DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE SENDS ADDITIONAL AID TO AFGHANISTAN DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE (CCODP) has just sent $200,000 more to help homeless people living in Afghanistan's northern province of Mazar-e-Sharif. The money will provide basic necessities (both food and household items) for 2,000 families. Priority is being given to the poorest and most vulnerable, including widows and families headed by women or disabled persons.
Each family will receive two packages a month for three months; the packages contain blankets, tents, tarpaulins, lamps, kerosene oil, cooking stoves, cooking oil, rice, sugar, beans and tea. CCODP's aid effort is being co-ordinated through Caritas Internationalis , the Catholic Church's international emergency aid network, as well as CCODP's sister organization Cordaid (Caritas Netherlands), the Norwegian Project Office, a Norwegian NGO, and the United Nations.
To date DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE
The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has also given CCODP $185,000 to help 11,000 Afghanis who do not enjoy "official refugee status" according to norms determined by the UN. The money is being used to distribute 2,300 emergency kits in 200 makeshift encampments – mostly in Pakistan.

We are back safe at Hotel Takekistan in Dushanbe [Tajikistan]. I've just had my first hot shower in a week and feel great! We had an incredible trip to Afghanistan. I can't really explain in an email, but I'll give you a quick summary. Everything is incredibly difficult in Afghanistan, starting with getting in and ending with getting out! It is an amazing country with wonderful friendly and warm people who have been victimized by war for 22 years. We have been led to wonderful people with whom we have been able to work amazingly well during the last week; it has felt very clearly that God has been with us despite the difficulties of war, drought, and poverty. S has been a wonderful leader of our delegation,Â…and Help The Afghan Children (HTAC) is truly a wonderful organization, and I would travel anywhere under any circumstances with them! We were welcomed in Afghanistan by ACTED, the French agency for Technical Co-operation and Development. They have been working in Afghanistan for many years and had met S during the earthquake relief in 1998. Their guesthouse offered safe and friendly shelter and they proved to be great allies in our effort to aid the people of Afghanistan. Our trip was complicated somewhat by a serious rain storm on the evening we arrived, turning the four inches of dust into three inches of mud. This was only the second rain in three years, and caused flash floods in some of the refugee settlements, washing away tents and mud homes in Lalagazar, which was one of the communities we had agreed to help. Refugees in part of this area did not have tents and only had shelters of woven mats or blankets. Everyone and everything got totally soaked during a whole day of rain. Many people got sick from the exposure.

Many more schools are offering out-of-school clubs to children. There are Breakfast clubs - open before school so children can enjoy breakfast there, after-school clubs - open in the afternoons and Holiday playschemes open during school holidays. Many schools offer sports, computer clubs or a quiet place for older pupils to do homework. Schools in England often offer booster classes for 11-14 year olds and summer schools to help pupils moving from primary to secondary school. Your teenage son or daughter may enjoy going to one of a wide range of youth clubs run either by the local authority or by scouts, guides, churches and other voluntary organisations.

This area is not under the control of the Taliban. As of October 25 there were 61,000 families living in this camp and cooking fuel is very scarce. Other schools are being urged to participate and there is a good possibility that the local Rotary Clubs will match the money that students raise. A WIDOW, THREE OPHANS, AND AN UNCLE GONE MAD Khanem Gul and her family live just up the road from a former Al Qaeda training camp outside of Kabul. Their village is the yellow-brown color of the fields around it. They stayed home as American bombers destroyed the camp compound. "Where would we go?" Gul says, "We had nowhere to go." When a stray bomb exploded nearby, their clay home shook and a neighbor's house fell down. War is like an unwanted but all-too-familiar visitor for Khanem Gul. Her husband died 20 years ago fighting Russian invaders. Her first son lost a leg during that war when he stepped on a landmine. Her second son went to prison under Afghanistan's Communist government, and disappeared.

Pressure-Cooking in the Ferghana Valley
Political and religious crackdowns heighten tension within Central Asia's breadbasket
by Vicken Cheterian
NamanganSpread across 22,000 kilometers, the Ferghana Valley is the economic, religious, and multiethnic heart of Central Asia. It is home to 9 million people, nearly a fifth of the population of the region. With a predominately Uzbek population, the valley sprawls across three Central Asian nations: Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgysztana legacy of Soviet efforts to ensure that it would never emerge as a unified regional power. That attempt has been successful in many ways, as the valley is the epicenter of the high-stakes political and ethnic rivalries that spill across its borders. Recent clashes in the northern Tajik province of Leninabad (recently renamed Khodjent) and elsewhere demonstrate the dangers arising as a result of the seemingly random dividing lines within the valley. Since the start of the war in Tajikistan in 1992, Leninabadthe richest and most populous province in the countrywas largely isolated from the violence by the 3,000-meter-high passes over the Fan mountains that separate the province from Dushanbe, the capital. But in early November 1998, heavy fighting left 300 dead and hundreds more wounded. The events have heightened tensions between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, which aspires to be the leading regional power. What Uzbekistan most fears in its neighbor is the growing presence of fundamentalist Islamic forces, which it dubs the Wahhabis, whose members occupy a third of government posts in Tajikistan. Many foreign observers are highly critical of the country's two-sided policy: encouraging an official, apolitical Islam while suppressing any Islamic practice outside the control of the state.

In the British list, I put those words and phrases that were Anglicized and that I think Indians would not have used, such as pukka sahib. This is a purely subjective placement and very likely full of errors. Donors pledge more aid for Afghanistan as refugee crisis worsens
The Bush administration has authorized $320 million in new relief aid to Afghan refugees, as part of an effort to quell resentment in Pakistan as thousands of refugees pour over the border each day. Administration officials are also actively considering a plan to air- drop food into Afghanistan to forestall starvation as winter approaches. Ironically, while the threat of U.S. military strikes is largely responsible for this latest Afghanistani refugee crisis, the U.S. remains the beleagured nation's largest supplier of food aid, according to White House officials. The $320 million will help Afghans who are already suffering from hunger and drought and may be in for more suffering when winter settles into the remote, mountainous country. White House officials said the aid package includes $295 million in new assistance combined with $25 million in emergency aid that authorized September 29. President Bush said the United States would work with the United Nations, the Red Cross and other charitable organizations to see that the money gets to the people who need it instead of being siphoned off by the Taliban authority in Afghanistan. The money will also help Afghans who have crossed into Pakistan, Iran and other neighboring countries in anticipation of war.
