Healesville Sanctuary, Australia
This "zoo" is exclusively of Australian fauna only, set in a large area of native bushland . There are many displays throughout the day telling visitors more of the finer points of the inhabitants. The enclosures are very roomy, with several walk through enclosures. There is a main pathway with smaller paths running off this which leads to the animals. There is a cafeteria on site. Healesville is located about 120 kilometres from Melbourne. Last visited: 1998 Submitted by Nigel Foster nigelwfoster@hotmail.com Just browsing through your review pages, I was surprised by Nigel Foster's under-appreciation of Healesville Sanctuary, Victoria, Australia. To say that Melbourne has pretty much everything that Healesville would have is very misleading. To be sure, nearly every Australian collection these days has a large section on Australian animals, and Melbourne has upped this in recent years (I've been three times since 1992, most recently late last year) but Healesville not only specialises in Australian animals but in endangered Victorian animals such as Leadbetter's Possum, Helmeted Honey-eater, Superb Lyrebird and, of course, the Platypus where they were the first to breed it (and had twins in 1999!). Yes, Melbourne is excellent and getting better. When its master plan is complete it will compete with the best in the world. Already, I think the gorilla exhibit is the best I have seen, and that includes San Diego. But Healesville Sanctuary to me is the complete zoo, the only one I have ever visited where the visitor can actually see the three aims of zoos in practice; conservation with their breeding of endangered species, research - for example into the causes of bush die back and education with their excellent educational centre.

Urgent update: Help keep wild elephants safe PETA has learned that the cruel capture and export of 11 wild elephants in Swaziland to the San Diego Zoo and Lowry Park Zoo is scheduled for May despite an announcement made last September by Swaziland's minister of tourism that the elephants would not be removed and that any move to sell them would violate the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. The 12-year-old elephants are roaming freely with their families on the 74,130-acre Hlane Royal National Park. In exchange for a "donation" to the Swazi park, the elephants will be ripped from beautiful savannas and fields of umbrella-shaped trees, shoved into transport containers, and carted halfway around the world where they will spend the rest of their lives in small, barren zoo enclosures that could never simulate their natural habitat. At least 79 African elephants, most captured in the wild, have died in North American facilities since 1990, and not a single death was from old age. In fact, 95 percent never even reached age 40, far short of their 70-year life expectancy. PETA has offered to assist in translocating these elephants to another free-roaming area in Africa if the Hlane Royal National Park feels it is necessary to reduce their elephant population. CAPS ARCHIVE
Save African elephants from zoo captivity UPDATE: The cruel capture and export of 11 wild elephants in Swaziland to the San Diego Zoo and Lowry Park Zoo is scheduled for May 2003 despite an announcement made last year that the elephants would not be removed. Two US zoos - the San Diego Zoo in California and the Lowry Park Zoo in Florida - are planning to import from Africa a total of eleven elephants, to live out the rest of their lives in captivity. This plan is in the works even though there are 300 elephants in captivity already in the United States. The elephants reportedly being targeted are currently living in Swaziland's Hlane Royal National Park, the same park that took in dozens of baby elephants in 1994 after their families were slaughtered in a cull at Kruger National Park in South Africa. It would be a cruel irony if the same traumatised orphans who were relocated to Hlane to live out the rest of their lives in peace and freedom end up being traumatised yet again - captured, shipped overseas, and condemned to live the rest of their lives in tiny, barren zoo enclosures. No elephant should be removed from the wild for public display. WHAT YOU CAN DO Let the directors of these zoos know that importing elephants from the wild for public display is unacceptable.

Nigerian, Malaysian zoos accused of illegal gorilla trading

    http://europe.cnn.com/2002/WORLD/africa/04/26/nigeria.gorilla.smuggling.ap/index.html
LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) U.S. and Nigerian wildlife conservation groups are investigating allegations that four young gorillas captured in the African bush were recently traded to a Malaysian zoo as part of a burgeoning illegal trade in endangered primates, officials said Friday. Shirley McGreal, chairwoman of the International Primate Protection League, based in Summerville, South Carolina, said the four gorillas one male and three females were sent by a zoo currently being built in Abuja, Nigeria, to the Taiping Zoo in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The gorillas were allegedly shipped by South African Airways in mid-January via Johannesburg, South Africa. South African Airways officials said they could not immediately confirm the shipment. Officials at the Nigerian zoo could not be reached for comment. Conservationists believe the animals were illegally captured in the rain forests of Nigeria's central African neighbor, Cameroon, McGreal said. Trading of endangered species, including gorillas, whose origins are not firmly determined is forbidden under CITES, the international convention governing the international animal trade. Taiping Zoo officials sent a letter to the Protection League confirming it had recently received several gorillas from the Abuja zoo. A copy of the letter was obtained by The Associated Press. The gorillas were part of an exchange with the Nigerian zoo under which the Malaysian institution agreed to send other rare animals back to Nigeria, the letter said. Malaysia's Department of Wildlife and National Parks confirmed that Taiping Zoo had received two gorillas, but said it had taken steps to stop the importation of the other two gorillas.
