General Prehistory Aryans and Achaemenids (1500 B.C. to 330 B.C.) Alexander The Great (330 B.C. to 327 B.C.) ... Modern Afghanistan (1901 to Present) General Top of Page Afghanistan is about 260,000 square miles or roughly the size state of Texas or the country of France. It is divided into 29 provinces called Welaayets . Most of these Welaayets are characterized by distinct linguistic and cultural elements. Each Welaayet is subdivided into districts called Wuluswalis and subdistricts called Alaqhadaris . Most of these administrative distributions have been drawn along particular geographic and ethnic lines. Afghanistan is often referred to as the Switzerland of Asia. Both countries are mountainous, situated inland, lacking contact with oceans or seas. Both countires are inhabited by many different races who have heard the tramp of invaders marching towards the south. Islam, which is the main religion of the country, was introduced by the Arabs between 704 and 714 A.D. Afghanistan encompasses over 50 ethnic groups, 32 independent languages, over 70 dialects and numerous social, cultural tribal groupings. The more prominent ethnic groups include

John Heelan of the UK comments on my observation: "In the Western Hemisphere, the US must assume almost total responsibility. In Africa and Eurasia, except for East and Southeast Asia, the EU should assume the leadership, with the strong backing of the US. Whether the EU has reached a point where it can assume that responsibility remains to be seen". John says this reminds him of George Orwell's San Francisco Chronicle has published an article about the library at San Francisco State University. The shelves are abandoned. The students are doing all their work on line. This makes more and more sense. I have a large library, including the huge Oxford English Dictionary . It is simpler to use the online version, so the printed book just sits there. It is hard to realize how much information in available on line. I checked Google for George Orwell, and up came 143,000 entries!! Would Orwell have been happy? Ronald Hilton - 2/11/02

Everyone is talking about Afghanistan, but before September 11, most Americans did not even know where it is. Our knowledge of that whole area is very thin. I erred when I said that the Pashtuns used to be called Parthians. In fact they were Pathans, a neighboring tribe. What the relationship is between these two tribes with almost identical names in I do not know. I suspect that they may be the same. Today the Pathans are known as Pashtu in Afghanistan and Pakistan. In all, the Pathans constitute one of the largest tribal groupings in the world. Ronald Hilton - 11/23/01

William Blum's Cold War Dissident will be published by Soft Skull Press in December. Afghanistan 1979-1992: America's Jihad His followers first gained attention by throwing acid in the faces of women who refused to wear the veil. CIA and State Department officials I have spoken with call him "a fascist," "definite dictatorship material." This did not prevent the United States government from showering the man with large amounts of aid to fight against the Soviet-supported government of Afghanistan. His name was Gulbuddin Hekmatyar. He was the head of the Islamic Party and he hated the United States almost as much as he hated the Russians. His followers screamed "Death to America" along with "Death to the Soviet Union'", only the Russians were not showering him with large amounts of aid. The United States began supporting Afghan Islamic fundamentalists in 1979 despite the fact that in February of that year some of them had kidnapped the American ambassador in he capital city of Kabul, leading to his death in the rescue attempt. The support continued even after their brother Islamic fundamentalists in next-door Iran seized the US Embassy in Teheran in November and held 55 Americans hostage for over a year. Hekmatyar and his were, after all, in battle against the Soviet Evil Empire; he was thus an important member of those forces Ronald Reagan called "freedom fighters".

Afghanistan: A battleground through the ages
by Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service It is a country that has humbled three empires, yet Afghanistan has few natural resources and is wreathed in poverty.
Afghanistan is sheltering Osama bin Laden, the man at the center of the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon. President Bush wants him "dead or alive."
Bush also has said the United States "will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them." A full range of diplomatic and economic efforts is under way to convince the Islamic Taliban movement to turn over bin Laden.
Afghanistan is a rugged country regarded as the crossroads between Central and South Asia. As such, it lies on the route that invaders and explorers have taken from Alexander the Great to Marco Polo to the British to the Soviet Union.
There is no functioning government in Afghanistan. The executive branch broke down in 1996. The legislative branch stopped functioning in 1993. The judicial branch stopped in 1995.
The Taliban get most of their support from the Pashtun ethnic group. They control the capital of Kabul and about 80 percent of the country while other factions rule the multiethnic north. The United States does not recognize the Taliban as Afghanistan's government.
