There are many reasons for school failure, but a common one is a specific learning disability. Children with learning disabilities usually have a normal range of intelligence. They try very hard to follow instructions, concentrate, and "be good" at home and in school. Yet, despite this effort, he or she is not mastering school tasks and falls behind. INFORMATION ABOUT COMMON READING DISABILITIES
There are many myths about learning and reading disabilities. One is that individuals with such disabilities are not as intelligent as people who do not suffer from them. This idea is entirely untrue. Like everyone else, people with disabilities span over a range of intelligences. A second common myth about reading disabilities, in particular, is that individuals who have difficulty with reading should only be taught skills. This teaching approach works against the development of reading fluency, and it disables students even further. Even students with reading disabilities can read and can enjoy reading. They simply read differently. Understanding a little more about how such students read and learn differently can help people to overcome myths about such disabilities and can ensure that every student receives the right to read. Generally, disabilities affect a person's perceptions and interpretations of what they see and/or hear, and they may interfere with certain information links within the brain. People with disabilities can have difficulties using language, paying attention, acting appropriately in social situations and coordinating their bodies' movements. Each of these disorders affects a student's interaction with language and can therefore severely affect a student's self-esteem regarding his or her use of language. The following statements represent the most common and persistent MYTHS about dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, learning disabilities, diagnosis and educational interventions. Myths About Dyslexia
    • Dyslexia does not exist. True dyslexia is rare (5% or less). Dyslexia is a "catch all" term. There is no way to truly diagnose dyslexia. Dyslexia cannot be diagnosed until a child is 8 to 11 years old. Many children who experience reading and writing problems in Kindergarten through 3rd grade will outgrow them. These children are developmentally delayed. Repeating a grade will often help children gain skills because it allows them to mature. Dyslexia is a visual problem. Dyslexic children see things backwards. Children outgrow dyslexia. Dyslexia only affects children who speak English. Dyslexia affects four times more boys than girls. All children who reverse b's and d's, or p's and q's, have dyslexia. If a child does not mirror write or reverse letters and numbers, he/she does not have dyslexia. Some children have mild dyslexia.

Bringing up a dyslexic child is quite a challenge . . . Mary ELizabeth Harvell relates the history of some of the difficulties she went through.
Some of the learning disabilities caused by dyslexia that I have noticed in our 8-year old son are: difficulties with sounds, reading fluently, spelling, printing, skipping lines while reading, acting out/frustrated, failing grades, and lack of attention/staying focused. Below is a little history: When my son was 18 months old, I noticed secretion from his left ear. Little did we realize this would be the first of many ear infections. At two different times, the infections were so severe that the left eardrum ruptured. My son, being the child that he is, never complained about pain. However, that was not true if he didn't have a bowl of cereal in front of him the minute his eye graced the morning sunlight! Read on WHERE CAN I FIND A TEST FOR DYSLEXIA?
