The instructional programs are designed to provide students with the opportunity to acquire content knowledge and skills related to physical activity, fitness/wellness, sport and outdoor recreational pursuits. They involve both credit and non-credit bearing opportunities. The instructional program includes four major components: Credit-bearing courses, which provide course work that leads to a minor in sports studies and exercise science. Course concentrations include the study of physical activity and sport through sociological, psychological and philosophical perspectives; sport medicine; outdoor education; fitness/wellness; and coaching certification for public school athletics. Students also have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in various student leadership and internship opportunities available within the campus community. Non-credit-bearing courses include instructional classroom programs focused on health-related topics of fitness and wellness such as nutrition, cardiac-risk assessment and stress management. Toni Poulsen
Toni Poulsen begins her second volleyball season at Lassen Community College with enthusiasm and anticipation. Poulsen has been with Lassen College since 1988, beginning as a physical education instructor teaching high/low impact aerobics, step aerobics, weight training, water aerobics, lap swimming, and senior fitness classes. Poulsen is an avid golfer, winning Ace of the Year in 1998. Along with being a fitness guru, Poulsen has coached youth sports in Lassen County. When Lassen faced a staffing shortage summer 1999, Poulsen joined the college as full-time faculty, adding coaching to her list of responsibilities. When asked to take over the volleyball position last year, Poulsen eagerly began to learn everything she could about the sport, and implemented a plan to begin the task. Within one year, Poulsen has successfully completed a season, implemented volleyball classes back into the college curriculum, and has helped the Lassen Volleyball Club by providing valuable gym time, assistance from Lady Cougar athletes, and occasional coaching. Plans are underway to work with the City of Susanville to implement a volleyball city league. Since Poulsen did not have the opportunity to play volleyball in high school, it is her goal to see that every child knows about volleyball and has the opportunity to play the sport.

Physical Education Requirements
All students in grades nine and ten are required to participate in physical education classes or on an athletic team during each trimester. Students in grade eleven take two trimesters of physical education or athletics. Alternative arrangements, such as a deferral, may be granted to a student who has scheduling conflicts or to juniors who intend to continue with an interscholastic team during the senior year.
Lifetime Activities Conditioning Students in this one-trimester course participate in an organized, systematic program of weight training three times per week as well as a rigorous running, jumping and flexibility regime twice per week. Regular fitness testing is incorporated in an effort to give students feedback on their progress in all areas of fitness (strength, flexibility, speed, explosive power, endurance). Grades nine-twelve). Athletic Teams
Coaches have the responsibility at all levels to work toward the highest level of achievement possible both for the team and for each individual player.

Physical Education Program WELCOME to our new Physical Education web page! We welcome this opportunity to share on-going information about the wide range of exciting activities that take place in our daily PE program. As you have probably noticed, there is a separate website for “Athletics.” The terms “Athletics” and “Physical Education” apply to two different programs at Norwood School. Physical Education (PE) refers to the instructional class period offered four to five days each week to every student in grades K-6, as well as to the Summit Program offered to 7th and 8th graders who choose not to participate in athletics. PE places a strong emphasis upon physical fitness, developmental movement activities, cooperative teamwork, sportsmanship, and fundamental sports skills. PE Department members include director Jane Martens, and faculty members Wayne Herninko, Dan Perrotta, Anne Weaver, and Kristen Cool. Athletics refers to our interscholastic competitive sports teams. For 5th and 6th graders, this is an optional, after-school program offered several days each week. For 7th and 8th graders, team practices are part of the official school day, and take the place of Physical Education classes. Athletic Director (A.D.) Anne Weaver and Assistant A.D. Dan Perrotta administer the Athletic program.

AEROBICS Aerobics is a fun and energetic sport providing students with flexibility, strength, power, co-ordination and balance skills. Approximately thirty students are selected to make up junior and senior teams to compete at the Milo Schoolaerobics State Championships in May. Prior to the competition the students are required to learn choreographed routines which include compulsory skills. Emphasis in aerobics is placed upon participation, co-operation, enjoyment, enhanced skill levels, self-esteem and confidence. ATHLETICS Athletics at Our Lady of Mercy College caters for the needs and interests of all students and focuses on personal best performances rather solely on winning. Therefore all students can be successful by doing their personal best. Students have the opportunity to join the athletics squad in semester one to represent the College at three different competitions organised by the Secondary Catholic Schools Association, the Mercy Schools Association and the GSSA. This sport emphasises the importance of school and team spirit and enables students to interact with students of all year levels. BASKETBALL Basketball teams are selected to represent the College at the Secondary Catholic Schools competition, and two of the four teams also compete in the Catholic All Schools State Championships. This sport gives the students the opportunity to improve their hand-eye co-ordination and to develop confidence to execute basketball skills in a competitive situation. Development as a responsible team member and sportsmanship are of a prime importance in basketball at the College.
