Mobility is a fundamental need in a modern society and efficient transport systems are a prerequisite for our country's socio-economic development and for citizens' prosperity. New technology must contribute to making transport more energy-conserving and more environmentally compatible. Telematics can help make existing roads and railways more efficient. It also makes for better networking of different transport systems so that every traveller can choose the optimum combination of private car and public transport. Technologies and organizational forms for this networking are demonstrated in five major lead projects on mobility in conurbations. A collaborative project entitled " Low-noise traffic " aims at a significant reduction of noise.
Aerospace research
Aerospace research is a European task. Two thirds of the German space budget goes to the European Space Agency ESA as German contribution. Scientific excellence, technology development and industrial applicability are the yardsticks for the funding of space projects. Successful technology transfer from space research is gaining increasing significance. Funding for SMEs with clear market prospects and for self-sustaining industrial development is a primary goal. Users of space technologies are increasingly being included in the design and funding of projects.

Germany is among the leaders in basic scientific research not only because it has excellent scientists but also because it has a good research infrastructure with large-scale research equipment. The responsibilities of Directorate-General 4 "Research; Transport, Aerospace Research" include preserving and strengthening the science base. The instruments available for addressing this task are the modern facilities of eight national research centres as well as the European research centres CERN, ESRF, ESO and ILL. An additional instrument is project support, which covers the areas of physics, astrophysics, astroparticle physics and mathematics. Securing mobility, avoiding congestion, easing the burden on the environment and avoiding traffic noise – these are requirements to be met by a transport concept for the future. Transport research will contribute to solving these problems. Mobility in conurbations is to be optimized by networking all available means of transport and by making public transport more attractive. Testing and demonstration activities are already under way in some cities. A collaborative project on low-noise traffic studies the scientific and technological prerequisites for reducing traffic noise.

Aerospace Manufacturing Technology Centre
Background: The Canadian aerospace industry The Canadian aerospace industry is a jobs and growth success story. It ranks fifth in the world, with the potential to reach fourth within the next year. Innovation is the key to reaching that goal. Research and development drive the aerospace industry to meet ever-increasing demands from clients and regulators to reduce costs, increase performance, extend aircraft life, minimize environmental impacts, and improve safety. NRC has been a critical player in helping the Canadian aerospace industry position itself in the global economy through the appropriate and competitive use of leading edge science and technologies. World-class public research facilities can support earlier stages of research, accelerate technology transfer and diffusion, and attract foreign investment in Canada's industry. The Aerospace Manufacturing Technology Centre The NRC can respond to the needs of the Canadian industry, especially SMEs, while building on its existing strengths and providing an integrated approach to aerospace manufacturing technologies. The Aerospace Manufacturing Technology Centre (AMTC) will be located on the campus of the University of Montreal. It will mobilize the existing facilities and programs of the Institute for Aerospace Research and other related NRC institutes and programs across Canada to create a centre that will assist industry to develop, demonstrate and implement advanced manufacturing methods for aerospace.

Flight Research Laboratory
The Flight Research Laboratory is one of IAR's four main laboratories. The Laboratory is located at the Uplands Research Complex in Ottawa (Canada), and has scientific and technical staff with special knowledge of experimentation in flight. The Flight Research Lab provides consulting services, engages in collaborative research and licenses its technology to a wide range of clients. The lab has the expertise to manage and perform complex in-flight experiments in the areas of flight vehicle research and flight systems technology development. We also coordinate and perform complex airborne research experiments in collaboration with other agencies. The Laboratory develops, maintains and operates a small fleet of dedicated research aircraft, to support research projects in its main program areas: flight mechanics, avionics and airborne research experimentation. The Flight Research Laboratory has a highly competent engineering research staff, with specialization in areas such as:

Aerospace Research and Technology Roundtable
The Roundtable on Aerospace Research and Technology, a joint effort of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and the Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board (ASEB) , will bring together high-level representatives from government agencies, the private sector, and universities to address the future needs and direction of U.S. aerospace research and technology. Co-chairs for the effort are Mr. Neil Armstrong, Chairman of the Board, EDO Corporation; and Dr. Wm. A. Wulf, President, National Academy of Engineering. Today, the lack of research funding has the aerospace and air transportation industries looking to the future with some trepidation, wondering: How long will our national air transport infrastructure remain safe and viable? How will we address the long-term challenges of assuring air-travel quality for passengers? Are we making real progress on noise-reduction technologies? Are we compromising our long-term national defense by under-investment in research? Are we providing sufficiently challenging technological advances to attract and retain the best students, engineers, and leadership? These important questions - and the broader implications of current U.S. aerospace research policy - may not be fully recognized and understood by federal policymakers or the American public. For this reason, the National Academy of Engineering has established the Aerospace Research and Technology Roundtable to address both immediate and long-term issues in aerospace research and technology. The roundtable will enable dialogue between the various sectors of the aerospace engineering community, help foster consensus and coordination among government, industry and academia concerning the direction of leadership and policy, and focus the attention of key policy and decision makers in the Administration on current and future critical needs in aerospace research and technology.
