African Greys This is Sheena, a four year old Congo Grey owned by Real Macaw member Shelly Orloff. There are basically two flavors of Grey, Congo and Timneh. The differences are the Congo is slightly larger at 14 inches with bright red tail a black beak and light gray plumage. The Timneh on the other hand is much darker gray with the upper mandible reddish tipped with black and the tail a shade of maroon. The Grey parrot is renowned for its talking ability; as a mimic it has no rival among parrots. They also reproduce words with such accuracy that the teacher can be identified. This could also be a problem with them reproducing sounds that we don't particularly want to hear at sunrise such as car alarms, the phone, and the ever present wolf whistle. Congo? Timneh? Much confusion arises in the types of Greys. Basically, it is just two types, the Timnehs, which differ from the Congo's by having a brownish tail, and a horn colored upper beak, Congo's being black. They are also smaller, and tend to be a bit darker. Now it gets confusing, Terms such as "Cameroon" "Ghana" and others confuse the issue, but these are more geographical descriptions, not species. Congo's can range in size, coloration, and shape. The largest, lightest Silver birds tend to be preferred, but I have some tiny, dark Congo's that are my favorites, so to each his own. Out of my numerous breeding pairs, I have all shapes, and sizes. But, in temperament, and taking ability, an African Grey, is an African Grey. Years ago many imported Timneh's were being compared to domestic Congo's, and this led to some believing the Congo superior, but in my experience, they are all the same, the differences being individual ones, not species specific. Much of the notoriety of this species stems from the phenomenal gift of speech members exhibit. While many parrots learn some words or phrases, many cases have been documented of African Greys learning multiple lines of songs, prayers, or plays. The Guinness Book of World Records lists the best talking parrot or parrot like bird as a African Grey named Prudle. Prudle was captured near Jinja, Uganda in 1958 and when "he" retired from public life in 1977 had a vocabulary of nearly 1000 words. Many owners have been surprised (and sometimes shocked) when their Grey learned a new word or phrase after hearing it only a few times. One of our favorite stories in this respect was one related by a priest that had a pet Grey. While hanging some pictures in his office, the priest hit his hand with a hammer. He let out a stream of obscenities that his Grey learned (from this one occurrence according to the priest). The priest's embarrassment was compounded by the other aspect of greys gift for mimicking, that is they often sound exactly like the person that spoke the words or phrase. Greys (the English spelling is usually used - not Gray) are not limited to imitating speech. Phones, microwaves ovens, answering machines, other birds and chain saws (in the African jungle) have all been documented as part of the Grey's repertoire. Many owners and some studies suggest that Greys (and other parrots) don't just mimic but can use words learned in new combinations to convey new wants, needs and desires. Alex, a famous Grey that has been studied for years by Dr. Irene Pepperberg, invented the term "long yellow" to express his desire for more corn on the cob. A European study found Greys to have the intellectual capacity of a 5-year-old human child with the emotional development of a human 2 year old (read as terrible two year old).

When a bird is not happy, they can develop unacceptable behavior such as constant squawking. All birds are noisy and that should be expected, but an unhappy bird will keep it up by the hour. Unhappy and unhealthy birds will also resort to feather plucking, often due to boredom. Any bird can be taught tricks. Teaching your bird tricks is a way to keep them happy and active. The younger that I bought my birds the easier they are to train. I have taught parakeet has to pull little, toy cars, or to put one toy inside another toy. I have taught my macaws to play dead, paws up! What these birds are capable of is simply amazing. They can learn color differential. Instruct them to pick out the blue car, or the green car. Award with a bird treat suitable for the bird that you are training. Sometimes change the award to a love award, a kiss, scratch, or a pet. Birds are highly affectionate.

I will attempt to describe symptoms and remedies for each of them. It is always crucial that you have an avian vet to consult whenever a problem is suspected. Most often emergencies occur when there is no one available for help. In these cases, it may be necessary to take it upon yourself to do "something" if it is a matter of life or death. I would never suggest that anyone should do anything to avoid veterinarian medicine, but there are times when emergency situations arise and there is no medical help to be found. You may have to take it upon yourself to diagnose and remedy a problem, or lose the bird. The following are maladies that I classify as injuries because they are not caused by virus or bacteria, and are, therefore, not an illnesses. They are caused by improper care, negligence, accidents, and/or environment.
