An Essay by Carl Sagan
Dreams Are Maps:
Exploration and Human Purpose
Editor's Note: Former Planetary Society President Carl Sagan died on December 20, 1996 of pneumonia after a prolonged illness. This essay is reprinted from the September/October 1992 issue of The Planetary Report. I know where I was when the Space Age began. In early October 1957, I was a graduate student at the University of Chicago, working toward a doctorate in planetary astronomy. The previous year, when Mars was the closest it ever gets to Earth, I had been at the McDonald Observatory in Texas, peering through the telescope and trying to understand something of what our neighboring world is like. But there had been dust storms on both planets, and Mars was 40 million miles away. When you're stuck on the surface of Earth, those other worlds, however tantalizing, are inaccessible. I was sure that someday spaceflight would be possible. I knew something about the American rocket pioneer, Robert Goddard, and V-2 rockets, Project Vanguard and even Soviet pronouncements earlier in the 1950s about their ultimate intentions to explore the planets. But despite all that, Sputnik 1 caught me by surprise. I hadn't imagined that the Soviets would beat the United States to Earth orbit, and I was startled by the large payload (which, US commentators claimed, must have been reported with a misplaced decimal point). Here the satellite was, beeping away, effortlessly circling the Earth every 90 minutes, and my heart soaredbecause it meant that we would be going to the planets in my lifetime. The dreams of visionary engineers and writersKonstantin Tsiolkovsky, Goddard, Wernher von Braun, H.G. Wells, Edgar Rice Burroughswere about to be fulfilled.

About Pictorial Maps
Decorative cartouches are frequently found on pictorial maps, such as this one by Karl Smith. Pictorial maps are a genre in which the cartography is enlivened with illustrations pertinent to the places shown: landmarks and buildings, peoples and ethnography, plants and animals, sometimes rendered in bird's-eye view. The maps often include historical events and references. Boats, airplanes and other modes of transportation, and local agricultural and manufactured products frequently appear. Generally, they include embellishments such as compass roses, elaborate cartouches , and decorative borders. The maps are usually characterized by humorous, playful or whimsical touches. Although by definition the maps are pictorial, they often include textual explanations of the illustrations. Inasmuch as the maps contain illustrations, they are usually very decorative, also serving the purpose of promoting tourism, and commemorating historical milestones and some annual events.

The Barren Lands: J.B. Tyrrell's Expeditions for the Geological Survey of Canada, 1892 - 1894 - J.B. Tyrrell was a famous Canadian geologist who went on numerous expeditions surveying a large portion of central and eastern Canada in the early 1890s. The University of Toronto's Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library has placed over 5,000 items related to these expeditions online, including images from field notebooks, photographs, maps, and published reports. Material describes the Barren Lands expeditions of 1893 and 1894, along with some additional materials from the Hudson Bay expeditions of 1885 and 1900. Includes diaries, letters, maps, photographs, and interactive maps of the four main expeditions, which allow users to click on different parts of the maps and obtain the documents that relate to each geographical area of the journey.
