Acting Techniques for Speakers
by Ed Brodow Do you want to win an Academy Award every time you speak? To deliver each story as though you just thought of it, even though you've told it 500 times? Many successful speakers are using acting techniques to upgrade their platform skills. After all, the speaker's job is the same as the actor's get the audience involved. Actors have to do the same role for months and years. How do they stay fresh? That's what speakers can learn from show biz.
During twelve years as a professional actor, it was my privilege to study with some splendid coaches in New York and Los Angeles: Lee Strasberg, Mary Tarcai, Warren Robertson, David Craig, José Quintero. This acting training has been invaluable in my career as a professional speaker. Here are ten practical secrets from the craft of acting that can help you win an Academy Award on the platform.
Secret Number One: Improvise
Improvisation means making it up as you go along. It means letting go in order to try something new and exciting. Actors use improv to free up their creativity and to discover their comfort level with the script.

Topic Description: In Chapter Four, you have read about the two main techniques actors use to create their characters: "working from the inside" and "working from the outside." Explain what each of these terms means, giving examples. Also, if you were an actor, which would you rather use in the creation of your character(s)?

12. Acting Techniques Syllabus Fall 2001
Performance Work This is an acting class and you will be called upon to perform(hopefully quite frequently). All performed work MUST be memorized.
http://www.rochester.edu/college/eng/theatre/syllabus_Text&Actor-F2002.html
www.rochester.edu/College/ENG/theatre Classes start on Monday, September 9 @ 2pm - 4.40pm
Drama House
Instructor: Nigel Maister SOME PRELIMINARY INFORMATION
Attendance
: Attending class (that means showing up for, yes, the whole 2 hours and 40 minutes) is mandatory (unless your entire household is wiped out by a deranged serial killer, or you have an equally valid excuse). Unexcused absences will severely affect your grade and hamper your work (that means, you may well fail). At times (quite frequently, actually) you may have to rehearse with fellow students outside of class time. Failure to attend those rehearsals will also prejudice your grade (as you will be shafting your classmates who would also like an A). Reading Material : You must purchase, borrow, photocopy, steal or booknap a copy of Hamlet by William Shakespeare (the Arden Edition), and Playing Shakespeare by John Barton. Both texts are available at the bookshop. After you’ve managed to secure a copy, you must actually read these texts. (Hint: read them sooner rather than later. Your life will be less stressful as a result.) Other Material : During the course of the semester you will also have to find a sonnet and, possibly, choose a scene (or part of a scene) from Hamlet.

The Benefits of Acting Well Acting Well will help you understand your consciousness - a subject that baffles most scientists - through metaphors, not scientific experiments and proofs - and thereby extend your analytical powers and free you from the tyrannies of doctors, politicians, healers, teachers, writers, and scientists who enjoy playing God. Acting Well will be your personal trainer, your physical therapist, your psychoanalyst, your private nutritionist, and your taskmaster who pushes you to ever-higher levels of endurance. You'll develop skills you didn't know you had, and polish and prepare them for combat against your stronger demons until daily victory establishes the hero you can be - in the eyes of the world. Acting Well will lead you on a journey through the community, every day for the rest of your life, to sense human realities you never tasted. Those sensual realities are the poetry that translates and unites you with the people and the sounds and inner visions of your neighbors' works; even to those poor people who beg or are too old or young or idiosyncratic to become brothers and sisters who interest you. Acting Well will command you to evangelize.

    'To the Actor'
Michael Aleksandrovich Chekhov was born in St. Petersburg in 1891. Stanislavsky recognized his genius and appointed him as the Head of the Second Moscow Art Theatre, where Chekhov started to develop his innovative acting techniques.
A star in Russia, he was forced to flee to avoid assassination by the new Soviet regime. Chekhov then spent 10 years in Europe - acting, directing and establishing a school where he continued to experiment with his vision of the theatre.
World War II forced him to emigrate to America where he taught many of Hollywood's most famous actors in the 1940s and 50s. He received an Oscar Award Nomination for the role of Dr. Alex Brulov in Hitchcock's 'Spellbound'.
Chekhov's influence is evident in actors as varied as Ingrid Bergman, Lloyd Bridges, Yul Brynner, Gary Cooper, Clint Eastwood, Anthony Hopkins, Marilyn Monroe, Jack Nicholson, Jack Palance and Anthony Quinn.
