Section 1: Fostering Creativity and Aesthetics in Young Children The text defines creativity in several ways. A general definition of creativity is a way of thinking and acting or making something that is original for the individual and valued by that person.
Web Activities
A search on the Internet reveals numerous Web sites on the topic of creativity, ways to encourage creativity, and creative projects and products. Conduct an Internet search, locating at least four reliable sites that address creativity and young children. Review, compare, and contrast the information provided on each site.
  • Does the information appear to be accurate? It is developmentally appropriate? What age of children is it most appropriate for? Does any of the information appear to be product-oriented?
After your Internet search on creativity, choose one Web site that you would recommend to parents to use with children.
  • Why is this site appropriate?

for this arts aesthetics section. Students will read and answer questions on "Why Are There No Great Women Artists?" by Dr. Linda Nochlin, professor of art history at Yale University. The article is a bit long and her cynicism is dated, but selective reading (or adaptation, if the teacher wishes) makes it accessible. Linda Nochlin denies the nineteenth century notions that art springs from genius plus the expression of emotion. Rather she posits that creativity is a function of social conditions: family background and encouragement, institutions that reward artists, education, and financial stability. It is a social causation theory, which is not new among political philosophers, historians, art historians, or aestheticians; but Nochlin is the first to apply it to the question, "Why are there no great women artists?" Whether students agree with her or not, her writing makes for excellent discussion about an important issue in aesthetics.

Abstract: In this paper we show how discussion about design quality or even usability is often discussion about aesthetics. First, we introduce some definitions of beauty in aesthetics. Then, we introduce how the beauty of the Web design affects the feeling of online trust, and bring forth observations about this design quality as an aesthetic notion. As a result, we present how simplicity and beauty affect the user's experience and interpretation of the design, and contemplate on how this perception may ... (Update)

Jason Alexander wrote: "...It's true that the Ancient Greeks didn't leave us with a good expression of the fifth phase of our emergence: Aesthetics as Fine Arts." If by this you mean that the Greeks didn't do philosophy of art, or that they didn't do it well, how would you classify Aristotle's "Poetics" or Plato's "Ion" or his discussion of poetry in the "Republic"? Or Aristophanes' on poetry in (I think) "The Clouds"? What would they have had to do differently to meet your criteria? Peter

Internal Vibrating Pager: The Aesthetics and Economy of New Media Arts Projects
lucy@soda.co.uk
This illustrated presentation will introduce Soda and look at some of the strategies and tensions within our work. Using the Soda Internal Vibrating Pager project as a case study I will talk about our different roles as creators and consumers of new media knowledge, products and services and how these work with or against contemporary fine art practice. The Pager Project is a mixed media project developed by artist Lucy Kimbell, which has several sites, mapping an economics of sexual desire. It involves the production and distribution of a limited edition of vibrating pagers (designed to be worn internally); and media interfaces stimulating calls to the pagers operating within the usual arenas of (primarily) male desire including 0898 chat lines, print media, the web, and cards in phone boxes. Funded by the Arts Council of England, and supported by TEST and DA2, the project will be live in October 1999. return to conference programme

Programme directors: Andrew Harrison and Carolyn Wilde (see below for bibliographies) All students meet with Andrew Harrison and Carolyn Wilde in the first week of the Autumn Term to arrange times for seminars. All students on the course will meet together weekly with one or both of the course directors for (at least) 2 hours each week to work through the topics involved in each unit. For each essay one of the directors of the course will be a tutor. Deadlines for preliminary drafts of essays will be negotiated and agreed individually, should be adhered to, and will always provide the occasion for individual consultation (minimum time 1 hour). In addition, students will normally have a minimum of 2 meetings with their tutors for each essay to decide the essay topic and to provide final feedback on the assessment. In addition it is expected that the students taking this course will themselves organise regular meetings together to discuss shared interests in the topics they will engage in, will report to the directors on the progress of these meetings and will call on the help of the course directors from time to time who may assist in drawing on the interests of other members of the university as and when this is possible. N.B. Students are also advised to attend the 3rd Year lectures on Aesthetics.

The term “to compose” literally means the outer assembling of elements to form an ostensible whole, which indeed contradicts the reality of creativity. From within the unity of his inner, lively cognition, the true musical artist creates the enlivened diversity of his musical statement. Looking at it more closely, the complete truth of how music originates within the musical poet appears much more comprehen-sive than assumed so far, and the melody is not the first element to originate in his mind but indeed the very last. So far, the end of the inner musical act was thought to be the beginning of creating music. And to the parts of an unknown whole, which were barely heard in the inner ear, some accepted, compositional structure was “attached,” which then had to simulate the impression of wholeness.

I-Design subscribers debate the general level of expertise of the average web user. "The Adventive lists are the best lists on the Internet. The I-Design discussion list is dedicated to helping website designers and marketers acquire the skills necessary in order to build a website that will optimize the successful delivery of a message. Discussions center on how to design concise websites with maximum effectiveness and no fluff. Designers need to aim toward delivering a website that loads quickly, has clean and clear navigation, and has well written, on-target content. I-Design will help you achieve this.

Terminal Sex -future sex as art practice How much better is your love than wine (book of Salomon 4.10) Sex spells the future of art. As the life sciences enable art to create life rather than objects and systemics, sex will come to serve as one of the foundations of art practice. But, it will be a sex different from how it's currently practiced. Jacking into your next sex will be terminal. It means an end to how we knew it. Then again, it will be the start of your Next Sex. Just as silicon make the current biotechnological revolution possible, the present move to the wired society prepare us for a cultural communication practice that will revolutionize future sex. It will be a distributed, dynamic, networked process going across entire species and life forms. It will be a romantic orgy of Life-Art. In the following I’ll comment a few possibilities of the new Life-Art from an aesthetical point of view. Prologue: the epigenetically change of paradigm If we understand the new developments of Life Science as the forthcoming of a new paradigm, then this can be understood as the transition from the Preformative to the Epigenetical age. In the 18 th century the question concerning the origin of life divided the intellectual community in two - on one hand the defenders of the theory of Preformation- and on the other, the young fraction composed by the advocates of Epigenesis. The Preformists believed that the formation of the newborn life was completely predetermined either in the male semen or -and as well as- in the female egg.
