Physical Education : Upper School The NCS Physical Education Department has as its stated objectives the promotion of the physical, mental and social growth of its students through the enjoyment of varied activities which encourage a sense of fair play, the development of muscular strength and motor skills. The Physical Education Program seeks:
  • to create opportunities to develop loyalty, responsibility, cooperation, self-confidence, sociability, initiative, self-direction and a sense of belonging to develop body awareness so that activities become controlled and enjoyable to provide, through activity, a healthy release for emotional and physical tension to develop sufficient strength, coordination and endurance to perform daily tasks successfully and to be prepared to meet stressful situations to awaken a long-term interest in recreative and perhaps competitive activities and body conditioning.
Students must take a full year of Physical Education in grades 9-11 and one quarter/season in grade 12. A junior who has received a passing grade in all previous Physical Education courses may elect to take only three quarters of Physical Education in grade 11, but she will then be required to take two quarters in grade 12. The Physical Education requirement must be completed by the end of the third quarter in grade 12 unless approved by the Director of Athletics and Physical Education . Students are required to attend at least 75% of the total classes for the quarter in order to receive a passing grade.

http://www.bwl.org/athletics/athletics.html
The goals of the Physical Education Program at BWL are to develop self confidence and team cooperation through participation in group activities. Emphasis is placed on developing physical fitness and positive social guidance. It is our hope that the self esteem and spirit of good sportsmanship that students gain in the Physical Education Department will affect their success in all aspects of school life while preparing them to be productive members of our society. Physical Education classes are taught in different facilities depending upon the grade level. Students have access to the gymnasium and auditorium at the Birch Wathen Lenox School as well as the gymnasium at Sokol and the pool at the Aqua Center. The physical education staff includes five full time teachers. At least two teachers are present during Physical Education classes. The Lower School (grades K-5) Kindergarten through third grade participates in physical education four times a week, while fourth and fifth grades have physical education three times a week. As students progress through the lower school, each grade focuses upon specific skills that are cumulative. Kindergarten focuses upon kinesthetic skills such as increasing eye/hand coordination. First and second graders take these skills and work on team cooperation while third, fourth and fifth graders will focus upon team games and sports such as soccer, volleball, team handball, softball and badminton. In addition, fourth and fifth grade students participate in a swimming program at the Asphalt Green Aquatic Center.

US Athletics Athletics at the Harker School has always been an important part of the great education received here. For years the Middle School athletic program has been recognized as one of the most successful sports programs in the area. A great many sports and teams are offered in grades four through eight with an emphasis on skill development, character building and competitive challenges. Thus Harker offers a sport and a level appropriate for all skill levels. Beginning in the 4th grade, students can participate in volleyball, flag football, soccer, basketball, swimming and softball. Once in 6th grade, teams are grouped by skill level, and Harker's "no cut" policy guarantees playing time for everybody. In Middle School tennis is added to the sports' choices available to students. It is possible for a student to participate in up to five different sports in a single school year. Practices are held daily after school, and in some sports, such as basketball, up to 17 teams can be in action. Harker hosts tournaments in both volleyball and basketball and holds an annual 8th grade basketball invitational which fields some great action! The Eagle athletes compete with both public and private schools in the South Bay area.
