The KIFWEBE mask (below, left) takes both male and female forms. Worn only by Kifwebe men of Eastern Congo, these masks are worn on the head to police or to intimidate enemies. The male mask is differentiated by a high comb; the grooved pattern of white rubbed into the surface represents positive concepts of purity, light, peace or the moon. Red is used as an accent for blood, fire, courage or fortitude.
The FANG mask (below, center) made by the Fang people of Cameroon is distinquished by a highly stylized, long narrow face and asymmetrical paint. The mask is not worn, but paraded through the village to keep it safe, by warding off misdeeds and protecting the villagers against miscreants. The Fang masks today are modeled after the old Fang masks of Gabon.
The GURO mask (below, right) of the Baule, Guro and Yaure peoples of the Ivory Coast are characterized by narrow, well-proportioned faces, small chins and high foreheads, lowered eyelids, narrow nose and delicate nostrils. Scarification and elaborate coiffure are considered favorable attributes. Most often these are "danced" solely for amusement. KIFWEBE - Congo KIFWEBE - Congo Actual Size: 31" X 16"

23. The Umfundalai Tradition Of African Dance And Philosophy
african dance TRADITION PHILOSOPHY. UPCOMING EVENTS; Umfundalai Classes;Certified Umfundalai Instructors; The Generations Project ;
http://www.umfundalai.com/
Kariamu Welsh created the Umfundalai African Dance technique in 1970 out of a quest for a functional and aesthetic method that would mirror some of her personal experiences, as well as a collective ethos and history that would reflect her African and African American heritage. Umfundalai means "essence" or "essential" in Kiswahili. The technique is a Pan-African dance technique in that it draws from dance styles and movements from different African and African disasporan cultures. The technique espouses a holistic view of the body and the arts including theater, music, sound, song, masquerade, and vocalization. The Umfundalai technique emerges from a world view in which the universe is perceived as a harmonious entity in which life force exists in all things including the known and the unseen. The Umfundalai technique stands on the shoulders of the Katherine Dunham and Pearl Primus techniques, although it has taken a different path.

Mali and Senegal- Mandeng and Wolof MALI and SENEGAL Mandeng and Wolof ... Gio, Gola, Vai, and Mendi Africa is divided into 53 independent countries and protectorates. The African people belong to several population groups and have many cultural backgrounds of rich and varied ancestry. There are over 800 ethnic groups in sub-Saharan Africa, each with its own language, religion, and way of life. Dance is a means of marking the experiences of life, encouraging abundant crops, and healing the sick soul and body, and is also done just for enjoyment. Traditionally, people throughout the continent of Africa achieve direct communication between themselves and their gods through music and many ritual dances. African dance embodies athleticism and a graceful beauty flowing with rhythm. All ceremonial African dances have a purpose. They tell stories and relate history. African music and dance in its essence communicates concepts of life on an elevated level; dance to the African is a universal, transcendent language.

Africa covers about one fifth of the world's land area and about an eighth of its people. It is a land of striking contrasts and great natural wonders, from the tropical rain forests of western and central Africa, to the world's largest desert, the Sahara, to vast grasslands, and the world's longest river, the Nile. Africa is divided into 53 independent countries and protectorates. The African people belong to several population groups and have many cultural backgrounds of rich and varied ancestry. There are over 800 ethnic groups in sub-Saharan Africa, each with its own language, religion, and way of life. Coura Thiew, renowned Senegalese dancer who traveled across Africa and Europe performing African dances, was the first to bring authentic African dances to the stage and that's how Diamano Coura West African Dance Company received its name. Diamano Coura, in Wolof (a Senegalese language), means "those who bring the message." Diamano Coura West African dance brings its "message" through stories, theatricalized rituals, and traditional music to the international stage. African dance Listen to alotekana.mp3 while waiting for pictures to load. A traditional Mandinka drumming and dancing program consists of several parts. When the three drummers begin the sawruba , the women of the village form a big circle. The women will sing and if the music is good, they will dance. This part is especially for older women.
Next is the lelenjanno , which is a different kind of music and dancing. It is intended for the young and middle-aged. The madiba is a dance ‘with power’ for young people. On request the drummers may also play dimbatantango (or dimbajolo). The neighbours or age groups will organise this ‘more than dancing’ rhythm for women who have difficulty becoming pregnant. Another often requested dance is barawulo . This encourages the boys and girls to clean up the village. All these dances and many more you can learn at document.write('<');document.write('! ');

Liz Chruscinski
Contributing writer The sound of African beats filled the Clark Hall south lounge Tuesday as the Ma'at Black Student Union hosted its Umeta workshop. Umeta is Swahili for "a dance of young people." Students had the opportunity to learn African and Afro-Caribbean dance moves taught by Menjiwee Winfield, coordinator of campus dance group Omnimov. During the workshop, the moves became increasingly challenging. By the end of the workshop, the students were able to combine several different moves to perform an energetic African dance. Students could see similar dance techniques performed by Omnimov. The group, which began in 1966, is part of the African-American Cultural Program. "It is made of 17 dancers that perform jazz, African, hip-hop, ballet and a little bit of everything," Winfield said. An Omnimov fall concert is scheduled for Dec. 1 in the Illini Union. The Association of Black Cultural Centers will also host several dance groups on campus Dec. 1 through Dec. 3. Additionally, students are invited to become involved in the Ma'at Black Student Union, said Rebecca Bunn, Ma'at vice president. Ma'at meets every Tuesday at 7:30 in the Clark Hall south lounge.
