The Abolitionist Legacy : From Reconstruction to the NAACP
James M. McPherson (Princeton Univ. Press, 1995); Paperback.
This history by the author or the Pulitzer Prize-winning history of the Civil War, Battle Cry of Freedom, traces the continued activism of the abolitionist generation from Reconstruction through their battles against post-Reconstruction segregation to the creation of one of the leading organizations of the modern civil rights movement. McPherson includes a good discussion of the uneasy alliances forged with the woman's suffrage and anti-imperialist movements, and finds that it was no coincidence that abolitionist Moorfield Storey was simultaneously president of the Anti-Imperialist League and the NAACP.
African Americans on the Western Frontier
Monroe Lee Billington and Roger D. Hardaway, eds. (Univ. Press of Colorado, 1998); Hardcover.
Pathbreaking anthology of essays about the diverse range of occupations and experiences of African Americans in the West. Although some aspects of their experience have received increased attention in the last few years, most notably "Buffalo Soldiers" and African American cowboys, this volume offers an unusually comprehensive view by bringing together essays on everything from slavery and the civil rights struggle to the development of African American newspapers.

African American studies proves to be a beneficial minor
African American Studies provides a basis for cross-cultural understanding.
    Deanna Jue, staff reporter
    http://www.as.ua.edu/amstud/az.html

Aside from learning about African American culture, African American studies as a minor enriches cultural awareness.
Dr. Amilcar Shabazz, director of the African American studies program and assistant professor, explained some benefits of the minor.
“The opportunities in terms of how African American studies enhances a profession are substantial. Many find out as they leave into the professional world it has become a global environment,” Shabazz said.
He notes that even within the United States, we are a melting pot of cultures. Shabazz said African American studies gives specific background knowledge on African American culture, but it also gives information, skills and experiences that prepare students for understanding all cultural differences in an enlightened way.
Sophomore African American studies minor Angela Scott feels the same way.

The Department of Afro-American Studies offers a graduate program in the field of African American Studies. The aim of this program is to combine an interdisciplinary training in African American cultural and social studies with a focus in a major disciplinary field, leading to the PhD in African American Studies. The program admits four or five students a year into a five- to six-year program.
While there are no specific prerequisites, typically students either have undergraduate majors in African American Studies, or have majors in fields such as anthropology, comparative literature, English, history, history of art, music, philosophy, sociology, and religious studies, and have done some undergraduate work in the field of African American studies. The fundamental rationale for the program is that there now exists a substantial body of scholarly writing on African American social, cultural, economic and political life and history, conducted by scholars with a primary training in a traditional discipline, who have drawn on the work of colleagues in other fields to enrich their work. This interdisciplinary corpus of scholarship is at the core of African American Studies, and most serious work on African American literature, history, culture and social, economic or political life, proceeds with an awareness of this interdisciplinary background. There is, as a result, a fairly substantial tradition of writings and a lexicon of ideas that together define a core of knowledge in the field. Familiarity with this core at the graduate level is an important part of the training of those who work on these topics.

    http://www.unh.edu/afamstudies/gendescrp.html
T he African American Studies Minor will provide students with an interdisciplinary approach to a central dimension of U.S. history, literature, and culture. Many aspects of African American experience and self- expression have been central to the development of the United States, highlighting both the nation's problems and its promise, and affecting virtually all areas of academic study through the years, from the humanities to the sciences. The Minor therefore is designed to serve the needs of all students, regardless of their ethnic or cultural background, complementing their work in their major fields of study while serving also as a focused corrective to traditionally marginalized approaches to African American history and culture. The required courses will provide students with a general understanding of the broad and diverse spectrum of African American history, literature, and culture. Electives, independent studies, and/or internships will enable students to develop that understanding in their major fields of study. TWO REQUIRED COURSES:
ENGL 517/AMST 502: Introduction to African American Literature and Culture
HIST 505 or HIST 506: African-American History Electives
Electives will be approved by the Minor, with the consent of the appropriate faculty members, and will be announced each semester. Special topics and other courses (for example, courses covering specific periods in American literature or history) may sometimes focus on African American studies; check with the Minor coordinator or the course instructor each semester for details. Some courses will require special approval by the Minor coordinator and course instructor.
