Introducing NPS
NPS is a national registered charity formed 30 years ago by a sufferer of agoraphobia for those affected by anxiety disorders. Today we are still a volunteer-led organisation, run by sufferers and ex-sufferers of anxiety disorders. Our belief is that those who have experienced anxiety disorders are best placed to provide support to other sufferers because they are able to truly understand the impact these conditions have on people's lives. We are now the largest anxiety disorders association of our type in the UK and the most well-established with many thousands of members UK wide and abroad. The National Phobic Society's links to the pages describing the help given to people with phobicias, obsessions and compulsions.
Aims and Objectives
  • Our primary aim is to promote the relief and rehabilitation of persons suffering with anxiety disorders through information and provision of self-help services.

Panic attacks and agoraphobia But because of the seriousness of a panic disorder (not just one or two attacks) and the suicide risks (even higher than depression), it is crucial that competent professional treatment be sought immediately. Unfortunately, many professionals give ineffective drugs and don't use the best therapy methods. Panic attack victims are given 50% of all angiograms, which are unnecessary and quite expensive. So seek a panic disorder specialist , if possible, by calling your Mental Health Center or the Phobia Society of America. The therapist should insure that there is no physical problem, possibly prescribe anti-depressive drugs (not minor tranquilizers), and provide psychotherapy involving relaxation, exposure to the frightening situation, and cognitive restructuring. The causes of panic attacks are not known. Some psychiatrists think the body is simply malfunctioningsending a false message that it is suffocating (being unable to breathe is terrifying); thus, these theorists see it as purely a physical problem (actually, the onset of panic disorders are often associated with major stressful life events). Other theorists believe panic sufferers were born shy, nervous children with over-demanding, suffocating parents. Later, as over-dependent, eager-to-please but resentful-of-authority young people, they frequently have an intense confrontation with an authority. Their anger leads to the first panic attack, according to this theory. More recently, three major theories about panic have evolved:

Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia by Charles H. Booras, MD
All humans have a built-in "alarm system" that goes off when they feel threatened. This alarm starts chemical, physical and emotional changes that prepare us to either flee or fight the danger that triggered the alarm ("Flight or Fight Response). In some people, this alarm may go off unexpectedly, creating a very strong sense of threat when no danger is present. This "false alarm" is called a panic attack. It occurs in a condition known as panic disorder. What is a panic attack? A panic attack is a terrifying experience. Several physical and emotional signs occur during a panic attack. The most common signs are a racing heart, shortness of breath, faintness, hot or cold flushes, trembling, tingling, weakness and nausea, or feeling as though one's self or the external world has changed somehow. In addition, people with panic attack may fear that they are dying, or going crazy or are about to lose control. Some panic attacks come on very quickly and involve many intense feelings. Other attacks may be less intense and involve fewer feelings. The signs of panic attacks can change or stay the same from one attack to another. A panic attack sounds like a heart attack. Is it?

Agoraphobia is the intense fear of situations that may be difficult or embarrassing to leave. People with this phobia worry that they will not be able to get somewhere safe. They often worry about having a panic attack or panic symptoms like dizziness, vomiting, loss of control, or difficulty breathing. Sufferers usually fear large places like malls, theaters, grocery stores, or parks. They also fear large crowds or places where they feel trapped like traveling on a plane, driving in rush hour traffic, being on a bridge, or visiting the doctor. Usually, a person with agoraphobia can articulate what they fear or where they fear it. Although, sometimes they only know that they have a sense of dread. The person will begin to avoid the situations where he or she feels uncomfortable. Agoraphobia can worsen without treatment; in some extreme cases, that person can become trapped in his or her own home because he or she is too fearful to leave. Sometimes, the person can participate in activities or travel if a trusted companion goes with him or her.

The panic attacks seem to come out of nowhere and we have tried to link them to events or triggers but there just don't seem to be any for us, which does happend to some people. A panic attack will hit you out of the blue giving you that fight or flight response. Being extremists, we do both. We fight the attack by screaming and yelling while pulling our hair and running! It feels like we are about to have a heart attack, we get chills and hot flashes at the same time and become afraid of everything. We can't breathe and our lips become numb while we get increasingly dizzy. We have more symptoms, but this is just basic information on us. You will find much more from the links below. We were lucky enough to have a very special cat named Cuddles, who was with us when we first developed panic disorder. When my then husband would fall asleep and I was still feeling my heart beating very loudly and was afraid to fall asleep, Cuddles would cuddle up to me and start purring. If I awoke during the night, afraid to death that I would have a heart attack, that cat just knew the moment I opened my eyes and would resume his purring to help us fall asleep once again. If not for that cat, we would not have survived the first few years of agoraphobia with panic disorder. Pets can be wonderful animals during these times and the disabilites act is now recognizing service dogs for people with agoraphobia and/or panic disorder.

Agoraphobia is just one type of phobia, or irrational fear. People with phobias feel dread or panic when they face certain objects, situations, or activities. People with agoraphobia frequently also experience panic attacks, but panic attacks, or panic disorder , are not a requirement for a diagnosis of agoraphobia. The defining feature of agoraphobia is anxiety about being in places from which escape might be embarrasing or difficult, or in which help might be unavailable. The person suffering from agoraphobia usually avoids the anxiety-provoking situation and may become totally housebound.
Agoraphobia is the most common type of phobia, and it is estimated to affect between 5-12% of Americans within their lifetime. Agoraphobia is twice as common in women as in men and usually strikes between the ages of 15-35. The symptoms of the panic attacks which may accompany agoraphobia vary from person to person, and may include trembling, sweating, heart

Agoraphobia Carol E. Watkins, M.D.
Agoraphobia is the fear of going out into public places. It can occur with or without panic attacks. In milder forms, agoraphobia may cause an individual to avoid certain situations and jobs. However, in some cases, the fear increases until the individual becomes depressed and housebound. Occasionally one may be too fearful to come in for treatment. This may be a reason for resurrecting the old concept of the physician’s house call. Individuals with severe agoraphobia should usually start both medication and therapy as soon as possible. Without the medication, such an individual might not be able to make full use of the therapeutic process. People with mild to moderate symptoms might chose a combination approach or therapy alone. Homework between situations, and coaching from family members or therapists help one gradually face the feared situations.

Constructing Panic
The Discourse of Agoraphobia
Lisa Capps, Elinor Ochs
Foreword Author Jerome Bruner Meg Logan has not been farther than two miles from home in six years. She has agoraphobia, a debilitating anxiety disorder that entraps its sufferers in the fear of leaving safe havens such as home. Paradoxically, while at this safe haven, agoraphobics spend much of their time ruminating over past panic experiences and imagining similar hypothetical situations. In doing so, they create a narrative that both describes their experience and locks them into it. Constructing Panic offers an unprecedented analysis of one patient's experience of agoraphobia. In this novel interdisciplinary collaboration between a clinical psychologist and a linguist, the authors probe Meg's stories for constructions of emotions, actions, and events. They illustrate how Meg uses grammar and narrative structure to create and recreate emotional experiences that maintain her agoraphobic identity. In this work Capps and Ochs propose a startling new view of agoraphobia as a communicative disorder.

The fears typically relate to venturing out in the open, of leaving the familiar setting of one’s home, or of being in a crowd, standing in line, or traveling in a car or train. Although agoraphobia usually occurs as part of panic disorder, agoraphobia without a history of panic disorder has been described.
