Little the Afghans make is unattractive; even common grain bags to carry produce to market are often embroidered to make them more beautiful. A camel caravan of nomads often looks like a circus parade, with the animals decked out in woven finery. The Islamic traditions of fine calligraphy and graphic arts are evoked in the fine filigreed flourishes that decorate many buildings. Poetry and poets are revered. Although the people of Afghanistan may have been sorely stressed by centuries of warfare and a difficult environment, their arts have prospered nonetheless.

There are two types of Muslim faith. They are, the "Sunni'' Muslims and the Shi'i Muslims. Their bible is called the Qur'an. The man who started the religion was named Muham. It was started in the year 622. The name of their god is Allah.
One of their important holidays is called Ramadan. They don't eat from dawn ti'll dusk. They gather in the evenings and visit with each other. It is a time for inner reflection, devotion to Allah and self control. Muslims think of it as a kind of getting ready for their spiritual lives.
The Taliban and Al-Qaeda terrorist groups practice a strict form of Islam. This strict form of Islam is to the Muslim faith as the Ku Klux Klan is to Christianity.
The Ku Klux Klan (a.k.a. KKK) is a very prejudice group of Christians (who do not act like they are) and if you are black, Jewish, or any kind of minority they hate you and do horrible things to you and people like you.
So the analogy means that the Islams have the same religon as the Muslims but like the KKK they hate anyone who doesn't believe in what they believe in.
They believe that women should not be educated and should not work anywhere but in their own homes. If someone sees a woman doing those things she get's hit or other kinds of abuse in a public area. They also think that men must grow beards.

Afghanistan culture on Wired
I came across a really great article about Afghanistan on Wired today. What makes it good is that many people are reporting on the the Taliban, bin Laden, and the destruction there, but not about the people and what they go through under the Taliban rule. Did you know that the Taliban has outlawed the Internet for being obscene and anti-Islamic? The Taliban have also targeted the country's ethnic minorities such as the Hazara who are in favor of "freedom, democracy, justice, equal rights and human rights no matter what gender, no matter what religion, no matter what ethnic background, no matter what language and no matter what skin color." Sadly the life expectancy for Afghanistans is only years.

Nancy Belck, Chancellor, University of Nebraska at Omaha
On January 19, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved a ground lease agreement with the Suzanne and Walter Scott Foundation to construct additional student housing on UNO's south campus.
Scott Village will have 480 units and will join UNO's two other residential facilities - Scott Hall on the south campus and University Village on the north. This addition brings to UNO a total housing capacity of more than 1,200 beds. The new facilities will be available for fall 2003 occupancy.
This is exciting news for students planning to attend UNO who want on-campus living. Last year, more than 700 students were placed on a housing wait list.
As with UNO's existing residential halls, a professional management company will be hired to manage the facility. Students enrolled in the College of Information Science, Technology and Engineering will have priority for assignment in Scott Village, followed by students in programs for which UNO has statewide responsibility.
Scott Village will be built on 12 acres of land southeast of Scott Hall. Plans call for 10, three-story buildings to be constructed, featuring apartment-like suites. Each suite offers shared living and kitchen space, four private bedrooms and two shared baths. Other amenities include a 2,500-square-foot clubhouse for resident gatherings and use.

Taliban Demolition of Buddhas tarak shah Near the beginning of March, soldiers aimed anti-aircraft artillery and tanks at enormous Buddha statues that had been carved into the side of a cliff over 1500 years ago. Dynamite also covered the Buddhas, as requested by Mullah Mohammed Omar, the mysterious one-eyed leader of the Taliban, the extremist regime that controls 90% of Afghanistan. On Monday, February 26, the Mullah ordered that all idols in the country, including the giant Buddhas be destroyed. Yet every single day the people of Afghanistan are enduring the most intense suffering, and we, the international community, the media, the United States, do not even seem to care. Many children die in the freezing temperatures as their families make the trek from home to the squalid and overcrowded refugee camps in Pakistan or those, equally squalid and overcrowded, set up by the UN inside Afghanistan. Meanwhile, the Taliban (whose main supporter is Pakistan) controls 90% of the country; publicly hangs and shoots suspected prostitutes and thieves; imprisons men for shaving, watching television, flying kites, and playing with birds; rapes and oppress women to an unimaginable degree. Single women and widows, who, like all women, are not allowed to work (or even leave the house unless they have made themselves almost invisible to eyes and ears), are forced to turn to prostitution in order to support themselves.

Had a fascinating conversation recently with Gary Crandall, pastor of the Resurrection Community Church. In a time when Americans have been forced to do a crash course on Afghan culture, Gary's experiences living in many parts of that country when he was a young man offer insights most of us aren't privy to. "I had been in the military in Stuttgart, Germany, responsible for writing the base newspaper, during which time I also developed a love of photography," says Gary. "A bit later we were offered an option. If we took an early discharge, we could stay anywhere in Europe for up to a year, then the military would arrange to get us back home." Having seen a good deal of western Europe during his tour of duty, Gary took advantage of the opportunity to experience more remote regions.

Return to World Literature Index Page Teaching Afghanistan Society and Culture Carol Hannamann Academic Setting I am currently a Title VI Reading teacher at Mary Ann Binford Elementary School. The school has adopted the Balanced Literacy Program for reading instruction throughout the school. The standardized test required is the Terra Nova. This test is generally administered in March for 3rd through 5th grade students for our school. Throughout the school year our goal as reading teachers is to give the students the opportunity to work in small groups to develop their reading and comprehension skills. The students I work with range from grades first through fifth. Currently there are 957 students enrolled. Mary Ann Binford is a year round multi-track school; therefore the school is able to accommodate such a high enrollment. The school is located in a low socio-economic area where most of the students are of Mexican descent. 88% are Mexican nationals, 9% are Anglo, and Native Americans make up about 3% of the student population. There is a high student turnover rate due to the Mexican nationals living a nomadic lifestyle. The school offers many different programs because so many of the students are monolingual.
