I am not saying one must never use Ritalin. When one has a headache Tylenol is often quite helpful, but most people realize that it is not a cure and if their headache becomes chronic they look for more definitive ways of diagnosing and treating it. In rare cases, when we cant find the cause of the headaches and a better treatment, we resort to taking Tylenol all the time. However, I’m sure nobody would be so stupid as to think that that is the optimal situation. Why then do we use this approach with ADD/ADHD-labeled children? In my opinion, Ritalin and related drugs must be the choice of last resort. What I want to share, is some thoughts of how the "disorder" might possibly be avoided. One of the first things to look at when dealing with a child who demonstrates a short attention span and/or hyperactivity, is the television. It is my opinion that this is one of the most dangerous pieces of furniture in the house. While there are some very valuable shows being offered on public TV, it seems that most of my patients are spending their viewing time watching commercial programs. I think such programming conditions children to have short attention span. It seems that almost all of it is just a series of never-ending bright colors, loud noises and camera gyrations. If you don't know what I’m talking about, take a few minutes out of your schedule and watch TV. Be sure you stay in the room for the commercials, so you can see how incredibly "stimulating" they have become. It’s little wonder that children with ADD will frequently be capable of watching hours of TV, even though they can’t sit still for a whole meal.

For Parents
As a parent of a child with learning disabilities, ADD or ADHD, I'm sure you're experiencing a wide gamut of emotions. The most common ones we hear are:
  • frustration desperation anger dismay shame lack of peace wanting to escape (from the situation)
The Sharper Minds program has been very successful in bringing families peace, happiness and a sense of pride. How? By addressing the root cause of learning disabilities! The lack of adequate neural "wiring" in the brain. The methodology is simple. The Sharper Minds program provides whole brain stimulus, causing deficient areas to grow the appropriate neural pathways. The result? Children and adults can perform at their full innate intelligence level. No longer are they hyper or unable to focus. No longer are they frustrated with school or their families. When the root cause is dealt with, happiness, peace and a better sense of self worth are all manifested. Generally if a child is on a psychostimulant medication such as Ritalin

A Horror Story with a Happy Ending
This email arrived last month, and with the Mum's permission it has been reprinted as it may help you find answers. "My son's last school was hell on earth, to put it mildly. The principal had stated to me "why do you fight for your kids, they're nothing but trouble makers."
When the youngest, Jakeadhd, was trying new meds and a new school, he had behavior problems. He ended up getting away from special ed teacher and hitting/kicking principal. This caused them to call police as my husband and I were out of town shopping. The police were never told he was special needs, the school did NOT give police his meds, and they put him into temporary foster care til we got home. This happened around ten in the morning and we didnt get home til around two thirty.
My son had charges pressed against him by the school/principal. The court appointed lawyer thought he was just a brat til I contacted him to tell of his adhd. Then I had to do all the calling and getting information to the lawyer. We ended up with Jake in a diversionary program. It still cost us hundreds of dollars.

Think video games are bad for your children? Now, a Utah Psychologist is using video games to help kids in amazing ways. Science Specialist Ed Yeates shows you how hyperactive children who might otherwise be treated with drugs are actually learning to control their brain waves and change their moodwhile they play. Ed Yeates Report on Mind Games Pt. 1 Ed Yeates Report on Mind Games Pt. 2
Additional Information Using Neurofeedback to Treat ADD/ADHD:
Using neurofeedback to treat ADD/ADHD is somewhat controversial. Some doctors caution that neurofeedback should not be considered a "panacea" for people who suffer from ADD/ADHD. In severe cases especially, they say, medication is the best treatment, or perhaps medication in conjunction with neurofeedback. Those who have tested neurofeedback say 30 - 40 percent of patients were able to discontinue use of medication. From Steven A. Szykula, Ph.D.: "The study of EEG biofeedback to treat ADD/ADHD actually had its start in the study and treatment of epilepsy. It has long been known that epileptics have differences in their brain waves. As early as 1968, published studies demonstrated that cats and humans could be trained to alter their brain waves. Furthermore, training to reduce slow-waves and increase certain other brain waves actually reduced seizures in both animals and humans." Three pioneering researchers then turned attention to applying EEG biofeedback to ADD/ADHD. Over a fifteen year period, they reported results including:
