The emergence of a maturing biotechnology business, the establishment of new methods of drug discovery, and remarkable progress in sequencing the human genome and other genomes have altered forever the fundamental nature of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical businesses. If you enjoyed the nineties, you'll love the aughts, or naughts, or double zeroes. Whatever this new decade is called, says Ken Johnson, an independent staffing consultant who now works at the Aventis Pharmaceuticals Global Drug Development and Strategic Research Center in Bridgewater, N.J., it will stimulate even more change in the business of life science. "Just as we experienced dramatic changes in the steel, automotive, and computer industries," says Johnson, "change and transition have come to the pharmaceutical and life science industries. Whether change occurs out of necessity or improved technologies or is forced by governmental regulation, change will continue to affect companies and their employees." The aura of change stems partly from global competition. "We have an extremely dynamic pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and life science industry in the United States. In Europe and the rest of the world, those fields are experiencing high growth as well," Johnson points out. "To meet that competition in the next decade, companies and their employee populations will have to do things better than we did during our best year of the past decade."

Extractions: Chem Home education The Ph.D. degree is granted in recognition of a broad and deep knowledge of the facts and theories of modern chemistry, and of an ability to carry out independent research in chemistry, as demonstrated by the submission of a doctoral dissertion describing original and substantial contributions to the field. The major steps in the progress toward the degree are described briefly below. Upon entering the graduate programs, Ph.D. students are required to take a series of Area Examinations which test the students' competence at the undergraduate level in the general areas of chemistry (e.g. organic, physical, inorganic). The Area Examinations are designed to ensure a proper fundamental level of preparation for graduate study, and serve as a guide to choosing appropriate course work for each entering student. A minimum of seven approved courses (or 28 units), including six graduate-level courses (or 24 units) in chemistry are required. A grade of B or better in each course is required to remain in good academic standing. Each student who is seeking the Ph.D. degree must pass a Second Year written examination. For students in organic and inorganic chemistry, this examination will take place in a student's fourth quarter and will cover the student's research progress and plans. For students in physical, atmospheric or analytical chemistry, the examination will cover the first year course material in the student's area. The examination in these latter areas will occur during the summer following a student's third quarter. In all areas the examination will be graded by a faculty committee appointed by the Department Chair.

This article discusses recent developments in this new interdisciplinary field, including work on the alleged reduction of chemistry to quantum mechanics, the role of models, naive realism, and the question of molecular structure. It is argued that as chemistry continues to grow in sophistication, these and other conceptual issues become increasingly important to chemical educators at all levels.
