Daryl Maeda's favorite historical era is the 1960s, but not for the same reasons that today's tie-dye-wearing, peace-sign-drawing youth might appreciate that part of America's past. Maeda, an assistant professor of history, is particularly interested in the development of Asian American activism.
"It drives me crazy when a television series or a movie tries to portray this era," Maeda says. "We end up with a watered-down version of history that reduces an incredible time period to nothing more than a stereotype."
Viewing the Past through the Lenses of History and Memory
Luce Assistant Professor of East Asian Studies Sheila Miyoshi Jager explores issues of national memory and discusses how people recall historical events in different ways as they distance themselves from the events. In this essay, part of Oberlin Online's Faculty Observations, Jager examines why the Korean War has been "forgotten" in the American national memory and investigates how people are remembering this past century of wars in a completely new context.

Miller, Christopher L. Nationalists and Nomads Essays on Francophone African Literature and Culture . xiv, 258 p., 22 halftones. 1998 Cloth $46.00tx 0-226-52803-0 Fall 1998
Paper $19.00tx 0-226-52804-9 Fall 1998 How does African literature written in French change the way we think about nationalism, colonialism, and postcolonialism? How does it imagine the encounter between Africans and French? And what does the study of African literature bring to the fields of literary and cultural studies? Christopher L. Miller explores these and other questions in Nationalists and Nomads. Miller ranges from the beginnings of francophone African literaturewhich he traces not to the 1930s Negritude movement but to the largely unknown, virulently radical writings of Africans in Paris in the 1920sto the evolving relations between African literature and nationalism in the 1980s and 1990s. Throughout he aims to offset the contemporary emphasis on the postcolonial at the expense of the colonial, arguing that both are equally complex, with powerful ambiguities. Arguing against blanket advocacy of any one model (such as nationalism or hybridity) to explain these ambiguities, Miller instead seeks a form of thought that can read and recognize the realities of both identity and difference. Feminist and Womanist Criticism
of African Literature:
A Bibliography By Sharon Verba July 20, 1997 Those women who struggle without giving up hope, herald the impending change...: change in attitude for both men and women as they evaluate and re-evaluate their social roles....
Rereading, willful misreading, and de- and re-coding are tools used in African literature and womanist or feminist discourse to challenge "canonized 'literature'" that tends to black out Black and blanch out Woman.
Kofi Owusu, "Canons Under Siege" [T]he collective effort has to emerge from the ranks of those whose life is theorized.
Sisi Maqagi, "Who Theorizes" Feminist criticism of African literatures is a steadily growing field. The following bibliography includes articles and essays in English and French which examine African literatures (fiction, poetry, drama and oral literature) from a feminist or womanist perspective. It does not include, unfortunately, criticism in other languages such as Wolof, Xhosa, Zulu, Portuguese, German, or Arabic due to my own inability to read those languages. Also, authors whose works are originally written in languages other than French or English, such as Ngugi wa Thiongo's plays and the novel, Devil on the Cross , and Nawal al Sa'dawi's works, may be under-represented in this bibliography, as criticism often tends to be written in the language of the work being addressed.
