Addison's disease is a chronic and insufficient functioning of the outer layer of the adrenal gland.. In former times Addison's disease was mainly caused by tuberculosis (TB). The most noticeable symptoms are among others fatigue and muscular weakness, skin coloration (bronzed skin), loss of weight, nausea and vomiting and low blood pressure. One very specific symptom is the craving and need for salt or salty foods!weakness with undue fatigue. There is usually weight loss, anorexia, pigmentation of the skin (especially at pressure points and regions of previous injury), or vitiligo, abdominal pain, vomiting, and occasionally diarrhea.

Adrenal Gland Underactive. addisons disease is categorized by adrenal glandsnot producing enough corticosteroids. addisons disease can be fatal.
    http://www.yogacards.com/adrenal_gland_information.html
    Adrenal Gland Problems
There are two adrenal glands in our body. They are situated above the kidneys and consist of an inner part (medulla) and outer part (cortex). The inner part secretes hormones that affect many aspects of the sympathetic nervous system. The outer part plays an important role in the potassium and salt levels in our body. Both inner and outer parts of the adrenal gland affect our blood pressure. Some less serious problems can be caused by poor diet and lifestyle.
If the adrenals are not functioning correctly the cause could be oustide the gland. For instance the hypothalamus or pituitary failing to produce hormones that control the adrenal glands. A problem inside the adrenal gland could be caused by some kind of disease or infection in or around the gland. In many cases the actual cause is unknown but we suspect it may be an autoimmune response. Major problems can occur when the adrenal glands produce too much or too little hormone. If you have had part or all of your adrenal glands removed you will need to be medicated by modern medicine. These pages will help make the amount you need as small as possible. We have created a sequence that moves blood to the pituitary and causes lots of movement around the adrenal glands. The sequence is designed to move fluids around the body completely without too much strain on the muscles. The sequence may be beneficial to underactive adrenal gland problems because it stimulates underactive adrenal glands while giving them a gentle massage and aiding the distribution of hormone being release from them.

    Background
My name is Glenn Kardel. I have polyglandular autoimmune syndrome type II, frequently referred to as Schmidt's syndrome. The classic manifestations of this syndrome are adrenal insufficiency plus autoimmune thyroid disease and/or insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. I have all three of the above conditions: Addison's disease , hypothyroidism, and type I diabetes.
Addisons and hypothyroidism are treated with oral hormone replacement medications. Type I diabetes is the most serious and difficult to control of the three conditions. Treatment usually involves balancing insulin therapy administered through injections or a pump, diet, and exercise with the goal of maintaining normal blood sugar levels.
After I was diagnosed with Addisons and started taking hydrocortisone, I started to have highly variable blood sugars. I began to have sugars in the 300's and also frequent hypoglycemic episodes. I started searching for information about the interaction between Addisons and diabetes or any special treatment strategies related to the two conditions and was surprised to find almost nothing.
Given the adverse and potentially dangerous effect Addisons has on diabetes, this information should be explicitly stated and available to people with Addisons and diabetes. This website is my attempt to provide information on this subject and hopefully connect with others who have useful information about Addisons and diabetes.

    Addison's Disease Revisited
    By: Linda Aronson
Beardie Bulletin, November 1995 This year a paper in the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association reported a similar familial relationship in four Leonbergers with Addison's disease, two of which were also hypothyroid. Eight littermates of one of the dogs died as neonates of undetermined causes. The data presented here are some of that which I have collected on Beardies. (NOTE: You will need to obtain a copy of the bulletin for the 3 figures showing families of affected dogs. I was unable to reproduce them for the health web page. E Sell). As the notes show, there are a great many other affected dogs which are related to those depicted which also had the disease. The data presented here are over six years old. Of the Beardies checked for hypothyridism all have been found to have that condition concurrently with their Addison's disease, which is a condition known as Schmidt's disease in humans. I think that these data, with the multigenerational cases as well as litters with multiple affecteds are convincing that in Beardies as in other dog breeds as well as in humans, Addison's disease has a definite genetic component. Addison's disease is multifactorial however. In order for an animal with an inherited predisposition to develop the disease its immune system must experience some kind of stress. Some of the stressors which have been implicated in disease expression include repeated multivalent vaccinations (vaccines against several disease in one shot), disease, drugs, or chemicals in the food or environment. Other stressors have yet to be identified. It is interesting that each breed seems to have a particular autoimmune disease to which it is most susceptible (beyond hypothyroidism, which is the number one autoimmune disease in all breeds).
