The field of chemistry is very diverse, and NSF support for chemistry research goes beyond the CHE Division. Other NSF divisions supporting chemistry research include Astronomical Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences, Molecular and Cellular Biosciences, Chemical and Transport Systems, Earth Sciences, Advanced Computational Research, Physics, and Materials Research. Similarly, support for the development of infrastructure in chemistry also is provided by appropriate divisions in the Directorates for Education and Human Resources (EHR) and Biosciences (BIO) through the Division of Biological Infrastructure. Molecular science plays a central role in many areas of science and engineering. Our modeling efforts over the last year were primarily directed in two areas: Bringing new computational capabilities, already developed at the DOE Defense Program lab-oratories, to PNNL to address similar physical problems using alternative methods that may be more suitable for compressible flow and reactive transport, including subgrid modeling and Lagrangian and ALE methods with AMR. Determining example problems to test the strengths and weaknesses of the structured versus the unstructured mesh approaches. We have obtained serial versions of LLNL's Dyna3d, and Ale3d with the understanding that parallel versions of some subroutines can be made available on an as-needed basis.
