The primary function of the agricultural education program is the preparation of teachers of agricultural education for the public secondary schools of California. Specialized preprofessional and professional courses are offered for undergraduate and graduate (fifth year) students. Technological, scientific, and broad general education course work for agriculture teaching candidates is offered throughout the College of Agriculture and other Colleges including the School of Education and Integrative Studies.
Students with an interest in becoming agriculture teachers are advised to enroll in the agricultural science major and obtain a B.S. degree, or they may complete a B.S. degree in one of the other approved majors in the College of Agriculture. Agricultural science majors and all students who wish teacher certification are required to show competency in four areas of agriculture. This can be accomplished by completing the subject matter program in agriculture or receiving a passing score on the SSAT in Agriculture.
In addition to course work in four areas of agriculture, students who plan to teach agriculture must have two years of practical experience in agriculture and must complete an Agricultural Specialist credential. The Agricultural Specialist credential requires a minimum of 45 additional units beyond the B.S. degree. Some of the graduate work may be applied towards a Master of Science in Agriculture, Agricultural Science option.

  • Backyard Permaculture This six part course will guide you through the process of creating a thriving food ecosystem in your backyard. Among other things, you will learn about companion planting, seed saving and how to maintain healthy soil. When you complete the course you will know how to grow fresh, healthy food for you and your family. Why should I create an ecosystem in my backyard? In North America the average distance that food travels to get from where it is grown to where you eat it is 1300 miles. This means that , at best, when you bite into that apple or potato , brussel sprout or corn it is already many days old. Is it still fresh?, hardly. It also means that you and your family are reliant on a national transportation system in order for you to put supper on the table. Think of the difference in freshness and independence you achieve when you can step out your back door and pick dinner.

Easton College, with its 250-hectare farming estate, is unique among colleges in the eastern region in that it has direct involvement with most of the commonly practiced farming enterprises, including dairy cattle, pigs, poultry, sheep, root crops and cereals. Current commercial practices are adopted on the College farm so students experience realistic farming methods, mainly achieved by establishing alliances with commercial partners. Its arable unit, for example, is managed in association with Morley Research Centre and similar partnerships are being developed in other agricultural areas so Easton can demonstrate commercial-scale dairy and pig production. Where strategic partnerships are not possible, the College works closely with the farming industry to develop smaller demonstration-scale units offering high levels of technical expertise. For example, our poultry demonstration unit enables students to work with a wide range of equipment and systems, as well as gaining hands-on experience of a variety of poultry methods, including broiler production and free range turkey breeding. In addition, the College also boasts a small flock of sheep.

The discipline of Plant Pathology arose from an investigation into the cause of the disease of potatoes that precipitated the Irish Potato Famine of the 1850's. Since that time plant pathologists have worked to understand and ameliorate the threat of pathogens of plants to the food supply and to ensure food security. The discipline of plant pathology, and UW-Madison's Department of Plant Pathology, have made major contributions to the knowledge of plant biology that is essential to meet the future demands and challenges of Wisconsin and world agriculture. Agriculture must remain intensive and productive, and maintain and enhance its economical, environmental, and social appeal. Through education, research, and extension, our Department is a major contributor to the future of both the basic science of plant pathology and the application of the science toward improved agricultural production systems.
