goals: to understand quantitatively the elementary chemical steps at the molecular level that enable reliable extrapolations to atmospheric conditions; and to understand the interrelationship between chemical and atmospheric processes in order to elucidate the relevant chemical reactions that affect the atmosphere on regional and global scales. Extractions: AQLs Field Measurements Group is dedicated to developing and implementing state-of-the-art measurement instruments to collect quality air emissions data. The group played a lead role in collecting chemical and meteorological measurements for the Southern Oxidants Study (SOS), a $25 million multi-investigator research effort devoted to furthering understanding of ground-level ozone formation in the Southeastern United States. Research scientists from the Atmospheric Chemistry Group have also been heavily involved in the Pacific Exploratory Missions (PEM) of NASA's Global Tropospheric Experiment, which seek to study natural atmospheric systems in remote areas. AQLs Field Measurements Group is supported by meteorologists who collect local data on atmospheric conditions such as wind speed, temperature, wind direction and solar radiation that influence air quality measurements. These measurements are used for air quality forecasts, such as those utilized by the Atlanta Ozone Advisory Program, and for interpretation of air quality data. James Pearson , Group Leader

Extractions: National Academy of Sciences, 1984 In spite of the relatively primitive state of the science of atmospheric chemistry in the late 1950s, the authors of the UCAR "Blue Book" proposed chemistry as one of the disciplines that should be included in a broad and vigorous attack on scientific problems of the atmosphere. They recognized that some chemical species in the atmosphere are far from inert and suggested some scientific issues that the new institute should address: For example, the photochemical processes by which the ionization and recombination of gaseous components is [sic] achieved are only partly known. The chemical equilibrium of ozone in the upper atmosphere has a profound influence on biological processes on the ground as well as being a possible link between fluctuations in the emission of ultra- violet energy from the sun and atmospheric motion at lower levels. The distribution and decay of natural and artificial radioisotopes, the carbon dioxide and nitrogen cycles in the atmosphere, and the processes by which particulate materials are diffused and removed from the atmosphere are problems which have assumed ecological significance.

Extractions: Research in the Atmospheric Chemistry Department focuses on ozone and photo-oxidants, their chemical reactions and global cycles. We perform highly sensitive measurements of ozone precursors, key breakdown products of hydrocarbons and radicals to characterize chemical reaction chains.The processes are studied through kinetic and photochemical laboratory investigations, in situ and remote sensing measurements. Further activities include development of numerical models to describe meteorological and chemical processes in the atmosphere, to simulate the complex atmospheric interactions.
