Cancer Prevention Clinical Trials
Listed below are clinical trials related to cancer prevention. If you are interested in learning more about a trial, access the Web site address or call the phone number provided for additional information.
SELECT (Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial) is the largest-ever prostate cancer prevention trial. SELECT is coordinated by the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) and is sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Previous studies suggest that selenium and vitamin E (alone or in combination) may reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer by 60% and 30%, respectively, but only a large clinical trial such as SELECT can confirm those initial findings. SELECT began enrolling patients in August 2001 and hopes to enroll 32,400 men over a five-year period. The study is open to men 55 and older. African-American men, 50 and over, are eligible to enroll because prostate cancer strikes African-American men earlier and more often than Caucasian men. There are 435 SELECT sites throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada.

LESSON PLANS
1. The Railway 2. Mark Twain 3. Native ... 10. Natural Disasters
African-Americans in the American West
Grade level: 7-12 Overview
The role of African Americans in the movement towards westward expansion has been largely overlooked in American history books. This lesson attempts to focus students' attention on the lives and contributions of these often forgotten pioneers. Students will examine documents and statistics to compare treatment by the government of the United States and other westward migrants of Blacks and Indians. The lesson is divided into four parts, the first calling attention to early contributors to that past, such as William Clark's slave, known only as "York", and to James Beckwourth, who had a long and adventurous career as trader, trapper, scout and interpreter. The second part of the lesson emphasizes the period just before the Civil War, when abolitionists, escaped slaves and free blacks moved into the border states and the disputed territories of Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri. The final two sections of this lesson concentrate on the lives of the Exodusters and other African Americans who sought opportunities as westward pioneers, and on the Buffalo Soldiers. These African American soldiers, so named by Indians who thought the blacks' hair resembled buffalo fur, were Civil War veterans, joined by later enlistees. These troops provided little-known service to the American military establishment in the conquest and pacification of the last frontier lands. That they suffered discrimination and the resentment of the overwhelmingly white settlers and entrepreneurs they defended, while fighting the remnants of the similarly oppressed, harassed and reviled native Americans seems particularly ironic and poignant in our own time.

Reading Research Network
Introduction

Abstracts

Background Information

President George W. Bush and Secretary of Education Rod Paige made reading and rigorous scientific research priorities in educational reform. These priorities are part of the Department of Education's Strategic Plan. The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the National Institute for Literacy (NIFL) and the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Vocational and Adult Education support these priorities by funding the Adult Literacy Research Network. Research Funded: New Adult Literacy Research Network In September 2002, six research awards were made to the institutions and principal investigators listed below. These studies will design, develop, implement and study the effectiveness of adult literacy interventions for low literate adults, including the role of decoding, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension instruction in adult literacy and explicitness of instruction. All six projects employ experimental or quasi-experimental designs, and at least four of these use combined quantitative and qualitative research methods. Over the next five years, these research teams will screen nearly 73,000 adults with low literacy skills in order to identify the more than 3,800 research participants for these studies. It is estimated that more than 60% of those taking part in the studies will be minorities; most studies will have from 30-60% African American and from 20-50% Hispanic or Latino participants, many of whom are not native speakers of English. The investigators will be conducting this research in more than 80 sites in 16 different states: Alaska, California, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Washington.

Merit-Based Financial Support The College of Human Services and Health Professions and the Graduate School grant merit-based graduate awards and appointments to their most outstanding students. These awards, including fellowships, scholarships, and assistantships, are highly competitive. They should not be confused with financial aid awards that are made in cases of demonstrated financial need and are not based on academic merit. ( See Need-Based Financial Aid Prospective students may apply for merit-based University graduate fellowships, University African American graduate fellowships, Graduate School scholarships, and graduate assistantships and scholarships by checking the appropriate boxes on the admission application form. A candidate's complete application package of transcripts, admission test scores, letters of recommendation, and application with personal statement is carefully evaluated during the awards process. Applicants who believe they may qualify for assistantships with academic units at the University other than the one to which they are applying should contact those units directly.
