    Winter Olympic Games:
The purpose of this activity is to study and follow a Winter Olympic event as it takes place during the Olympics. Students will do research to learn about that event, watch the events on TV and follow them on the Web. At the end, a poster will be created that shares with the class what has been learned about that sport and how that sport evolved at those particular Olympics.
Create A Game: An athletic event is created complete with rules and regulations. With partners, students develop a new indoor or outdoor game that incorporates three or more exercise elements like stretching and flexibility, balance, conflict resolution, aerobic exercise, eye-hand coordination and teamwork. Students create a PowerPoint presentation on the athletic event.
Interactive Sports Guide: In this activity students create an interactive sports guide using PowerPoint

    ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY SUGGESTED LESSON PLANS
Investigation: How does well water compare to city water in terms of bacterial analysis?
PUBLIC DRINKING WATER CONTAMINATED! This headline has appeared in various forms across the United States. There is an increasing concern that the drinking water in the United States is not as healthy as most of us would like to believe. Approximately 1/4 of all the people on this planet do not have access to safe drinking water. In this activity you will compare the bacteria amounts in drinking water from local wells and city water.
    Procedure
    STEP 1:
Collect water samples from area wells and the city water supply in sterile collecting bottles.

    STEP 2:
Label the Petrifilm plates at the top with your name, date, and water source.

    STEP 3:
Add 1ml. of sample to the center of the Petrifilm. (Do not raise the cover of the Petrifilm until ready to plate the sample.)

    STEP 4:
For the aerobic bacteria, the cover is dropped not rolled. For the E. coli and Coliform Bacteria carefully roll down the top. Avoid capturing the air bubbles between the film and the cover sheet of the petrifilm.

    STEP 5:
Carefully spread the sample using the spreader (make sure and use the correct side) by gently presssing the center of the spreader to distribute the inoculum over the circular area.

IDEAS FOR TRADITIONAL GAMES (Grades 3-8) You should be able to adapt the games below for snowy conditions and the use of snowshoes:
    • Softball - Paint the ball a dark color for better visibility. Flag Football - Use long flags so the kids don't step on each other. Volleyball - Use a beach ball to avoid injury to cold hands. Flying Disk Tag - Run with the disk until tagged, then throw it. Swedish Kickball - With a throw instead of kick. Rugby Tag - Two teams, touch only. Flying Disk Golf - Use bright colored hoops for the holes. Dodge Ball - Use a large playing field and ball. Scavenger Hunt - Have teams find hidden markers.
    Back To Index
FOUR CORNER ELIMINATION (Grades 3-8) Equipment needed:
    • Playing field divided into four squares (large) Four different objects (four of each) Long Rip Flags
Directions: Divide children into four teams. The goal of each team is to raid the other corners and take one different item from each corner. The team that captures one of each item wins the game. Defenders cannot hold objects. If a players flag gets ripped off, the player must take the flag and immediately exit the playing field. The player may then jog around the playing field and enter back into his or her team square. Variations: The team with the most objects wins the game. The team with all the same objects from another team wins. Any team that loses all their objects is declared dead and must stop playing.

Lesson Plans are used to insure a smooth flowing class and sequence of learning for the kids. Lesson plans also help to prepare the teacher for the class by reviewing the theme, equipment that will be needed for class, and what skills the kid's should be learning during the class. Lesson plans can be posted at the school so that parents can review what was covered in the class. Lesson plans are written for the following age groups of kids: Jumping Bunnies™
    18 months to three years.
This is a parent and toddler tumbling class. Children enjoy motor development and rhythmic activities, group games and lots of exploration. Parents will enjoy 45 minutes of uninterrupted play with their child in a group setting. A great way for new parents to meet other parents in the community. Jumping Bunnies™ lesson plans are written for exploration and introducing family fitness activities early in a child's life. Lesson plans are written to introduce songs and finger plays that children can enjoy with their parents. Giggle Bugs™
    Three to five years.

Objective Students will apply their knowledge of scatter plots to discover the correlation between heartbeats per minute before and after aerobic exercise. Overview of the Lesson Materials Each Group:
    • Sheet of graph paper
    • Colored pencil
    • Colored dot sticker (one per student)
    • Piece of uncooked vermicelli spaghetti
    • One Ruler
    Per Class:
    • Guest Speaker (Aerobic Instructor)
    • Poster Graph
    • Stopwatch
    • Music
Procedure Begin the lesson by asking students to recall some facts about scatter plots. Students should share, in small groups and then in full class discussion, such things as correlation, outliers, and line of best fit. (See Mathematically Speaking...) Inform students that they are going to put their knowledge of scatter plots to practical use. Schedule an aerobic instructor to be a guest speaker. This person should be prepared to share specific information about the heart and how it operates. In the video, the speaker informs the students that the heart is the most important muscle in the body. It is a pump and is responsible for delivering oxygen upon demand, through the blood, to the tissues. At rest, about 5 liters of blood flow through the heart per minute. When exercising, there is an apparent increase in demand for oxygen, at which time approximately 20 liters of blood per minute flow through the heart. There are two easily accessible strong pulse points. They are the carotid artery and the radial artery. To find the carotid artery, place you index and middle finger just below the angle of the jaw. The pulsation felt will be that of the carotid artery. To find the radial artery, place your finger on your thumb and slide it up, just above the wrist and gently press. The pulsation felt here is that of the radial artery.

Vickers Time Allotment Two 40-minutes classes Overview The human body is a complex anatomical system. During aerobic activity the cardiovascular system supplies oxygen to working muscles and carries the waste product, carbon dioxide, away. The video will provide a visual image of the heart pumping an oxygen-enriched blood supply through arteries to the muscles in use during exercise. Students will participate in activities (e.g., finding their resting heart rate) to provide a benchmark of their understanding of how active muscles need oxygen as fuel. Students will select aerobic activities, perform fitness tests on their classmates, record the data on a handout sheet, and analyze this information to better understand the importance of a strong and healthy heart.
