Athletics is an integral part of a student's Middle School experience. Each child is required to participate in the athletic program, which consists of team membership at appropriate skill levels. The program stresses teamwork, self-discipline and good sportsmanship while emphasizing continued skill development. Welcome to the Kent Denver School's Athletics, Health and Wellness Department The athletic program at Kent Denver is designed to provide a forum for enjoyable individual health and wellness and interscholastic sports participation. The program develops an awareness of one's own abilities as an individual and in relation to peers. This is achieved through skill instruction and appreciation of those skills through classes, practices, and competition. Athletics encourage participation, commitment, a sense of responsibility, good sportsmanship, teamwork, physical awareness, self-discipline, leadership, and a competitive spirit. A wide variety of programs is offered; students may continue with familiar sports or learn a new one. Through this wide variety of options, each student has the opportunity to have a successful and positive experience. The athletic program provides a splendid environment and opportunity for student/teacher association outside the classroom. Coaches contribute to the growth of student attitudes and maturity. Interscholastic Participation Philosophy Participation in games is of great importance. Games are scheduled at many levels in order for the largest number of participants to gain experience. Participation depends on fitness, ability, attitude, effort, knowledge of fundamentals, and commitment as demonstrated by each individual in practice and previous games.

The Exeter campus features a complex of athletic facilities that accommodate a wide range of sports. Facilities include five basketball courts, two swimming pools, 15 squash courts, and a well-equipped weight training room. Also available are a 1/10-mile indoor track, a dance studio, and a wrestling room. You have access as well to over 300 acres of school grounds for outdoor sports. Among outdoor facilities are a 400-meter all-weather track, 23 clay and all-weather tennis courts, cross-country trails, five baseball and softball diamonds, and a number of fields for football, field hockey, lacrosse, and soccer.
A summer student from a Navajo reservation in Arizona said, "Where I come from squash is a noun or a verb, not a sport." At Exeter he was able to try sports he had never seen played before and to enjoy the camaraderie of competing on a team. Athletics is an important part of the summer experience that enables you to meet people outside your dorms and classes. We offer more than 15 different sports in two sessions, allowing you to sign up for two sports in the course of the summer. Physical education classes meet four times a week in the afternoon and are required for all residential students.
In many sports, we group students by skill level. This approach allows beginners to learn together and more advanced players to play against each other. You have regular opportunities to compete against teams organized among players in your sport. Our physical education teachers are professionals, many of whom teach at Exeter during the year. They provide expert instruction in their sports along with encouragement and support. We urge all students to take advantage of the opportunity to try a new sport during summer school.

Athletics/Activities We believe in the old adage that a healthy body produces a healthy mind. Each student is required to take an athletic activity each quarter of the school year. Course offerings include: weight lifting; aerobics; competitive indoor sports, such as basketball, floor hockey, volleyball, skateboarding, and many others. Some outdoor campus recreational sports include: swimming, badminton, tetherball, mountain biking, snowboarding, sledding, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, and many others. Weekend activities supplement regular athletic classes and include camping trips to White Sands, mountaineering on Pecos Baldy, exploration of Bandelier National Monument and other New Mexico sites. Trips to the Chavez Community Center in Santa Fe also provides the students with the option of engaging in activities such as swimming, ice-skating, basketball, weight lifting, and cardio fitness. The Alpine Leadership Program (ALPS) is our challenge-by-choice outdoor education program. Twice during the year, all regular scheduling is set aside. During ALPS Week in the fall, students may sign up for half-day clinics on campus, which include high and low ropes “Challenge Course” elements, orienteering, trout fishing and camping skills. They may also sign up for extended outings, which include both backpacking and horse packing. During ALPS Weekend in the spring, all students use their skills to go on outings or participate in on campus clinics and more ropes course “challenge” events.

THE SPORTING LIFE
Oakwood's Physical Education Program emphasizes participation. Several levels of interscholastic sports opportunities allow all students to enjoy the excitement, discipline and camaraderie of team play. We are members of the Hudson Valley Athletic League and the Western New England Preparatory School Athletic Association. All students are required to participate in one team sport. Most of our students, however, choose to participate on teams all three trimesters. Again, there are levels appropriate for all students allowing those who are particularly talented in athletics and those who have never played on a team to share equally. All athletic activities, including lifetime sports, intramural teams and interscholastic options meet after classes each day in an afternoon sports period. The following is a typical list of activities offered.

The majority of our students seek activities outside the classroom in student organizations, intramural sports, theater, band, student government, or residence hall functions. Outdoor enthusiasts will want to take note that Ohio University is located in the heart of Ohio's Hocking Hills region, and is surrounded by several state parks and the Wayne National Forest. Organizations
More than 350 organizations are registered annually with the Office of Student Activities. Many of these are clubs that directly relate to a major, while others involve religious or political interests, sports, community service, or honoraries. Athletics (Varsity Sports)
Ohio University is an NCAA Division I school and is also a member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The university supports 20 teams on the varsity level. If you are interested in participating in varsity-level athletics at Ohio University, please let your high school coach know early in your senior year. You will need to meet all NCAA qualifications as well as university admission requirements to play at the varsity level. Club Sports
Club sports provide a way for students to enjoy an exciting level of athletic competition without having to meet NCAA requirements. Club teams still compete with other colleges and universities, but without the sanction of the NCAA. Each club sport is organized and run by students under the guidance of the Office of Campus Recreation.
