Diagnostic Guidelines
All the following criteria should be fulfilled for a definite diagnosis: (a) the psychological or autonomic symptoms must be primarily manifestations of anxiety and not secondary to other symptoms, such as delusions or obsessional thoughts;
(b) the anxiety must be restricted to (or occur mainly in) at least two of the following situations: crowds, public places, travelling away from home, and travelling alone; and
(c) avoidance of the phobic situation must be, or have been, a prominent feature. Differential Diagnosis
It must be remembered that some agoraphobics experience little anxiety because they are consistently able to avoid their phobic situations. The presence of other symptoms such as depression, depersonalization, obsessional symptoms, and social phobias does not invalidate the diagnosis, provided that these symptoms do not dominate the clinical picture. However, if the patient was already significantly depressed when the phobic symptoms first appeared, depressive episode may be a more appropriate main diagnosis; this is more common in late-onset cases. The present or absence of panic disorder in the agoraphobic situation on a majority of occasions may be recorded by means of a fifth character to top

http://pages.infinit.net/drnayman/agorapho.htm
WHAT IS AGORAPHOBIA The term agoraphobia has been widely misunderstood. Its literal definition suggests a fear of "open spaces". However, this is an incomplete and misleading view. Agoraphobics are not necessarily afraid of open spaces. Rather, they are afraid of having panicky feelings, wherever. these fearful feelings may occur. For many, they happen at home, in houses of worship, or in crowded supermarkets, places that are certainly not "open". In fact, agoraphobia is a condition which develops when a person begins to avoid spaces or situations associated with anxiety. Typical "phobic situations" might include driving, shopping, crowded places, traveling, standing in line, being alone, meetings and social gatherings. Agoraphobia arises; from an internal anxiety condition that has become so intense that the suffering individual fears going anywhere or doing anything where these feelings of panic have repeatedly occurred before. Once the panic attacks have started, these episodes become the ongoing stress, even when other more obvious pressures have diminished. This sets up a "feedback condition" which generally leads to increased numbers of panic attacks and, for some people, an increase in the situations or events which can produce panicky feelings. Others experience fearful feelings continuously, more a feeling of overall. discomfort, rather than panic. A person may fear having anxiety attacks, "losing control", or embarrassing him/herself in such situations. Many people remain in a painful state of anxious anticipation because of these fears. Some become restricted or "housebound" while others function "normally" but with great difficulty, often attempting to hide their discomfort.

People who don't suffer from agoraphobia find it almost impossible to imagine what goes through the mind of somebody suffering from this illness. Each person's individual experience during an attack may differ, but generally speaking, an attack is very real and can be quite terrifying. I developed agoraphobia in mid 1996, after an incident changed my life completely. Before this incident, I was able to live my life to the fullest, with no restrictions. Here is my story. For the past 10 years, I have been a secretary, and have worked in many high rise buildings. Then one morning in January 1996, I was in an elevator inside my building which malfunctioned. At the time I was working on the 25th floor of my building, but this was to be a morning which would alter the rest of my life. I got into the elevator from the ground floor and pressed the button to take me to the 25th floor. Everything seemed quite normal, until the elevator continued past the 25th floor without stopping until it got to the top floor. When it reached the top, it halted and the doors remained shut. At this time, I wasn't panicked too much, and simply pressed the button for the 25th floor again and picked up the emergency telephone to report that I was stuck in the elevator.

The Heero layout I had this layout lieing around for ages. I gave up and forgot about it. I had spent some time today making a new layout, when I just realised that it sucked. So I looked around for old material and found Heero here. I always liked the close-up of his face there. I remember how much fiddling and layering went into this. Everything was taken from the Gundam Wing Manga. The little boy beside Agoraphobia is Heero, of course, and the girl to the top left is a random girl, I think. Either that, or it's Relena, but I'm not sure. The poem you can see there is an extract from Dolor by Theodore Roethke. I have no recollection as to why I picked it. It was so long ago. Yeah, so it's a pity I can't give you some wonderfully deep and purposeful reason. I'm as swallow as a puddle, I'm afraid.

20. Panic/Agoraphobia And Medication
Research on panic and agoraphobia and useful medications is new and abundant. TheAnxiety Network. Panic/agoraphobia Pages. Panic/agoraphobia and Medication.
http://www.anxietynetwork.com/pdmed.html
The Anxiety Network Panic/Agoraphobia Pages Panic/Agoraphobia and Medication Audio tapes for anxiety are now available. We cannot list complete medication information on this page, due to individual differences, possible misinterpretation, medical complications, and other related problems. A consultation with a medical professional, such as a psychiatrist who specializes in the anxiety disorders , is an important and necessary step when medication is being considered for an anxiety disorder. The following is only a guide to what we have found to be clinically useful. However, empirical research in this area has tended to support these clinical findings. In the first place, not everyone with panic needs to be on medication. There are many factors that need to enter into this judgment, such as conferring with your anxiety specialist, and the way you know your body responds to medication in general. When a person with panic and/or agoraphobia faces anxiety problems related to panic every day of their lives, we recommend that medication may be useful. Please keep in mind that while medication can be very helpful in some cases, it is NOT a cure.
