The Songlines

by Bruce Chatwin Said to be Bruce Chatwin's best work, The Songlines pays homage to the nomadic spirit that prompted his own peripatetic existence, with an exploration of the "labyrinth of invisible pathways which meander all over Australia," the "Dreaming-tracks" or "Songlines" of the Aboriginals. At the peak of his storytelling form, Chatwin weaves memoir, history, science, and philosophy into an Australian Outback travel tale of brilliance and beauty. Amazon.com Paperback: 295 pages Penguin USA (Paper); ISBN: 0140094296; Rep edition (June 1988) Aboriginal Autonomy : Issues and Strategies H. C. Coombs, et al Hardcover / Published 1995 Usually ships promptly. Reflecting on the nature of Aboriginal identity and the importance of autonomy, one of White Australia's most influential and eloquent advocates of indigenous self-determination suggests strategies by which it might be achieved in practice through a personal plea for a just society. He's been touring an Aboriginal community in Western Victoria at the invitation of Geoff Clark, the Chairman of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commssion. The two men are putting together a plan to develop trade links between Indonesia and businesses owned by Australian aborigines. listen audio help Presenter/Interviewer: Ben Knight
Speakers: Dr Amien Rais, Chairman of Indonesia's People's Consultative Assembly; Geoff Clark, Chairman of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commssion. KNIGHT: Powerful friends are always good to have, but for Australian Aborigines, Dr Amien Rais may seem an unusual choice.
He's a strong supporter of the rights of Muslims, but in Indonesia, Muslims are in the majority, and Dr Rais has been far less vocal on the rights of Indonesia's indigenous people in places like Kalimantan and Papua.
But the Chairman of ATSIC, Geoff Clark, says he's got much to offer Australia's Aborigines.

The first Australians were called “Aborigines” by the white colonists in 1788.The word “aborigine” literally means an original or native inhabitant of a country.
Many Aboriginal people prefer to be called “Kooris”, a word that comes from a north-coast language. The name “Murri” is also used in the north and north-west of New South Wales.” Archaeologists believe that humans have lived in Australia for at least 60,000 years. According to Aboriginal beliefs, people have been in Australia since the beginning of time, which Aboriginal people call the Dreaming. The first people probably came from South-East Asia, but we can only guess where they landed, whether they came in one “wave” or in many migrations over the years, and which routes they took as they spread across the continent. No one knows exactly how many people lived in Australia before the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, but recent studies estimate there were probably around one million Aborigines at that time.

A Witness From Australia's 'Stolen Generation'
By Michael Richardson International Herald Tribune SYDNEY - In 1942, when John Kundereri Moriarty was 4 years old and living happily in an Aboriginal tribal community in northern Australia, he was taken from his family. It happened like a kidnapping, he recalled in an interview. ''My mum went to pick me up from school and I wasn't there,'' he said. ''We had been loaded on the backs of army lorries. Then we were transported south through Alice Springs.'' Moriarty, now a designer, is a part of the so-called stolen generation of Aborigines, Australia's indigenous minority. From 1910 until the 1970's, about 100,000 Aborigine children - many, like Moriarty, of mixed Aboriginal and European parentage - were taken from their parents under state and federal laws based on the premise that Aborigines were a doomed race and that saving the children by putting them into foster homes and providing them with Western education was the humane alternative. Aborigines don't see it that way. ''It was an insidious, arrogant policy that amounted to cultural genocide,'' Moriarty wrote in an autobiography, ''Saltwater Fella,'' published this year by Viking Penguin. ''It was the stuff Hitler was made of, the things he espoused that are seen as abhorrent today.''

Australia's treatment of Aborigines 'appalling' UN issues unprecedented criticism; government's stance '30 years out of date' As athletes and spectators arrive in Sydney from all over the world, Survival today condemned Australia's treatment of Aborigines as 'appalling'. Survival's Director General Stephen Corry said, 'The Australian government seems hell-bent on doing everything it can to deny Aborigines their internationally-recognised rights, especially their land rights. Its stance can only be described as racist, and seems like a throwback to attitudes 30 years ago. Recent government legislation will make it very difficult for many Aborigines to reclaim land now occupied by huge ranches.' Two UN Committees have recently condemned the Australian government's treatment of its Aboriginal population. Anger amongst Aborigines has never been as high. Typical of the government's contempt towards them is its refusal to apologise for previous policies under which tens of thousands of Aboriginal children were removed from their parents. In contrast, many other countries such as Canada and Japan have issued apologies for historical policies that would be unacceptable today. Australia recently became the first affluent industrialised country to be subject to the UN Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination's early warning procedure. The Foreign Minister Mr Alexander Downer's response to UN criticism of mandatory sentencing laws (which disproportionately affect Aborigines) was that the UN would

I first met Andreas and Katharina Lommel on June 23rd 1955 when Constable Buster Thorpe and I rode our mules into their camp north of Gibb River Station where they were studying a sacred Wandjina Cave painting.
Buster was the resident policeman of Fitzroy Crossing, a one-horse town in Kimberley, NW Australia. With two aborigine trackers, the four of us were on the last mounted police patrol, a 700 mile ride on mules visiting some of the Cattle Stations north of the King Leopold Range. Gibb River Station was our most northern destination and we had come to check up on the activities of two German archaeologists, Andreas and Katharina Lommel.
Katharina is an artist, and her job was to trace the Wandjina paintings on the walls of the sacred Aborigine site, and then copy them onto canvas so that she could reproduce the original colours. In 1955 there was no colour photography. Her paintings can still be seen in the Munich Natural History Museum. During the 1991 Bradshaw Foundation's expedition with Grahame Walsh in the Kimberley researching the Bradshaw Paintings, he referred to an unpublished document by Dr Lommel recording the time he had lived with NW Australian Aborigine Tribes in 1938. This lead to Grahame and myself visiting Andreas and Katharina in Munich in 1992, and Grahame arranging for the translation of the document into English, and subsequent publication of UNAMBAL.

Lorraine Lamothe Rug Art For more than 40,000 years before European navigators visited the shores of the Great South Land, Aborigines occupied Australia, including its arid deserts, tropical rainforests, coastal plains, mountains, and especially its major river systems. Estimates by anthropologists put the population of Australian Aborigines before 1770 at more than 300,000. They spoke 500 different languages grouped in thirty-one related language families. Aborigines were completely at home in their surroundings and had no trouble "living off the land." This was mainly because of their intimate knowledge of the topography and natural resources of their tribal territories, and their complete understanding of the habits of the animals they hunted. The Australian aborigines extensively used insects from their surroundings as food, medicine, and as part of their cultural beliefs. However, most data concerning the use of insects by Australian Aborigines occur as scattered references in various anthropological, gastronomical, and pharmaceutical sources. This article highlights the use of insects by the Australian Aborigines. Another lepidopteran that was considered a food delicacy by the Aborigines was the witchety grub. Although different source suggest different names for this insect, the larvae of (Xyleutes leucomochla Turn) is the true witchety grub of the Aborigines. Witchety grubs (larvae) are found in the roots of Acacia bushes, commonly known as the witchety bush in central Australia. These grubs were the most important insect food of the desert and were a much values staple in the diet of the Aborigines-especially women and children. Men also loved the grubs but would seldom dig them. The grubs were collected by digging up the roots and chopping them up to obtain the grubs within. The grubs can be eaten raw or can be cooked in ashes. Cooking causes the grub to swell and their skins to stiffen. Cooked witchety grubs frequently have been likened in taste to almonds. The larvae are rich in calories, protein, and fat. Ten large grubs are sufficient to provide the daily needs of an adult.
