Mirapex Parkinson's Drug Shows Promise
If you think the scientific community is in a slumber when it comes to discovering new treatments for Parkinson's disease ... think again. Yes, there's still " a whole lotta shak'in go'in on ", but this time it's in the laboratory. Progress has been made. A major breakthrough in treatment is about to be announced. Data from two studies on Parkinson's Disease is being released at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) meeting this week in Toronto, Canada. Parkinson’s Disease affects approximately 1% of people over age 60 (one million people in the United States), causing tremor, muscle rigidity, slowed motion, and loss of facial expression. All of these effects worsen over time.
The two, three-year studies were conducted to determine the long-term safety and effectiveness of the drug called pramipexole in the treatment of Parkinson's patients. The studies showed that more than 50% of the patient population successfully controlled symptoms, such as tremors and rigidity, with Mirapex (pramipexole dyhydrochloride tablets) without the use of levodopa (a traditional treatment). This is good news because, although levodopa is very effective initially, over time most patients must increase their dosage to maintain control of their symptoms.

Selma Pete grapes will dry on the vine after the canes that bear the fruit have been cut to stop the flow of water to grape clusters. Dry-on-the-vine grapes can be mechanically harvested, thus lowering labor costs. Selma Pete vines produce impressive quantities of seedless grapes that dry to form sweet, juicy raisins. Diamond Muscat is also a seedless grape. That's a major advantage over the well-known Muscat of Alexandria, which has to be mechanically deseeded, resulting in sticky, damaged raisins. The rich flavor of Diamond Muscat makes it ideal for confections such as chocolate-covered raisins or for dessert wines. Selma Pete and Diamond Muscat, first made available to growers and nurseries in 2001 and 2000, respectively, are descendants of parent vines developed in the early 1900s by USDA scientists in California and are the newest of the raisin grapes from the California laboratory. SupplementWatch NewsLetter - February 2003 This month, we're devoting the entire SupplementWatch newsletter to the conference on Dietary Supplement Use in the Elderly, that was held at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on January 14 and 15, 2003 (http://www.nih.gov/). This conference brought together some of the top researchers in the fields of nutrition, biochemistry, and gerontology to discuss important issues concerning the benefits and risks of dietary supplement use in the elderly. With government statistics showing that more than 50% of elderly currently use some form of dietary supplement, this conference was a well-needed forum. Paul Coates, Ph.D., Director of the Office of Dietary Supplements at the NIH (http://ods.od.nih.gov/) presented data showing supplement sales of $17.7 billion in 2001 - with NIH funding for dietary supplement research topping $98 million in 1999 and $117 million in 2000 (encompassing 370 research projects across 18 centers and institutes at the NIH). He also noted that dietary supplement research continues with the National Library of Medicine website providing a bibliography of over 3500 references of studies on dietary supplement use in the elderly.

Myths of Aging and Nutrition
Janice Thompson, Ph.D.
There is much mythology concerning aging in general, and the "nutrition of aging" in particular. This is compounded by the reduced physical activity of many older persons. Exercise and nutrition are inextricably linked. Dietary fat appears to correlate with body fat. Some young female athletes eat as little as two grams of fat per day-this is extremely dangerous. For most people, the basal energy expenditures equal 68% of total calorie need. Exercise does not affect the "resting metabolic rate," or RMR. Caloric need derives mostly from the amount of lean tissue a person has. Nutritional self-report are difficult and inaccurate. Memory and accuracy are problems. A 1919 equation that predicts caloric need is very adequate. It depends on weight and height and gender and age. For most inactive persons, the metabolic rate times 1.5 equals the number of calories needed. For most active persons, the metabolic rate times 2 equals the number of calories needed. "Obesity" means a person has more than 30% body fat, but many females have 37%. Growth hormones have unacceptable side effects and result is no increase in muscle strength. Mexican clinics promoting growth hormones exaggerate their results, and people may not be receiving real growth homones.
