Acupressure Acupressure is an ancient practice, closely related to acupuncture. This increasingly popular technique targets specific points that are sensitive bioelectrical impulse centers (nerves). These points can be used to alter the flow of energy that transmits a specific signal to the body. Energy flows within the body along lines known as meridians. There are 14 main meridians, some of which are associated with pain, others with various bodily functions. When treating a symptom, pressure is applied to the appropriate classical acupuncture/acupressure point, located on the associated meridian. The result is a restoration of the energy flow to a proper balance, thereby recovering the body to a healthy state of comfort. Anti-Headache Band

Needle points
Traditional Chinese medicine is based on the belief that health depends on a vital energy, called qi (pronounced "chee"), which is thought to flow through pathways in the body, called meridians. These meridians are like rivers that nourish the body, and an obstruction along one them is like a dam that blocks the natural flow of energy, creating pain and disease. Also important are the opposing forces of yin and yang, which, when balanced, are said to work together with qi to promote physical and mental wellness. The insertion of needles into precise points on the skin is believed to unblock energy flow, balance yin and yang, and restore health. There are more than 2,000 such acupuncture points on the body.
"Acupuncture is becoming increasingly popular with medical patients in Western countries as a way to control pain and relieve certain other symptoms, such as the nausea caused by chemotherapy."
Western scientists have found it hard to study meridians, since they don't exactly correspond to nerve or blood circulation pathways. As a result, some don't believe that meridians exist at all. Nevertheless, several studies have found that acupuncture used along with mainstream medicine can have real benefits, such as helping to relieve pain and reduce the nausea and vomiting of chemotherapy. One theory is that acupuncture stimulates the production of endorphins, chemicals in the body that are natural pain-relievers. However, there is no evidence that acupuncture alone is effective for treating or preventing cancer.

What kind of impact does it have on your day to day living? Shouldn't your health, energy level, ability to handle stress, and quality of life be your utmost priority? We think it should.
Our goal at the Delmar Wellness Center is to help our patients attain true health by using holistic, non-invasive therapeutic approaches. By holistic, we're referring to treating the body as a whole, not as fragmented parts. Holistic healing promotes optimum health and well-being, not just the treatment of symptoms. The goal in holistic medicine is not to separately "fix" the body's parts; it is to help maximize the body's natural healing mechanisms and immune system. The body was designed to heal itself and function in a balanced state, but due to environmental toxicities, underlying weaknesses, stress, viruses, etc., it may sometimes need help to regain its natural balance.
The Delmar Wellness Center can help patients integrate both conventional (from other physicians) and complementary therapies. An example of this is the use of medicinal herbs with prescription medications. We develop uniquely, individual treatment plans based on each person's health care needs and provide ongoing support to patients as they encounter life changes. A focus is placed on a wellness-oriented lifestyle in order to promote both short-term and long-term health care goals. This partnership approach requires both commitment and responsibilities on the part of the doctor and patient, but the pay-off is great - being and feeling your best - adding to the quality and duration of your life.

What You Can Expect
Health Benefits ... Cautions What Is It? Acupressure is a type of bodywork that involves pressing specific points on the body with the fingers, knuckles, and palms (and sometimes the elbows and feet) to relieve pain, reduce stress, and promote general good health. Developed in China some 5,000 years ago, perhaps out of the natural human instinct to hold or rub a place on the body that hurts, acupressure is part of the holistic system of traditional chinese medicine (TCM) that also includes acupuncture. (Interestingly, the use of acupressure predates acupuncture by some 2,500 years.) In the United States acupressure is primarily used to relieve pain, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being. In China, the technique is used more like first-aid: The Chinese typically practice it on themselves or on family members to treat everyday ailments such as colds, headaches, sore muscles, and hangovers. Specialists are consulted for more complicated problems. While many people prefer to go to a trained therapist to get acupressure treatments, the techniques, once learned, can be performed on oneself or by a friend.

What is acupressure?
To traditionalists, acupressure may sound unusual. But the ancient Chinese technique of acupressure can relieve pain by stimulating the meridian points in your body. Acupressure is similar to acupuncture, except no needles are used. Acupressure utilizes pressure from fingers and hands. Acupressure stimulates the meridian points to reduce muscle tension and pain. Activating pressure points encourages the brain to release natural pain killers called endorphins. Endorphins go directly to the places you need pain to be released and help you lose your tension. To properly lose the tension, put your thumbs, knuckles or fingers at the pressure point and press down firmly and tightly. Do this for about two minutes. After you remove your hands from the point, take a few deep, slow breaths. Here are some ways you can use acupressure to relieve your pain. bodyOffer(7803) ? Back Pain. Stand up straight and put your hands on your waist. Place your fingers around the front of your waist and your thumbs around back. Feel for stringy muscles running along the spine. Press that spot in with one hand and use your other thumb and fingers to press the top of your eye sockets where they meet your nose.
