I gave her some words of encouragement and told her that she might do better than she thought she would. I'm glad I encouraged her. She ended the course reading 18,000 words per minute. While it's not uncommon for children to attain such reading speeds, I've only had one adult student in my life who could go faster.
Last night I just finished talking to my friend, Troy, who teaches school (in fact, the charter school that he taught at for the past two years has 50% of the students DIAGNOSED with Attention Deficit Disorder [ADD]). He and I have the same hobby: We teach children to speed read. It was nice to find out that Troy has noticed the same pattern that I have noticed in our speed reading students: Some "learning disabled" people are EXTREMELY gifted when it comes to speed reading.
Specifically, the children who have ADD and Dyslexia tend to catch on to speed reading better than most other children, based on what I have seen in my speed reading classes. Recently, new evidence had come forward that verifies what Troy and I have discovered on our own.

Teaching Styles: Christian Secular Unschooling Dyslexia is not just mixing up letters
Peggy M. Wilber, M.Ed., author of Reading Rescue 1 - 2 - 3 says, "Contrary to what many people think, dyslexia is not just mixing up letters d and b . (That, by the way, is a common trait of children up through third grade and is not the major tool for diagnosing dyslexia.) Dyslexia is defined as having a "deficit in auditory and language skills. Researchers know that 95 percent of all children who receive proper instruction—a combination of auditory training, phonic instruction, and application of phonics by reading lots of printed materials such as books and magazines—become able to read at grade level. This means that only a small percentage of children in America truly suffer from dyslexia."

Ten to 15% of the US school population has dyslexia. Dyslexics have an inherited neurological difference, resulting in language, perception, processing, and attention concentration differences. Yet only 5% of them are ever properly diagnosed and given appropriate help, so that over 85% of adult illiterates are dyslexic. This lack of literacy limits their ability to become successful, productive adults, find jobs, or function independently within their communities. Yet, with the proper recognition and intervention, dyslexics become successful individuals using their talents and skills to enrich our society. Dyslexia is a language disability, not a reading disability, so not only does it affect the ability to learn to read, write, and spell by conventional methods, it affects the ability to communicate in more subtle ways. Dyslexics have processing, perception, and attention/concentration problems. The majority of ADD individuals are also dyslexic. Learning to read can be a problem for dyslexic/ADD individuals.

Success Stories H.E.L.P. for Dyslexic Docs
By Bill Gardner, Staff Writer
From The Parthenon , Marshall University, Huntington, W.V., Thursday, July 1, 1993 One day in 1985 the Dean of the Medical School called Dr. Barbara P. Guyer, director of Marshall's H.E.L.P. program, to tell her one of his students wasn't doing very well in medical school. It's not uncommon for some people to do poorly in medical school, but he told Guyer there was something different about this one. The student has a 4.0 grade point average in college, and he had been working very hard in medical school. The dean thought the student might have dyslexia, which would impair the student's ability to understand what he read. "I had never thought about anybody in medical school having a learning disability before," Guyer said. "When we tested him he has an I.Q. level well into the genius range, and he was reading on a beginning high school level." "He'd always known he was different. Although he was an honor student, he said he always had to work much harder than his peers," Guyer said.
