INTRODUCTION
In honor of Black History Month, the New York State Library is issuing An African-American Bibliography: Education. This bibliography lists selected resources of the New York State Library that document and comment on the educational experiences of African Americans in the United States. In addition to primary sources and significant works, this document contains selected references to bibliographies, research aids, and reference works. Resource materials in journals and reports are not emphasized. Researchers should consult abstracts and indexes for this literature. Although this bibliography covers the time period from colonial to the present, it emphasizes recent scholarship, including the multicultural approach to education. The Biography section emphasizes teachers, administrators, and founders of educational institutions. For notable contributors in other fields, see additional bibliographies in this series (listed below).

Description of Program Florida recently passed a law that mandates that all school districts teach the history and experiences of African Americans in grades K-12 across the curriculum. In addition to preparing and widely distributing instructional materials for teachers, specialized workshops have been held to train advocates at each school to assist teachers in the instructional phase of the implementation process. Based on an annual survey of the public schools in Miami conducted by the African American History Advisory Committee, more training is needed. A joint project with the University of Miami School of Education has designed a comprehensive teacher-training Summer Institute with the aim of assisting teachers to be effective in the infusion of African American studies across the curriculum. The goal of the African American Studies Summer Institute is to promote an understanding of the culture and experiences of people of African descent and aid teachers in preparing students for the diversity of cultures in the Miami-Dade community.

http://www.afam.rutgers.edu/
The Department of African-American and African Studies at Rutgers – Newark offers students an opportunity to study the cultures of the African diaspora, from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. Our course offerings focus particularly on the United States, Africa, and the Caribbean, and we hope to include courses on Afro-Hispanic culture in future. Our faculty are trained in diverse fields – anthropology, film studies, literature, history, political science, to name a few and our courses are often interdisciplinary in nature. All of the courses are designed to integrate scholarship on gender, race, and class. The African-American/African Studies major/minor is geared towards both the scholarly and the working world. We aim to produce graduates who are ready for advanced graduate study in the humanities or social sciences; we also aim to produce professionals who can work in a variety of fields that require an understanding of the history and cultures of African and African-descended peoples. Our major can be used in a broad array of fields, such as marketing; journalism; education; and the arts. In future we hope to establish internships for our majors, where they can apply their scholarly knowledge to a particular career. Flexibility is a key characteristic of our program. African-American/African Studies majors have a wide array of courses to choose from, and may also take courses in other departments as a way to fulfill electives in their major. Additionally, some of the courses in African-American/African Studies may be taken for credit towards a major or minor in another department. The Department of African-American/Studies is dedicated to giving our students the most expansive education possible, and for this reason we allow our students a range of course options, both from within and without the department. Several of our courses are also offered during the evening.

The primary objective of an African American studies curriculum, regardlessof race or color, is education for positive and productive citizenship.
    http://www.uga.edu/~iaas/home.html
The Institute for African American Studies has evolved at The University of Georgia as an academic program of study since 1969, though its current status dates from 1992. It is dedicated to the production of creative research on the achievements of African Americans and to exciting instruction for a diverse community of thinkers. In addition, it serves as a cultural repository and resource for the citizenry of Georgia. The Institute offers several courses in the core curriculum. Students wishing to earn a certificate or undergraduate degree in African American Studies can do so by taking the recommended courses approved by the Director. The intent is to be both intellectually exciting and rigorously challenging. Often views might seem unusually innovative. Many students of the Institute are interested in professional study and scholarly research beyond the undergraduate level. Others might begin to lay out a systematic plan for thoughtful public service.
The Role of African American Studies
Western Civilization has been a reliable means to understand world cultures for many generations, but the rapidly changing demography of the United States requires a more profound awareness of cultural resources by thinkers of color. As seekers after human truth, African Americanists should test traditional assumptions about race to help students make more enlightened choices for themselves and their civilization. The primary objective of an African American studies curriculum, regardless of race or color, is education for positive and productive citizenship. Hence, a reasonable list follows:

Contact the site editor with questions or concerns. Introduction The African American Studies program examines, from numerous disciplinary perspectives, the experiences of people of African descent in Black Atlantic societies, including the United States, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Courses in the program explore the innovative, complex, and distinctively African American social structures and cultural traditions that Africans in the diaspora have created. Students are exposed to the historical, cultural, political, economic, and social development of people of African descent. Emphasizing a diasporic framework of analysis, the program demands that students acquire both an analytic ability rooted in a traditional discipline and interdisciplinary skills of investigation and research. African American Studies offers training of special interest to those considering admission to graduate or professional schools and careers in education, journalism, law, business management, city planning, international relations, politics, psychology, publishing, or social work. The interdisciplinary structure of the program offers students an opportunity to satisfy the increasingly rigorous expectations of admissions committees and prospective employers for a broad liberal arts perspective that complements specialized knowledge of a field.
